shorties on a single step
Have any of you guys run shorties on a single step ? and have any pros and or cons. I am looking to switch from bravos to XRs with shorties.

Re: shorties on a single step
I had a 29 w/ a 525SC that I installed an Imco upper and -2 lower on - loved the way it handled - it tends to carry the bow level, no matter what the trim setting was. If you go with a shorty, you'll need a prop with bow lift and keep the bow light (i.e. keep the cooler towards the center/stern  ). Also - you will not need to trim the motors as much - I never went past 4 - 4.5 on the trim. The shortie solved my planing problem and allowed me to step up to a larger prop.

Re: shorties on a single step
My boat seams to be a little slow , I have been told it is due to having ext boxes and a stock drive . ext boxes tend to put the drives deeper in the water. I will have to pull the inspection cover and see where the heights are set. then buy a - height drive.

Re: shorties on a single step
I know for a fact the newer 2001 & up 35 X are aprox. 2 inches higher than my '99 35 Classic - this is why you're seeing 496ho boats run upper 70's - let me know how you make out.

Re: shorties on a single step
I will keep you posted , I will call fountain today and see what the x demenison should be and go from there , I am working a deal to get new ones and trading my bravo's.

Re: shorties on a single step
There has to be someone out there that has tried shorties on a '97 - 99 35 Single Step, that could share their results, I can not justify the cost without knowing for sure I'm going to have positive results.

Re: shorties on a single step
That is kind of what I thought. I get tired of being the one to buy and test and sell for half price when I fine I waisted my money. I buy props and as soon a some one knows I have them they want to try them. I snowmobile also and everyone wants to use my helix and springs and weights at my expense. Don"t get me wrong I like to help out But where is the guys that can help me out.??

Re: shorties on a single step
Well I got the boat on the trailer tonight and pulled the inspection cover on the ext box and sound that the box is mounted in the lowest hole bottom. I think this means the drive is higher, Can I go higher with a shorter drive or will I have problems getting on plane. The boat comes out like a jet ski now.
|
Re: shorties on a single step
If you can get on plane good now (like a jetski), you will probably lose some but still be respectable..

Re: shorties on a single step
Candyman, You must be saying that fountain raised the motor first ,then used the top hole in the stellings box. Yes mine are stellings. But if I put mine in the top hole that will put the drive lower in the water. It will lower the ext box. The bolts are in the bottom hole now and I can not trim the drive with out them hitting the swimplatform. and with the drives against the platform at 5200 there is no rooster at all. I think this is slowing the boat .??????????????

Re: shorties on a single step
I checked the drive height tonight, they are 4inches from the bottom of the boat to the center of the prop shaft. Does anyone know what this should be with boxes?

Re: shorties on a single step
I will be posting before & after results on my 35 going from stock bravo drive to -2 sportmaster lowers - going to run same props (28b1s) & borrow a set of 30's - hopefully pick up some MPH

Re: shorties on a single step
If we get the rain that is due , you will not be able to test. I hope they work out for you.

Re: shorties on a single step
they are bolted on & ready to go - just waiting for the weather to co-operate

well - I finally got to test to -2 inch lowers - had gusty winds the entire weekend - managed to get 85 in moderate to rough conditions - I'm pretty sure there another 1 - 2 in better conditions as I had to pull back the sticks several times due to being launched out of the water. Needless to say I was impressed - 4 MPH faster than my last outing - going to go out & try again in calmer conditions. Bottom line.... they work :D

That being said Ran-Dom 32's results are the same without the boxes. If he likes the way the boat handles with the shorties it may be the way to go. Dan |
Re: shorties on a single step
Thanks candyman , I can see where the motor in my 35 had the motor raised at one time .the motor mounts have two extra holes. Ram Don 35, what was the x-demension with the shorties? I would like to here you say two inches ,that would put me in the ball park.

Re: shorties on a single step
Prop shaft location is aprox. 2 inches or less below the running surface - coming on plane was OK - -no problem if you drop tabs in the water -(it was pretty rough conditions) I sure it won't be a problem in calmer water- on a side note - I previous was running 28 labbed B1 @ 5200 (81-82) I had 30 Labbed B1 when I tried the shorties. & the RPM was pretty much the same 5200 - (84-85) like I said I will try again in calmer water & should net better results. -& I will be able to comment on handling issues

Re: shorties on a single step
well I tried her again today in calmer conditions & squeezed out another MPH - boat felt pretty stable - GPS spiked to 88 for a second  but dropped to 85 - 86 I did notice my RPM was 5300 - 5400 right @ the rev limiter with 30 pitch labbed B1's - anyways I am definitely going to save up for a set in the spring. Pretty good way to end the season

mv 35 - just curious - did you find a better set up?

Re: shorties on a single step
R.L. Stay away from the maximus's. P5x or herrings work great.
