I had the same question before I bought mine. In 2005, the bottoms were identical. In years prior, they were SOMETIMES different, best told by different size steps, the depth of which can be measured. The "large step" and "small step" bottoms. The larger front step was 2 1/2 ", and the smaller front step was 2 1/4 " I believe, correct me if I'm wrong. Every time I ask them this question(Fountain) I get a different answer. Call Customer Service until you get Martin Sanborn, he's the only one who knows. They do have a file with all the right answers, I just don't think all the customer service people have access to it.

The deck and room in the boat and layout are the real main differences. The lightning is also staggerd engines.

I looked at both and the main difference in the 2005 is the deck and wind fairing instead of windshield. Supposedly they are the same otherwise. I like the old school looks of the Ex and the walk around deck on the outside edge. The cabin seems to be a little lower in headroom. The Ex is a little lighter in total weight.
