Steering wheel question
 

Is there anything special I need to know about replacing the factory "Dune Buggy" steering wheel? 5 or 6 bolts? What about the hydraulics? I'm tired of looking at the ugly thing!

Before you buy a new wheel, look at the Keith Eckert's, I saw them at the Boat show, they have them in purple, blue, yellow. I think they looked the best. Iodized wheel w/ palm grips. I talked to Bret May 386-446-0660 at KE. I will plan on getting a purple one for me, I am going to ask for it on my B-Day.:p

I love the dune buggy wheel. Put one on every boat I've owned. Not having to change it on my Fountian was just a bonus!

My 27 actully had a Momo and I switched it to a Dino when I went full hydraulic. At least the DB wheel is never out of killter like most other wheels and hydraulic steering. The Momo was much nicer, leather grip but I didn't like the black spokes.

dont forget that hydraulic steering never returns to the same position twice. i mention this for those that are looking at wheels with special grips.

Hydraulic steering doesn't return to the same place? Would that mean you can't get the contoured wheels? eg: the palm grips on the side? I like the look of those. I still don't know if I need a certain type of wheel to go with the hydraulics. I'm not buying a $200 steering wheel! Can you get the Fountain wheel in different colors? Anyone know the cost?

I just bought a Momo from Livorsi at the Miami show. The solid color one. Without the grips. I was told the same thing about Hydraulic steering. Not that I have it on my boat...yet. the wheel is shiny like the bezels. Looks real sweet. I got the matching hub to go with it.

How many clams did you have to give for the deal?

Does the wheel have the trim buttons on it?...hope not.
If you want to sell i will give you a good buck for it.
This is the one i have, and don't like it...i want the "buggy" wheel !!!:D

Has anyone seen the new colored Gaffrig ones?
My wheel was originally white but has turned as yellow as the dash. In 97 Fountain painted the dash instead of powder coating it. It only took 5 hours to put the bezels on. I can't wait to see how long the entire dash will take.

I just noticed your cabin doors. Did you put the vinyl over the black door or was it painted? There have been a lot of questions about that lately. You should post the pictures form the summer about your graphics upgrade.

Yep..that was "glossy white" vinyl that i used to cover the cabin doors, deck hatches, and storage doors.
Cheaper than having them made or ordering the white ones from Fountain$

I like how you put the white vynal on your boat, could you post some pics of the windscreen? Also how did you cover up the screws? or just paint them white?

Not only does the steering never return to the same spot but have you noticed that while you are traveling straight that you are constantly turning the wheel to stay straight? I talked with Latham about this and they said it was normal. The new "Fly-by-wire" system they have does not do this and always stays the same. I'll be sticking to the DB wheel too.:(

I HAVE NOT NOTICED THE CONSTANT MOVEMENT OF WHEEL TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT. USUALLY WERE EVER YOU POINT IT THAT IS THE PATH IT TAKES. PERHAPS I MISS UNDERSTOOD YOUR COMMENT

I hope it's not just me but yes, when setting a straight-line course the boat will tend to turn slightly. I've noticed that I always have to move my hand back to the top of the wheel even when trying to just go straight. Without any adjustments the boat will drift off course. Anybody else notice this or do I have a problem of some sort? It's not from wind or current.

i diffently do not have that problem with my hydraulic steering. that is one of the great things about hydraulic is it doesnt allow the drives to stray. you could literially take your hands off the wheel and maybe even go to the back seat to enjoy the ride and it doesnt move. unless you catch a wave wrong and it pitches the bow in another direction then it's off in that direction. but im not constantly having to move my hands up on the wheel. i see from another post that you have a 47 those are awsome boats, that thing should drive itself perhaps its because of the triples although i wouldnt think so. maybe you have a valve bleeding down pressure which is allowing it to drift. allowing one ram or another to move. i think if it were me id be complaining to my dealer.
