Sno Bol toilet bowl cleaner will remove the deposits too. Squirt it on and watch it disolve the white, then rinse. No scrubbing. I've used it to wash the sides of my boat when it got a little calcium build up over time. Smooth as a babies behind afterwards. Then wax.

Best I've found is Simple Green and a soft brush. My boat gets washed every time it goes back on the lift and the soot just builds up over summer. Same problem on my 32 w/ 502's, and also previous 27' with a blower motor.

+ 1 on the Simple Green. the soot on the transom of my boat seems to be greater when it is cooler out and not so bad when the weather is hot.
