2003 42 Questions
What will a 2003 42 with staggered 525's and XR drives tend to run? Will that setup throw a tail? Pretty good in rough water?
Considering switching over to Foutain from Cigarette and dont know much about them. |

:food-smiley-007::food-smiley-007: :ernaehrung004::popcorn::cool-smiley-027: Not a 100% yet just having problems finding a cig that I am looking for and I want a staggerd setup which get to a whole new price range on the cigs. |
Any one?
|
It will throw a tail, will run right around 80 depending on load, and will run good in rough water.
|
Huh, we must be the only ones.
I believe from other people that have this combo they say right around 82-83 m.p.h. As for rough, depends on if you hate fountains or not on how that will be answered. I do remember a post by Scott Shogren that said he was on a 38 fountain with 700’s in a run once and when it got snotty he couldn’t keep up with the 42 525 boats. |
Can't remember outrunning him here. Speeds are correct above lo-80's with a mild rooster.

My buddy bought a brand new 03 with 525's. The first year it ran a best of 83 empty. After the first year and over 150hrs it would struggle to get over 80 for the next couple of years.
|
Im just going from memory but thought fountain website said mid to high 80's and it was reported that the site was pretty accurate
|
this is a copy and paste from their site.
With a pair of Mercury 525 EFIs, the 42 will hit speeds up to 88+ mph. Granted that is as of today |

That's pretty close.
We were actually running in Lake MI on a typical 4'+ day and I was in a 38 700/SSM 6 boat and could not run with a 42 600 boat. The 600 boat ran right at 90 and the 38 700 boat right at 114, get in 1-3's and it would be a different story. When you get into real water as Downtown 42 has many times on Lake MI you will see how well a 42 really runs. Regards, Team Shogren www.teamshogren.com

Nice
Flying Flat!!!!!!!
Nice pics Team Shogren |
Rocky you need a 2005 or better for the slidding cabin door. Oh and then in 2007 the cockpit changed, might as well move up to that year. Shoot in 2008 the cuddy changed, you need a 2008! :lolhit:
Downtown did your old 42 sell to a guy in the TN area? I think my buddy at LOTO has it now?! Is that possible? |
I think the 42' is one of the most over looked rough water boats out there. They are stellar in rough water, easy to manage boats!!!! I spent sometime behind the wheel of board member BZ's 42 this past summer and I was very impressed to say the least!!!!
|
Not to hyjack the thread but, where does the twin step 38 fall into line in terms of rough water capability and speed. How much better is it than a 35' and how much better is the 42'?
thanks |
O and Downtown Dave great to see u back on the board!!!
|
Ed, not sure where it landed.
MAGIC HOW ARE YOU BUDDY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember all the party poopers in bed by 1AM ????? hahaha I've been lurking for a few months.... |
Please keep in mind when you post a question that opinions are like A.. holes, you know, everybody has one including myself. That's why I ALWAYS tell people to get the unbiased facts. Speedboat magazine, and Powerboat magazine have done tests. I have the last 10 years of these and I am 99.9% sure it's 86 MPH

For one, I don't consider Powerboat to be unbiased. Second, I think I would listen to what Scott Shogren (largest fountain dealer?) and Dowtown42 (former owner of an early 2000s 525 powered 42) have to say about the top speed.

OOOPS, I stand corrected, 03 was before the latest and greatest hull change, low 80's sounds about right. I am disappointed that someone like John Tomlinson or Bob Teague would lie about the tests, they are both highly respected on the racecourse.
|
My ten year old 42 Lightning with original staggered 500 EFIs will do 78 mph with 3 on board and 1000 lbs of fuel. This was with Bblades loaner five blades at 5200 rpm.

The testers don't need to lie , but sometimes the factory will do seceret modifications and spend extra time dialing in the test boat they send . That maybe the reason for not getting the same results as a regular production boat .

42's
Cabin Door - Changed to slider in 2005
Bottom Changed - 2005 Cockpit Changed - 2007 Dash Changed - 2007 Cabin Changed - 2008 The new bottom allows the hull to take more power. The angle of attack and strakes were changed in 2005 to allow flatter faster turning. Hope that helps. I have a 2005 42 Ex with 525's with 225 hours. I run Kendall straight 40weight. With the original equipment non labbed 32P Bravo 1's I got an honest 82 mph GPS after about 2 miles at approx. 5200 with an occasional bump of the rev limiters. I now have BBlades labbed Maximus 30P 15 1/4" and I run up to 81-82 more easily but I have only reached max speed of 83 GPS and that is at about 5300 bumping the rev limiters quite a bit. This was in about 70 degree weather on Lake Conroe with 1/2-3/4 fuel and 2-3' chop.
Are these numbers about right? Scott do I have the "new" bottom? I am friends with Gerrit that you sold a 42 to down here. |
my 12yr old boat with 500hp side by side pushes 80 on gps.
later |
Well Scott..... your opinion on the speed??? keep in mind ALL boats are faster in saltwater where they are tested

Speeds
1999 - 2004 Hull is a little faster (2-3) with same power but cannot take as much HP wihtout getting a bit loose over 115MPH. 2005 and newer will also turn and hold straight line on water better.
2002 42 - 2004 with 525's will run 83-85 with 4 people and fuel (200 gallons). Add 2-3mph with light load 2005-2011 will run 81-84 with 4 people and fuel (200 gallons). Add 2-3 mph with light load. www.teamshogren.com
