42 Fountain bottoms ?
What years did they change the bottom on a 42 from 2000 to 2004?
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Not sure but 2005 was a new bottom.
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
They went from the twin small steps to the larger steps around 2000. I believe the Fever still had the small steps and the Lightning had the new larger ones. Then there was a small change around 2003-04 and then again in 05.

Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Blume what did they use to call the 42 EX then? They had 2 different decks at one point. The 42 EX deck had the smaller steps then they discontinued that deck and bottom a year or so after they brought out the current Lightning deck and that hull had bigger steps. This was around 1999-2000.
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Blume, in 1999 they built both decks but the new deck had the new larger steps for the bottom. There were a few of these boats -1999 models- at the Fountain dealer when I bought my 2000 29 Fever in Oct of 1999. I'll have to go look through some old Fountain catalogs I have. Confusing huh? :D

Not to confuse the issue, but they had 2 different large step bottoms in 99 and forward, but with different angles of attack. One was for small power bravo boat and the other was for large power #6 boats. But there were mistakes, I ended up with 900SC's and #6's on a boat with the more aggresive bravo bottom. Ran great, but could be unstable in very smooth water at high speeds. Then they also made a third large step bottom that was actually only notches, no step, also around 2001.I think this one was a very limited production and was used mostly for race boats. However Jeaston from the board here ended up with one of these.Sooooooooooooooooooo, that makes 3 possible bottoms. |
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Jeez, I thought you only knew stuff about boats built "hypothetically".... :D

So what one would be better with 850hp per side? and what speeds would you see full cabin? Thanks Rob :drink: |
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
I too have heard about the 2 different large step 42 bottoms for different power but no one I know with Fountain will confirm that and say that is not so. I do know for sure the 42 Cigarette Tiger Twin step has 2 different bottoms depending on power.. and that is published with Cig...the Fountain 42 bottoms are a rumor from my understanding...although if someone from Fountain can confirm this please correct me. I do know since the large step 42 bottom came out there have been a few revisions to it due to racing and Reggies on going R&D.

Thanks Rob :drink: You can tell the difference in the hulls by how far the stakes come up on the front of the boat. The Number 6 boats the stakes come all the way to the V at the front. The bravo boats, the strakes only go straight forward and stop several ft. short of the front. This straight from Jeff Harris at fountain 4 yrs ago. |

It ran 106 on GPS, but that was with the drives filled with the heavy wet sump lube. Mistakenly done by the dealer I bought it from and not discovered until right before I traded it. Fountain said they usually saw a 3-7 mph increase with a wet sump. So maybe 109-110 with correct oil in drive.

I would of thouht it would be faster with that much power . Maybe the newer step bottom is faster? Isnt Jeff working with/for team CRC? Rob :D |

Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the website fresh over from TeamBajaMarine, a 33 Outlaw I still own! But I'm thinking about getting into a 2005 42 Ex 525's staggered. What kind of a wave crusher, if at all is this boat, or is it only a "go fast 38 footer" as all my friends are telling me. The 33 Baja has a good rough water ride. We are in Houston, Gulf of Mexico. |
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
The 42 fountain has a very good ride. One of the best ive ever been on. Speeds should be around 83-84mph consistantly.
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Is this boat really a "38 footer" as many are saying?
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
I bought my 2005 42 new and love the boat. Had a 35 for 8 yrs prior.
You won't crush waves, but rather skip over them. The faster you go the better it will ride which takes some getting used to. Test ride one first and you will answer your own question. Happy shopping :drink: |

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...air-A-Dice.jpg Race boat with full cabin?? So how much faster would the newer bottom with same power be over the 117????????? Rob :drink: |
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Pair A Dice was a 42 Lightning full pleasure version with no light lay-up. A 3rd bolster could be popped in front for the 3rd man when needed.

Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
I will get a pick of mine...there may be a difference.

Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
The 42 Ex and 42 Lightning have different bottoms.
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
I think they are the same in 2005.
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
looks like it
|
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
TODAY Fountain Cust Svc told me that they bottoms were the same in '05 forward. The performance should be identical. SO WHY are there so many more Lightning than Ex out there when Lightning is so much more expensive?

I can see the negatives for a big boy in a Fountain. |
Re: 42 Fountain bottoms ?
Lightnings have more headroom and you can get TV, A/C, Genset, all the stuff that breaks unless you run with Petunia's on the table and a washer dryer :evilb:
