Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Well its already happening my "3ft. Idis" is itiching again after the holiday. Would a jump to a 32 be just adding a second engine maintenance? and not much if any gain on the ride.
Or should I just wait until the next tax bracket jump and hold off until I can afford a 35'. I have a 525SC in my 29 so unless I find one with big motors I would probably lose speed right??? Thanks, guys. BTW. If there is anyone at LOTO with a 32 or 35 I would love to hitch a ride to compare. |

Go for the 35. Much nicer boat over 32.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
We were/are facing the same decision. We have a 2000 29 with 500efi. 32's cockpit is actually smaller than the one in the 29. 32 and 27 have the same cockpit size. The 29 single is the "extended cockpit" and having moved from a 27 to the 29, it is definitely noticable. Even the swim platform on the 29 is bigger (for those of us who have somewhat "larger" backsides" , as compared to the 21 yr old centerfold models). The additional length on a 32 is in the motor compartment and in the form of a longer bench seat in the cuddy. Same cooler and sink as in the 29, from what I could see, other than they moved the location for the switches. We are going to just wait and get a 35 Lightning, 353 Fastech or 38 Fever. The insurance on the 38 is actually cheaper than the 35 with 500's because of the way they determine who and how much the insurance will cost. Progressive will insure a 38 with 500's or a 353 with 500's for about $1200/year, but they won't touch a 35 with 500's. 425hp is the highest they would go for a 35 lightning. You would have to get insurance thru one of the HP insurance places, and the best deal we could find was just over $3000 per year, with a ridiculous deductible.

I have a 2001 32 that I will sell. Right now it has 572's in it but am considering putting in the 509's EFI's I have in order to sell it. It has IMCO lowers on it and runs around 104 with eyepoping acceleration. 95,000 on double axel Myco trailer. Call me at 336 214 6900 Roger

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
About the best advice that I can give is ride in all of your possible choices before you choose one.
I think if you do you will wind up in a 35 or 38 - both are great boats. |

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
My wife and I opted for the 35' instead of the 29'. The boat handled the water at Grand Lake much better. You are right on the insurance...full coverage is a little over 6K for the year. I think alot of it has to do with the SC 525s and our age.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
I think my 38 with 525 efi's is costing us around $1600 a year. Our 35 with 500's was $1400.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Our 2003 35 with 575s is running us around 3500 a year DAM.......but we were told that it was our age and horsepower. Does this sound right?

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
A 35 with 502's is easy to insure under $1000. 496HO's is easy to insure, too. But if you tell them you have 500s' or bigger, you need to go thru one of the companies that use Markel (sp?). You can only get a quote from one of the brokers because Markel then locks you out by name or address for 90 days so no other broker can quote you - that kinda sucks! If we took a $10,000 deductible, we could get insurance for 6 months with a 6 month layup, inland lakes only, for $1700 on a 35 with 500's valued at $110K. 502's or 496's was OK with Progressive and a $250 or ($500 - dont remember anymore) deductible for same valued boat, same terms and coverage was right at $1000. Having an insurance payment that is as much as a car payment, with nothing to show for it and only get 6 months use from the boat, didn't make alot of sense to me, but nothing to do with HP boats makes much sense, anyways. We decided to wait and just get a 353 Fastech with 500s' or a 38 Fountian with 500s' - progressive would take either of those for right at $1000 per year and reasonable deductible, although I'm not planning on using the deductible. :D I've had some of the best try to "slide" me in with one of the non HP carriers, but they seem to be getting wise to this effort - or , I have heard that they won't pay if you do have a loss.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Progressive caps their policies at 75 mph for "performance boats". I think it was 85- 90mph for bass boats - figure that one out  Progressive also has a formula to determine the max hp that they will cover for a given boat model ie, twin 425hp for a 35 Lightning, but twin 470 hp for a 353 Formula and twin 470hp for a 38 Fountain. That has helped us determine what the "next boat" will be. State Farm nearly choked when I asked about a 35 Lightning. Nationwide would take a HP boat, but they underwrote the policy thru Progressive, so Progressive's rules applied. I'm done, now. :drink:

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
What are some recommended insurance companies used by everyone? I think the things that are killing us on insurance price is that our boat is an 06, we are 26 years old, and we have supercharged 525s. If anyone has a recommendation on a better price I welcome the suggestions.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Raise your deductible and lower your declared value - and then hope that you never need to use it (seriously). I don't think you are going to find anyone other than someone like Total Dollar (Sy Goldberg) or Midwest Performance (Greg ???) that will be able to write a legitimate policy. Sy gave us the best quote. Just my opinion, though.

do yourself a favor... call total dollar

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Wow, this thread really went on a tangent, but a very relevant issue. My wife and I almost bought a 32 with 502s' but once we looked at what the differences were from our 27, we decided to skip the 32 and go directly to a 35 or 38 foot boat. Storage becomes a whole new issue with a 38, though. A lot of storage units at Cumberland could handle a 35 on the "right" trailer (read:short tongue), but very few could handle the overall length of a 38. Also, from what I saw, you could get a 38 for the same, or just a little more, than a 35. Price diffence wasn't that much considering the amount of $$ you are already paying.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
Went from a 27' to a 38' over the winter. I tested both (w/ HP 500's) and liked the additional cabin space of the 38' since my gfriend and I stay weekends on the boat. The 35' was better on the top end, but seemed a little less "connected" to the water at top speed. Both are great boats; don't think you can make a bad decision. Definitely would suggest you drive both (preferably back to back) before buying. FYI my insurance with Progressive is $1,300 per year on the 38' with HP 500's. I'm 33 and single so just about anyone should be able to beat that rate.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
I went from a 29 with twins to a 35 both have blower motors and love them both , but the 35 is a much easyer boat to drive. A friend just bought a 42 and that is one big boat. you will have fun with what ever you pick.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
I have a 97 35 for sale, with 500 hps 164 fresh water hours, extras, very meticulous, and clean. I had a 35, 27, 32 and now back to the 35. I will figure out how to post pictures and put up a few.

Re: Upgrade from a 29' to a 32' or 35'???
I am 27 and was insuring a 2002 42' fountain with 575's up until I sold it this year. Had the boat for 3 years, no tickets, no claims on any of my boats and insurance went up $700 to a total of $6700 for a season. I called sy and reduced the value covered and up'd the deductible which brought it to $6000. Insurance was part of the reason I bought a 29'.
