I wanna put in a TV

So I want to put a tv down in my cuddy to just watch movies on etc... How did you guys that have done this power the tv..? do they make a 12 volt television..? or did you go with a inverter of some sort..? I also was looking for one with a built in DVD player..? any ideas would be great.

I have a small 9" TV that is both AC 110V and 12V DC. You can purchase this size with a built-in DVD player (mine is an older VHS model) at just about any larger TV store. This option is portable which could be a bonus, or not. I use it in both the boat and in the camper.

I had thought about doing that in my cabin for years. Just couldn't happen, and the thrashing around could be a problem. After all these years, they finally came out with the thing that worked well.

iPad.

Assuming you don't have a 120vac generator on-board, you have two choices, 1) a 120vac TV and use with a 12 volt inverter (make sure the wattage of the inverter is large enough to handle the wattage needs of the TV, or 2) some TV's accept 120vac and 12vdc... just run this type of TV directly from your your 12vdc wiring.

And since all US TV over-the-air signals are now digital, make sure the TV you select has a digital tuner built in, called ATSC (most modern sets have this). If you use an older TV that doesn't have a digital tuner built in, you will need to add an external digital converter box (Radio Shack has them).

Im looking for a newer flat screen that I can mount. I didnt want to have to run a inverter but it looks like I will have to

Naaaa, there's plenty of 12vdc flat screen TV's out there. Here's a few:

4 Attachment(s)
Go to the dept stores and look at the power cords. Many will have that black box in the line that converts the 120AC incoming to 12VDC outgoing. Just buy the right plug from Radio Shack to plug into the TV and wire direct to a 12v source.
As far as DVD use, is your head unit a CD only or can it play DVD's too? I installed a head unit that also played DVD's and used the V-Out and connected to the V-In on the TV. Made for a very clean 4 speaker permanent home theator system. :)
Just an option if you already have a DVD head unit.
Not sure I'd worry about digital or what not, unless you plan on connecting to a dish or so at the dock.

Ignore the V-out and A-in jacks, those were for the pre- TV permanent install. Used to just sit TV on counter and use the V-out jack as a quick connection point. A-in was used for easy connection point for MP players. Were removed shortly after the TV was mounted and all wiring was hardwired.

This install was some 5 yrs ago though. Haven't used a DVD for a couple yrs. Now all movies are played from my iPhone/itouch or DL'd from iTunes.

How do you keep it from getting ripped off the wall in rough water?

US1 Fountain 03-10-2012 08:51 AM

You can hang off mine. Not only was it mounted using the back mounting screws, but more importantly it fits tight within the box surround. The key is to mount it solid from the get go so it can't move at all, allowing it to keep working looser. I doubt the standard home wall mounts would work for long. A couple waves and you might break the back of the set out.

I have a '97 47 fountain and changed the tv about 5 years ago. The only one that was HDTV flat screen with built-in DVD at the time that I could find that ran on 12 volt was by Toshiba. I'm sure there are many others now. I used the wall mound provided and bolted it with stainless bolts to the existing marine plywood the old tv was mounted to. I have never had a problem and I run a lot on big water on Lake Michigan.

Very nice install! What do you need to look for to be able to play videos from an iPhone/iPad?

I'm thinking of changing my head unit this year to one that has USB connector. Do these 12V TV's that have USB ports allow for the iPhone/iPad hookups?

US1 Fountain 03-10-2012 09:15 AM

Thanks. You need the cord from Apple that has the iPhone flat jack, the RCA plugs and a USB jack. I think it was a $50 cord, but from what I understand you have to use the Apple product to work as they install some type of electrical thing within the cord itself. Non Apple cords won't work, or so I've read.

My TV was before the USB craze. :) Not sure why todays sets wouldn't' work with the USB, seems to be the trend, and the HDMI stuff

Pookie, I'd venture to guess your 47 rides a little smoother than our 27's and 32's :)

I just put one in running off a inverter.

I also have just put a flat screen in my 47' however I had to put it on the forward wall behind the anchor locker (the last owner had one there and torn up the fabric and logo,.... sour) I run my in AC only I do have to run my generator as I would if I was using a DC powered TV to keep the battery charger running I also found a lot of unused wires on my boat when doing the work later to find they were the wires to the fans, and an AC & DC for the TV on the starboard side along with wires for the docking lights to the anchor locker, all of these were ran to the breaker panel and to the breakers labeling them installed by Fountain but not used.I'm going to look into putting Clairon's CMV1.

If you guys that want to use your iPads/iPhones you might want to look into a TV with an HDMI which is a better signal than the composite (RCA connections) One cable for audio and video. With that being said I think you can't get HD out of the first generation ipad so you have to do some searching on apples web site below.

I think I am going to go with a 22" LCD and now I just found out that DVD's are becoming a thing of the past and everything it leaning towards bluray........

Blu ray has been out for years. Keep in mind to take advantage of blu-ray you will want something that can do 1080P,,,,,,, most do at this time.

But to tell you the truth, on that small of a screen standard resolution movies that you have downloaded to a I-pad/ I phone/ what ever will be fine.

US1 Fountain 03-18-2012 11:54 AM

No offense, but I know bigger is better, right? , but won't a 22" be too big in the cabin of a 27? Mine is only a 13" and it's plenty big enough with a sharp picture, and this is with having a longer cabin. Just thinking too large of a screen will make for a grainy pic since you'll be sitting closer to it.

Just an observation

I don't know Jerry, porn looks pretty good on my 32" computer screen,,,,,,,,,,,, of course I have to stay at least 12" from the screen.:whistle:
