Re: Formula Dash Panels

You guys are all tweaked about the voltage meters! I have two. I have two batteries. If the bat switch is in the both mode....then they would read the same. If it is not in the both mode, each reads its battery when the associated key is turned on.

It's not rocket science!!!

Bet it does not work that way :p :p If it did then you had only one battery selected then how is the keys powered independently? Every notice that you volt meters read the same? :D:D Anyhow it is easy to get the same thing with only one.

Re: Formula Dash Panels

Formula wired the 12V system thru a single battery switch on my 88 SR357 but they put two volt meters on the dash. This wiring gives false readings on the voltmeters when running engines in the "both" position from what I've been told. It can creat a situation wherein you won't know that an alternator is failing (or has failed) most of the time. My mechanic and I proved I had that problem and re-wired at least part of the system and I've now got two battery switches and I can look at each battery and alternaotr seperatly.

There is still a poor design in the 12V system because both battery's/alternators feed the 12v bus under the console at the same point (running lights, dash lights, aux--14 fused circuits). The circuit breaker panel under the rear seat is also wired in a similar way so that both batteries feed all 4 of the trim pumps, blowers, stereo, bilge pumps.

I'm working thru re-wiring all that so I can get to a seperate "house" battery which is impossible the way the boat was wired at factory.

The volt meter on my 382 dash reads the engine/start battery voltage. The electrical control panel in the cabin reads the house battery voltage.

Wonder why everyone seems to hav gotten away from a truely usefull guage, the amp meter!!!! They will show a problem way before you will know with a volt meter.....

Update.....just test fit the panel today before plating and painting. Making a few extra blanks with NO gauge holes. Who knows......somebody might want to get one from me!!! :drink: :drink: :drink:
