Re: New Dash

was it harder than you thought or easier than you thought.......?????

that is something Id like to do in the future.......new dash and gauges......Ive heard a bunch of different ways of doing it from taking a gauge out and reconnecting it under the dash then disconnecting it again and installing it in the new dash to ripping them all out and using a schematic to put it back to gether..........what was your process?????

PMT...
Did Mine last year And it is a Undertaking the first time around.. The best way is pull the dash tag the few things that have to stay with the boat safty sw/ ign sw ect.... and do it on a bench with no distractions.. Should go fine the main dash has Quick disconects on the main harness

Re: New Dash

It wasen't as bad as I originally thought it would be. I just got up under the dash with a roll of masking tape and a sharpie and marked each wire. Almost all of the gauges have the same wiring. Ground (G), ignition hot(i), sending unit (s) then you have Illumenation (if you are going with Gaffrig guages) they have a hot and a ground. Fountain just uses a single wire (hot) and grounds through the alum dash. I just ran a jumper wire from the ground post up to the light (-). It looks like a mess under there its not too bad. Take all of the tabs/ trim switch screws out of the dash and don't unhook the wires, I did the same with all of the toggle switches on the dash just left them all hooked up. You do have to cut the wires to the little switch indicators (red lights) next to the switches, they will not fit through the holes. All in all it really wasen't that bad. I also go a chance undo some things the previous owner did half assed under there. If you have everthing there. I bought the dash panel and mounted all of the guages and bezels on my couch ( I also kept the guages in the same arrangment they were on the old panel) that way the wire lengths are the same. I did have to drill some new holes on one side the white dash panel didn't exactally line up. :evilb:

I had my body shop painter ( I work at a chevy dealership) paint my factory throttle/ shifter. And the dash panel and guages/ sending units/ steering wheel and advice came from Don Bracca, [email protected] or his web site ishttp://www.tpmarine.com/index.asp

Re: New Dash

I got the whole setup through mailto:[email protected] White dash, guages, steering wheel. He will hook you up. Anything different no not really if I had the extra scratch I woulf have gone Gaffrig on the throttle, instead of painting the original. Brian

Re: New Dash

This is something i plan on doing to my '91 27' Fever this winter. Was planning on pulling the dash and doing it on a bench in the basement. Thinking Gaffrig or Livorsi gauges, white dash instead of black, all white rocker switches with white covers instead of black for the other switches. I also want to have a couple of extra holes added, for the depthsounder and for a switch for the silent choice. I want the silent choice switch to look like all the other switches and i want to add an indicator light for it.

How much did that run, if you don't mind me asking?

sleeper_dave 09-21-2005 04:57 PM

Re: New Dash

I can do the wiring myself, that should make a good winter project. Plus i can save $275. I may just call you for that dash panel, though. Would i be able to have an extra switch hole included in the dash, with a spot for an indicator light, preferably labeled "exhaust"?

Re: New Dash

The white dash panel was I think $399 and each gaffrig guage was about $60, bezels $10, steering wheel $90 about $1000 in all

Give Outdrive Exchange a call they sold me all my Gaffrig gauges dirt, dirt cheap!!!! I'd have to dig up the receipt but the smaller gauges were about 32 dollars a piece not sure about the speedo or tack at the moment but it was cheaper then anybody else I called.... Give them a call, there new and trying to get there name out there offering great deals to get themselves on the map. 623-693-0470 talk to Jim, he should be able to help you out.

Re: New Dash

I just ordered all the gauges and the panel to do this on my boat, and i have a couple of questions.

What's the light on the right of the big gauges for? What did you put in the hole on the left side of the big gauges? And what is that above the ignition switch, below the halon indicator? My boat doesn't have any of that, and i don't want to have any empty holes in my dash.

Thanks

Re: New Dash

The red light is a secondary warning lite Fountain ads to the dashes now. Lites up if you loose oil press, over heat, or low drive oil.... along with the Merc warning buzzer.

The black rubber boot is a for the ignition push button breaker.

sleeper_dave 01-19-2006 04:13 PM

Re: New Dash

Cool, i can come up with a breaker. I've been meaning to get that warning system working again anyway, so i can hook up a light for that in one of the holes. What's the other one for? The dash i got has a hole on each side of the large gauges at the top.

Both Holes on the sides of the speedo & tach are idiot lites for the computer warning systems. Not sure how old you boat is but maybe just throw some lites in and hook them up for low oil pressure or high temp warnings (you'll have to add senders for theses lites but good insurance). The Hole between the ignition and halon system I think is a manuel override for the halon system. I crawled under my dash one time to see and its hooked to the system, but obviously don't want to test it by pushing the button... :D

Re: New Dash

The light on either side of the big gauges are warning lights that I had to tie into the buzzer wires, they come on when you first turn the key on, (mine didn't have them either) there is one on each side of the big guages. I got them from the guage guy don bracca. The button on top of the ignition switch is the circut breaker for the ignition switch. You could always just get the lights to fill up the holes even if you don't hook them up. These guage guys almost always have plugs to fill empty holes, they look ok if you paint them white. Let me know if I can help. brian

Home Depot and Lowes in my area keep these plugs in both black and white in many sizes. I keep a good selection on hand for various purposes around the shop.

Re: New Dash

Mine's gonna be all white.

The red looks nice, but i really like the clean, all white look. If i ever have to do any paint work, my boat will be all white, no graphics, nothing. I just love that look.

I see bezel for the single engine shifter is way over sized too!
I bought one for my twin setup, same way. 1/8" space all around, plus it does not have the same profile as the gauge bezels. So I made one to fit CORRECTLY and with same profile. Will be powdercoated to match. Anyone interested in a new purple bezel? twin engine

Todd,
My throttle assembly is being plated right now. Should be done 1st of next week. Then they, along with the shifter bezel and one for my dash cig lighter plug will be heading your way soon.
