Going to buy a 1996 42.. Any problems to look for?

Im going to finalize the deal on a 1996 fountain 42 staggered.
buying it with out motors or drives. So what are major problem areas to be on the look out for with the hull?? The history on the boat is it had 700sc's in it and now has been sitting for a few years. Thanks -Joe

On a 96 I would think a good survey of the hull would be in order. In your case the engine and drives will be in your hands after purchase, just make sure the hull is good and you should be in fine shape. No specific issues with a 96 42 that I have ever heard of.

I am curious about what you are paying for the Fountain. I tried buying a 42 w/o power last year but the guy selling was way over priced and woudn't play ball at all. If you don't mind saying I would very intereted in what the right price should be. Thanks.

I'm assuming this is the boat he is referring to, It was @ National OH repo at one point, I noticed whoever has the listing has changed the price a few times

100mph You Better Put Larger Than Those I Got A 98 With 850s And 105 Is The Best Ive Seen 95 To A Hundred Any Day But Pushed It To Get 105, And I Bought Mine From The Same Guy. Its The Bottom That Make The Newer Ones With 850s So Much Faster.

johnnyboatman 09-20-2011 02:57 PM

but i will tell you that with 850s you will outrun several so called 120mph boats atleast we have. good luck with ur project i think u got a good deal on it mine was stripped worse than that.

yea im looking for 105-110 with 850 but i would be happy with anything over 100 to be honest. Big project but ive done way worse projects on boats... its just the size thats a PIA.
what drives are you running?

With right cam and heads....1000hp plus is easily obtainable with 3.3L Whipples and 540's. We are just under 1000hp right now...with stock 525 heads..325cc. Jump up to 360cc and go to a 4 liter blower...and 1000+HP is pretty attainable.

Good Luck.
