Towing a 27 or 29????
What do you use to tow your 27 or 29? I have a F250 diesel 4x4 that will of course pull either boat just fine, but I have been considering a new F-150 and wondering if anyone tows with that?
Thanks! |
I have a 29 fever and I use a 2001 f350 7.3 liter with the Edge and mildly aggresive injectors with aftermarket brake calibers and slotted rotors. In my opnion I would not use a f150. After awhile that gas engine and transmission is really going to feel it. Not to mention stopping with a light duty truck. I just trailered my boat to florida for a week and than back 2300 miles round trip and the 350 pulls great and still got 14+ miles to the gallon.
|
I think a new F150 will tow one. Its the stopping or pulling it out at the ramp which would concern me.
|
I tow my 29 with a Chevy 2500HD Diesel 4x4. Ford350's right, if you never planned on towing your boat very far than maybe but 1/2 ton's really weren't made to tow that kind of weight. 4 wheel drive is also really nice for those slippery ramps.
|
we took my buddys 150 once with my old 27 . trust me there was no problem . i drove . i own f 350 dually so i was quite impressed with the little gassr
|
I think solder44 has a new Eco 150 and a twin 29, no problem.
The Eco has a higher tow rating then the V8! |
PistonHead, I read your other post about moving from south Texas to northern Ohio. You might want to just keep the 4X4 for more reasons than boating. Sun to Snow!!! Good luck
I could plug the Tundra, but that will upset more than a few. :party-smiley-004: |

i tow mine w ith a 1/2 ton dodge 4+4.no problems
|
I dont have a 29 but I have a Cummins 3/4 ton, and I can tell you that once you have a diesel and that flat torque curve I will NEVER have a whiny gas p/u again. Running over hills without the tranny even having to drop a gear is awesome. It really irritates me when a gasser has to drop two gears just to get over a grade when towing

I see Canyon lake on your sig. I have some land there @ Mystic Shores on the north side. Trying to offload it now in preperation of moving. |

I towed my 27 with a F-150 4x4 and it was no issue.
|
Tow with a 1/2 ton Ram, no problem. Just make sure your trailer brakes work. Your only talking about 7500lbs. ish.
|
Towed my 27 with a 1/2T no problems.
Let your trailer brakes stop the trailer, not your truck. |
towing
When i picked up the 27 from Rob Freeman . My truck was broke down the day before. So i used the wife's Expedition and it towed it just fine. I'm very consertive when towing leaving plenty of stopping room and maintaining a safe speed .
|
Towing specs on the new F150 Eco is 11,300#. That's with a 3:73 rear and you can order 4:10s. The twin turbo gives good boost at low rpms. The truck has been tested recently (I believe it was Motor Trend) where they compared the 5.0, 6.2, and the Eco Boost. You can probably find the test online. I tow my 29' Fever twin with a lot less than the Eco Boost but I only have a 1.3 mile tow to the ramp.
|
I have a 29 that weighs 8560 on dmv scales. I wouldnt usw a half ton to move it around the block imo.

I alway's liked Low Lock ( 4 wheel drive ) for pulling out or backing it up my hill. My 1/2 pulled fine. Just wasn't heavy duty enough in the brakes. You need 4 wheel disc . The 3/4 ton did not even sag when I put it on the hitch. Unlike the 1/2 ton.
|
I have a 29 Fountain with Twin 454s and I tow it with a 1/2 ton GMC Denali Sierra. It tows it with no problem.
|
2001 GMC 2500 Diesel is my primary and tows with no problem.
I have towed it with a 1500 z71 for 300 miles and it didn't miss a beat. I will say on a steep ramp pulling a wet boat out it struggled a tad but nothing to worry about. Just watch your oil more than normal along the way when towing long distances F-150 should be fine. If towing the 29 and it has two motors I would watch my "recommended" towing capacity of the 150. Not saying it won't do the job but the insurance company might think different if you get into an accident. |
I tow our 27' with 2011 Sequoia 4x4. Works fine on long trips and short trips.
|
I tow my 29 single with a Trailbalzer SS. No problems. Rear air suspension brings it right up to level. 0-60 times drop from 6 seconds to 10 seconds though.
|
I have a twin 29 and pull it with my 2011 F-150 FX4 (5.0). The towing capacity is fine, but I only pull it 4 or 5 miles to the ramp and back. I think 4X4 would is an absolute requirement. If I were going to pull it a long distance or frequently, I would go back to a Power Stroke F-250/350 or Duramax.

The Eco has a higher tow rating then the V8! I did the analysis of having that diesel and having my EB. Gas savings and maint cost I will be ahead 2300 bucks this year. So the truck is paying for its self. |

That's not really fair. Tundra specs are more comparable to 3/4 ton trucks from the "Domestic" brands.

Dont let dealers fool you or brand commercials. I researched this EB for months and kicked around the idea of a ram for a little bit, sorry I dont know much about tundra, I would never buy just my opinion. I cross checked brand websites with independent rating agencies to ensure that the brands werent lying. It depends on which model you get but Everybodys half tox maxes out righ at the 10-3 10,400 range withe EB taking the cake at 11,300. One thing about the EB that other half tons and even diesels dont provide is you get all that 420lbs of torque at like 1500rpms not at much higher RPM's like others. |

Compare brakes, axles, etc between auto makers. Edit: Honestly, I'm not one that's a fan at towing at/near maximum capacity. I'm looking at upgrading tow vehicles and not considering light-duty (1/2-1ton) trucks this time around. |
Bottom line is, every truck has a purpose based on ones need and capacity. That is why there are so many brands and models. Was not fooled about towing capacity when it is in black and white, and you can hold a manufacturer to this standard.

You can buy a new 3/4 ton Ram crew cab 4wd diesel or a couple year old fully loaded 4500 Kodiak crewcab Duramax/Allison with really low miles for that or less. |

[QUOTE=Plowtownmissile;3618202]Saw a fully loaded 1/2 ton Ford EcoBoost with a sticker price of $51k :eekdrop:
QUOTE] What? King Ranch or Platinum I assume. My hunting buddy just bought a zero miles fully loaded XLT ecoboost crew cab 4x4 with leveling kit and custom wheels and nitto offroad tires, sprayed in liner, undercoating and every extended warranty they offer (interior, paint, drivetrain etc) for 31K out the door. I didnt believe it until I saw the final paperwork. Thats really the only reason for this thread. Its made me consider the same truck.......for that price its hard not to buy!!! Beaumont, TX is where he bought incase anyone was going to ask. |

You have to factor in what you are doing, money, etc. For me Its wife and I going 30mins north between memorial day and Labor day. So this the EB works where no other 1/2 ton in my mind would do it safely. This is about the biggest load I would put on this truck. If I was going to tow this thing 5-6 hours with thousands of pounds of added gear and people every weekend I wouldnt be in this truck. But if your the standard boater and go maybe an hour or two tops with the wife and one or two kids, this truck makes perfect sense. Just weigh your needs and your wallet, if you have never been in a diesel before trust me you will not understand the true cost until your into one and it hurts. If you have a 300 a month payment plus 100 insurance and a gas tank a week which is 150 bucks, a diesel could and will cost you a cool grand or more to operate per month. |
29 twin here , I tow with a ccsb duramax , would never pull with a 1/2 gasser , not that it wont but i sure feel a lot better with my kids and my wife in the truck knowing its built to stop that much weight..
