Need help with exhaust...........

2 Attachment(s)
I currently have a pair of CMI Big tube straight backs."8 years old".......Its time to replace them....CMI will not make me new ones. To many problems with water reversion. What options are out their without being Dry? and won't break my pocket book. Do I have options other than changing the current transom? Thanks, Tom

Tom, I would go back to the old way and re-glass the swim platform and run the pipes back under the swim platform.

You'll be happy and so will your ears! Let me know if you need anything. :drink:

If you have enough room between the top of the inner transom plate and the bottom of the swim step we might be able to modify the tails to exit much lower, and improve the downward angle of the tail. Another option might be to turn out the front engine tails and or headers (what we call bat wing style) similar to the current large engine Fountain factory headers.

now I am on the right track............Heath @ Trick Marine said I could not get those headers duplicated. After seeing the pictures what are your thoughts?

my priority

1) don't break my pocket book

2) I don't want a dry appliction

3) If possible don't change the transome

With that being said, I beleive my current issues with water revesion, have been from the age of my current headers. Thats what you guys told me in July 05. That the water was comming from the welds at high temp. They are 8 years old, that makes sense to me. Thanks, for the help....Tom

jrz, I think his problem isn't with reversion as much as water ingestion.

The header system he has dumps the water at the end of the pipes, above the swim platform. Since the a$$ end of fountains are so low, water easily washes up over the back of the platform and into the exhaust pipes.

Also, over time I guess the headers have cracked and water has gotten into the motor while it has been running.

The boat originally had Gil Offshore exhaust and it exited under the swim platform and out thru the side of the swim platform.

You could run the bat wing style and the two aft motors under the platform and there shouldn't be any reversion problems because the fountain swim platform acts as a cap and won't let the water flow back up into the pipes when the platform goes underwater.

I hope that made sense...

Tom, After looking at the pictures of your boat I do not think they will work without tailpipe work. Roger

Re: Need help with exhaust...........

The headers you have could be duplicated, but by exiting under the swim deck it would help the reversion problem by creating much more drop, and you would have to plug the existing holes.

What would you recommend if, I go under my swim platform?

Tom... I also have stellings with straight tails exiting over the rub rail. To eliminate the reversion problem, I've welded about a 6" piece of 3/4" stainless tubing that I got from stelling, to my existing stingers.
They stick out past the mufflers about 2"s. To do this, I had to take off the baffle plate in the muffler, and mill a horseshoe lookin U shaped slot into the top of the plate so the stinger can stick through when the muffler is in the closed position.

When the boat is sitting still and a wave hits the back of the boat, as long as the mufflers are closed, barely any water will get past the baffles, as long as you don't mill that opening at the top way too big.

If you need some more advice on how this was done, call me at home tonight, 708-579-5434, or on the cell during the day 708-870-2572..........Frank

I'm gonna see if I have any pics of this up close, not sure till I check.

Yes, I would exit under the swim platform. The best way to do this is to bring the boat to CMI and have the headers and tails made to exit through the original holes.

Will you drill the holes? Would you prefer the motors in or out?
