1990 fountain 35 lightning
i am considering looking at a 35 lightning 1990. what is the difference between lightning fever etc? this bought has new i believe stock 502s. what type of speeds is expected with this setup and how does it ride in rough water? any opinions comments or suggestions to look for when i go to look at this boat would be greatly appreciated. thanx Rob

I believe in 90 they were known as 33's. I know of an original, one-owner 33. It has the original 365's/Bravo's (rebuilt) turning Mirage 23'sP. The boat would run right @ 70.
It is for sale here in Cincy. It can be seen @www.captainscovemarine.com.
I'm not a salesmen, it was my buddies boat, and I've been in it many times.

bought last year a 93 non step 35 great boat,, got alittle screwed
as was supposed to hve fresh 550hp motors and fresh drives,, so when was delivered ended up pulling motors and going with 450 hp 502's and going thru both drives,, freakin great boat great size in the snotty stuff butr small enough to make easy to manuver in marinas etc,,, dif between fever and lighjtning is: guys with fevers dont get mad,, the fever is the cabin cruiser and the lightning is the race boat,,hihihi,, all my freinds with 38's hate that,, just in fun though,,, anyway the fever windshield goes from one side to the other and u have more room in the cockpit,, the lightning like the 35 you have gunnels to walk yup the side to get to the bow,, dont have to scale the windsheild,, windshild is alot pointier on the lighning,, pers preference both boats look awsome and work even better i will if i go up to next size go to a 42 as i pers prefer the look of the lighning,, 35 and 42 are lightning 27 29 32 38 are all fevers,
mine runs in light chop (which it loves) 5100-5250 dep on load spining either a 26 mirage blade or a 25 hydro 4 blade, i think alittle faster with the mirage but the overall response and out of the hole is awsome with the hydro,, buddy with a 99 38 with 500hps runs a 26 hydro says his boat runs right at 80-82 he can just barely pull me i mean barely..
dont be affraid of the non step fountains they are excell especially in rough and they really hold a nice set in the turns etc
lemme know if any questions

Mxz800,
I believe the 90 had the integrated swim platform. The boat can easily be upgraded to look like a 2002. I have a single step 35, which runs 72 on GPS with a light load. I would think with 502's the boat should run between 75-76 on GPS. I don't think the step made much of a difference on the 35's. I would definitely get it surveyed before buying one. Check all the compartments in the cabin for any signs of water. I had a 92 Checkmate. My Checkmate had a better Gel coat finish than my Fountain. Other than the finish my 35’ has been great.
What is your definition of rough water and where do you boat?

guess my definition of rough is 4-5 footers( not sure whos measuring this is) i bought on the cheasapeake bay. problem is conditions change here fast and it can get nasty fast. i boat with guys that all have 35 or bigger sonics so i need to get a little bigger to make long trips a little more enjoyable. gonna have to wait a while buyer for my checkmate fell thru so i am gonna have to advertise it now. thanx for the Rob

Mxz800,
I boat in Lake Michigan so I know about changing conditions. My 35 is good in 3-4's. I have had the boat out in 8- 10 for a Poker run. The boat got us home but it was a very wet ride. 40 mph was our top speed to prevent pounding. There are some better rough water boats than Fountain's but they cost you in performance on smother water. The non-step boat would perform better in the rough. I would suggest taking whatever boat you plan to buy for a test ride in rough conditions to make sure it is right for you. I really like my 35. It's still trailerable and can be launched by myself. I would hate to miss a day of boating because all my friends were working.
