New Fountain owner, what speeds should I expect?
Just traded my cat for a 1990 29ft fountain with twin 454 mags with bravo 1 drives and 25p 3 blade props. Just curious of what other guys are seeing? I'm thinking of pulling the mags and going a little bigger and better looking motors.(painted, etc) Heres a few pics!

Looks nice, I like the all white look! As for the speed, I would guess 75ish. If you contact the factory they can send you a copy of the original performance report. This will tell you what the tabs and drives were set at and what prop was used to get the best performance out of the boat.

I just sold the exact same set up in May, just different colors.
76 mph all day long! Its hard to find a more dependable set up, those Mags will run forever! |
the mags were just redone in april of 09, guy says they only have around 12 hrs of run time. If it runs 75ish thats good enough for me, I just traded my cat that had a brand new $20k Bullet engine with all billet accessories etc, then go to a stock 454 mag they just dont look the same. LOL

Why did you sell the thunder cat? Was that the one you were redoing and had a thread in the paint section?
How did it end up looking. |

yes i traded the thundercat for this 29. i finished it, pics are in the paint under the same thread.

a whole bunch of fun. Congrats on the new purchase.

thanks, I'm pretty excited. I think the wife will enjoy this more than our cat, it was a pretty tight and small interior setup, and wasnt very comfortable. Plus we have a 5 month old now so next summer with the fountain will be a lot more accommodating.
any problems or issues I need to look out for with this boat? |
If you are looking for some MPH raise the drives up some. On 90 Models they were deep. Check the drive height. Of course going up requires some bigger props. My 95 with 502s putting out 600 HP runs low to mid 90's. Drives are 1 Inch up from stock and 90's were even lower than 95's. Plus my boat has the single step. You might get 80-82 by raising up some and props.

more than likely I'll be shopping for a set of motors for this thing. Overall I'm happy with it I'm just use to seeing a custom motor with all billet pulleys and stainless braided lines everywhere then I get this fountain with stock 454 mags.... big difference in appearance and sound. :( hopefully around the 1st of the year I can start looking for motors. All my funds are being saved so I can take time off for my sons next operation.

Have the same set-up but a '91, not sure if the hulls are the same but I think they are.
28P 4 blades run it to an easy 75ish on most days, a couple more in the right conditions maybe. Depends on the day and water conditions. Sometimes if its like glass it won't unstick and see more that about 71. But maybe thats me not getting the best from the tabs and drives, and not the boat. Have fun with it dude, let me know when you upgrade engines and I might pick yours up for spares. |
ok will do.

have a 91 same set up just got it old owner said 73

had an 1989, Mel Riggs tuned 454/427HP motors and same props...78 mph was the best I saw. Have fun!

As far as upgrades just keep in mind the amount you traded for or bought the boat for and then the cost of motors. I mean you could be putting more money into what something is worth or you could get a boat thats faster and new for cheaper. Ive seen these 29's go from 25-34. So just keep that in mind

Valve covers, new pulleys, and stainless steel headers will make it look and sound a whole lot better. :cool-smiley-026: ...but chrome doesn't make a boat go :boat:

I have some motors for ya, they have 13hrs on them and were 100% NEW when I did them last year, Not rebuilt or refurb heads ...NEW!! The only used part that was touching the motors were the engine mounts. 540ci Dart blocks we opened to 557ci, AFR Heads , Cmi Exhaust, NEW HARDIN serp belt and ACC's ALL NEW. You name it! These made 773hp at 6500RPM, and the same torque. At 5200 RPM they make about 100 less HP but torque is only 50 lees or so. XR's are a must if you run in rougher conditions. And I have dyno sheets and all reciepts as well as the dyno was a real # dyno with pump gas and no timing, we built and tuned these to be conservative so I could change pistons and cam to add blowers someday.
