has anyone experience any valve spring problems on their earlier 500's as talked about in powerboat mag and other places. am i just lucky ? i have twin 1998 carb 500's and they still pull right up to 5000-5200 depending on air temp. i have not had any problems other than a water pump last year. and of course the raw pump impellers

So you have a 29 with single HP. How close to Reggie's advertised speed of 73 to you come? Single HP in that boat is a really clean setup and looks great.

Hey Outlaw...What are you doing over here?? Sorry to hear about your test results. It isn't making you consider a Fountain is it? Prop testing can be frustrating at times, go with your instincts and you will get it dialed in. All 3 of the Fountains I have owned ran the numbers on the test report from Fountain. The 32 ran better than the performance report from Fountain. Still haven't made it to the Tiki Bar...will see you their soon.

Hey Beak,
You are right about the instinct thing. My instict was to go with 27 3 blades but Hill talked me out of it. At least they are giving full credit on the 26's I sent back in exchange for the 27's that I wanted all along.
$hit - getting props should not be this hard. It's just a pleasure boat, I'm not trying to build a rocket ship.

Early HP500's have junk valve springs - from 1997 to 1999 and early 2000. I have '98 HP's in my 99 38 fever. After not sure how many hours (less than 400 I think) only 5 sets of springs out of 32 sets were still good. For the most part the dampner springs break and sometimes the inner spring. I caught mine just in time. Last winter before as I was winterizing it, I noticed a slight tapping under the valve cover. Pulled the cover off and there were valve spring pieces everywhere. Checked the other motor and same thing there. Ended up pulling out the motor and pulling the oil pans and found a bunch of valve spring parts in the pans as well. If you have HP500's do yourself a favor and pull the valve covers off and look at the springs!! If you catch it before you drop a valve, it's a much cheaper fix.
