What breaks next???
Well while flushing the motors last weekend I heard this odd noise coming from the starboard motor. I sat back there and listening and kept thinking "fanbelt". It was a noise that came and went, and it wasn't coming from deep in the block. After shutting it down I muckled onto the top pulley and yanked on it and boy does it have some play. Other motor rock solid. So now I get to replace the water pump. Luckily only about $135.00 or so for an aftermarket. The "Gusman" is on the job.
I can put it in myself with no problem. I just wonder how long everybody else goes without something else screwing up?????? It's always something...... |

You gotta love it! For working stiffs like us that can't scratch a check for a new boat, this is our lot in life.

Re: What breaks next???
Just found out from Sterling I have a few Jesel rocker shafts that are cracked and need replaced.
Better to find in the engine shop than 20 miles out on the lake in the middle of a poker run, I guess. |

Joe that as true a statement as I've ever heard in my entire life. I just wish I could go two phucking weeks without getting hit out of the blue by something that costs serious coin. It's either insurance rate hikes (home, auto, and business, all of them went up), Deb's MAJOR dental issues, and now I've got bills that Blue Cross Blue Sield denied back during my kidney stone issue that says were denied because the Dr.'s offices did put a "-2" beside my policy number, something that Blue Cross Blue Shield started doing without telling us. So now I'm having to go back and fight with BCBS about this crap. Spent 3 hours on the phone yesterday between Dr.'s offices and BCBS over something that could not be easier to understand. I swear insurance companies must spend millions on trying to figure out how not to pay a legitimate claim. If I ever go postal it will unquestionably be in an insurance office. I got a letter from a "collection agency" this past Saturday stating I owe Bon Secours hospital radiology unit $ 300.00. I never received a bill from them and called the collection agency. I get this arrogant smart azz guy on the phone who calls me a liar and says I'm just stalling. Well as I start to go ballistic on this sob, he hangs up on me. I then call Bon Secours hospital and they have no record of me having any treatment on that day and are sending me that info. I can't wait to send that to that damned collection agency. There are a lot of things that beef me, but collection agencies and credit reporting agencies are at the top of my list. They have NO responsibility whatsoever to verify what they report is accurate. Anybody can tell them that anyone owes them money, and it's up to the guy getting shafted to prove it's not true. That is one system that needs a major overhaul. And it's getting worse every day. |
Re: What breaks next???
Russ, I went through the same bs when I had my stones. It seemed I got a bill from every medical place in the county, some of which I had never even heard of. I had one collection agency call, I asked them what specifically they were billing me for, x-rays, blood tests, or what. He said it was confidential and he couldn't tell me that info! I told him that he could go piss up a rope, because I damn sure wasn't paying. About a year later, a woman calls me about a medical bill. At first I didn't know what she was talking about, then I remembered. I asked her if there wasn't a note in that file mentioning something about a rope. She kind of giggled and said yes, I told her I hadn't changed my mind.
If the Blue Cross gives you too much of a runaround, call the insurance commissioner. They did that to me one time, it pissed off my doctor and he called the commish. They paid the claim in the long run. |

They have another cute trick too--if one can't collect they "sell" the account another shyster and the clock on credit report stars all over again--talk about gettingf'd without getting kissed !!! |
Re: What breaks next???
Well, since we're crying about unexpected bills, especially concerning broken boats............... Took my heads for reconditioning. Three out four are cracked across the valve seats.
Getting pricing on reconditioned replacements, $800.00 each. Ouch, not something I was planning for. |

Been down that road too. About eight years ago out of the blue some collection agency calls and says I owe fourteen thousand dollars for something I never heard of. Three weeks later I proved it wasn't my bill. Three months later I get another collection agency trying to collect the same bill. I send them all the info from the first time. Four months later I get another collection agency trying to collect this BS bill. This time I tell the guy to phuyck off and die I wasn't wasting anymore time. To date at least a dozen different collection agencies have tried this scheme and now I just laugh at them and tell them "boy did you waste your money" and hang up. It's now been about, oh maybe two years since I've heard from anyone. Now that I said it out loud I'll be getting another call probably tonight.  I finally had to threaten to sue the three Credit Reporting Agencies, along with the help of the Social Security Administration who documented my ID Theft issue, and finally got it taken off my reports. Only took almost six years.....  |

Well another plus about it is that even though you are breaking stuff and spending money out of the wallet etc, atleast you are upgrading the boat!!!! |

It's always something...... I haven't broken anything in 5 months....oh yeah , it's been winter up here :D But I guess it depends on how long it is between the time you turn the key(or keys) :( :( |

You see any blue smoke coming out of the ehaust at all???? Any excess blowby at the carb from the valve cover vent???? Any oil in the bilge????? Damn Mike that sucks..... I went a little over on my last oil change, 64 hours, and both motors were dead on the full line. Now that I opened my mouth on that subject I'm sure I'll blow one up now. |

I know one thing ..I aint payin no more 5K bills ...if it comes out this time I'll be doin it .... |

I know one thing ..I aint payin no more 5K bills ...if it comes out this time I'll be doin it .... I thought about this last night after I signed off. If it's leaking out, it'll be in the bilge. If it's burning, it'll show up in blue smoke in exhaust, might show up on the plugs. If you have pressure getting into the motor from a cylinder firing (i.e. bad rings etc.) you will have blowby either at the valve cover vent or worse, coming out the dipstick. I had one motor that had a hole in a piston and blew four quarts of oil all over the engine in about 20 minutes (this was on my 242/twin small blocks). Maybe go talk to the mechanic that worked on it and pick his brains. He should be willing to back up his work. Good luck. I really hope it's nothing serious. Might try seeing if you can find any evidence (any kind of residue) in the port side tips if you can get your hand up inside the box to check this. It would have to be burning oil pretty badly to have it show up in that manner and I don't think one quart in six hours qualifies. I have heard of motors that for whatever reason just use oil, more than you would think normal and ran fine for years. Russ |
Re: What breaks next???
I did pull the plugs about 6-8 weeks ago ..looked ok to me ...I installed new ones and will check them soon ..I also did Compression Test ..they were all about 168lbs ..I have a thread on Tech Forum and someone said if its an oil ring it wont show under compression test ... There is an oil Cooler under the motor but not sure if its for the non-used PS pump ...My mechanic said he didn't think our 454's have oil coolers .. It does push the dipstick out ....Also someone sujested the PCV Valve ...need to check that .
This is the first motor we pulled from getting hot ... we never found anything wrong ...this motor had about 25 hours on it then ....I did have heads redone and we put it all back together and its ran fine cept for hole in oil pan  We are doing the roof on the boathouse now ...I cant concentrate on more than one thing at a time .... Guess thats why I never got that threesome ... :D .... but we'll get there ....keep ya posted .. :drink: |
Re: What breaks next???
Break
Out Another Thousand I know I've just jinxed myself... |
Re: What breaks next???
OTF, if it's not leaking it, and not burning it, my bet would be it's going out in the exhaust water some way or another. I'd say piss on it and add a quart every seven hours myself. :p
|
Re: What breaks next???
If it's pushing the dipstick out, you've got "compression pressure" getting down into the block/oil pan, etc. at least that's what I think.
|
Re: What breaks next???
Here's another thought , last summer I would empty my p.s . pump in 15 miles  . Also noticed milky exhaust water on drivers side. Turned out to be a bad PS cooler and I was pumping fluid into the cooling sys. and out the exhaust.
If no smoke , no blow by and no leaks in the bilge the oil pressure is much greater than the water pressure so the oil will go to the water sys and out the exhaust with no smoke(because it's not burning) . |

on another Note ... Dont laugh guys ...but would it not be great if that center Stringer was not so high ?? I get so pissed trying to work around the dang thing ....might take my Sawzall to it !!!!! If you look at other boats ...even the new FastTec hull ....its way lower .... |
Re: What breaks next???
Joe ...mine is simular but doesn't attach to bell housing ....just some brackets under the motor ....

I agree with others here, check out what you have NOT rebuilt. You should have confidence that your motors are sound since they just got rebuilt. This is troubleshooting 101. Check what is either different or not rebuilt. I'm pretty sure you didn't do much to the oil coolers during the rebuild  Just don't go ripping into those engines yet, I'm sure it's something much less complicated. It's probably simple. |
Re: What breaks next???
Okay, but what's causing that dipstick to "blow out"?? Only one thing I can think of and that's pressure. Nothing else I can come up with would explain that. I think you really need to find out why that is happening at least that's my two cents.
Went through this myself. I didn't pay attention to it and the third time out I blew four quarts of oil all over my motor. |

So the answer to "what breaks next???"
your wallet! :( |
