29' - wicked bad chine walk
#1
I have a 2001 29 ft Fountain with a 575SCi and when i reach the mid 70's, it sometimes does this rock and roll that is so bad that i have to back out of the throttle - like right now !!!
It feels as if it did it one more time (like the 4th time) it would throw me right out of the boat ......
So, ........ does anyone else experience this same deal, and if so, did anyone have the nads to let it go and see what it would do ???
Now, before everyone jumps all over me to say "use your tabs" -- i know that fixes the problem, but as you all know too, that scrubs off speed during those radar runs --
plus, i want to know if it is just my boat or not --
PS - i tried a LH B1 prop verses my RH -- no help there.

is there a similarity in water conditions when this happens???......Ive heard of some boats (not beaks) that only chine walk in dead calm water.......otherwise doesnt happen.......
Is this a new thing???

no -- this is not a new thing --
it does not happen on flat unless i quarter into some other boat waves
it does not happen going on top of rough stuff (say 1 footers)
it happens when it is rough during poker runs though, while getting tossed around from all angles (have to run tabs then or else)
in other words -- if i am cruzing say 75 and i hit something that rocks the boat a little, then that starts the chine walk and it amplifies it really (REALLY) quick and bad
i have powered thru while steering hard one way then the other, but i never do that with someone on-board

i know you don't want to hear this ...............but i owned a 29, lets just say its giving you a warning to put your tabs down a little. the few mph gain isn't worth your safety. my girlfriend also has a nice scare on her knee from my 29 getting out of control. just becarefull when topping out a single engine 29. that is what i needed to hear - seriously --
i was thinking about gathering up the nerve to let it go -- to see what it was going to do -- but i think i got the picture now
i have been working on dialing in the sweet spot on the tabs so that they are just touching to help stop 90 % of the events -
i will defintely keep pulling back on the throttle -
- thanks

lay a straight edge off the bottom of your boat....put the tabs down to parallel the straight edge.....thats neutral......mark that position on your indicators......then you'll always know if your dragging tab or not........neutral is not nessisarilly halfway up the indicator as I found out after a year of running the boat.........doug

I have an 05 29 with the 575 and roughly the same stuff happens to me. This weekend out we ran 80 in all types of condiotions that were pretty ideal. But yes it does the same to me at the poker runs at about 75+. One time it did it so my bad I almost dropped to my knees and started praying. It really only does it to me part of the time. Like I was told you have to work the boat up to that high of speeds and find the boats groove, you just cant throw the throttle forward and get your top speed. Some chine walkin is worst than others. I think it has a lot to do with those cross waves which you cant blame all on the boat. Because it is totall fine at those speeds going with the waves, instead of the waves going sideways against the boat.

birdog -- no stops on tabs - they drop down enough to stuff the beak
p-m-t --- the neutral position as you described is at 2-1/2 on my tab indicator and that is where i was running at 57 mph with no speed loss -- i am assuming that when i test at 75 mph, it can be a little more before speed starts dropping because the water is coming back up further back behind the boat -- i am going to test for that spot --
tnothin ---- you describe the same deal -- so i guess it is enherent with the beast, and not just my boat

I have a 27 w/500efi and it chine walks at 71-74mph sometimes. If you can catch it right off you can correct it through steering, if not just back off a little and work back up I find that to be a faster soultion than dropping the tabs. I strongly suggest NEVER LETTING IT GO, it is very possible it could catch and hook, thus throwing you and everyone, and that would be bad
