Shore Power and AC on staggered 35' Lightning

Installing 30 amp shorepower, main panel and duplex outlet in the galley, battery charger under the rear seat and reverse cycle AC (6500btu) under the sink. Tried to get pictures of installation from Fountain but they are not responding. Does anyone have pictures or has done this on a 35? Looking to see the actual locations of the shore power receptacle and AC panel that the factory option would do.

Jpzaluski 04-14-2012 06:32 AM

My 38 has factory AC. The shore power plug is on the port side, slightly rear of the very leading edge of the windshield. The AC breaker panel is in the front (bow) side of that column in the cabin just ahead of the sink. The AC controls are just underneath that

Jpzaluski 04-14-2012 06:33 AM

If you want to text me today I can take you some pics, I'll be in the boat all day 540-273-066 nine

Call legend marine, they had a 08 with factory gen and AC. The ac unit was under the front part of the U-seat.

A guy on this site had the boat for a while, looked like a nice setup.

boatstogo 04-14-2012 08:12 AM

Chuckak, I have the same boat and was comtemplating similar upgrades. Would be interested in hearing what you find out and seeing end result. Thanks

Done all that to my 32.

Don't forget to include a galvanic isolator in your ground wire after the shore plug.

Really?

I found a picture on my other computer of the boat, it's dark but maybe I can clean it up tonight.

Provided I don't get called out for work.

It's an electronic diode contraption :) that keeps your AL. drives from being ate up when you plug into shorepower. Also a saftey devices. Not to mention when your dock neighbor uses an automotive battery charger to charge his batterys, instead of a marine charger. There IS a difference.

Very simple to install. Cut the green ground wire just after your shorepower plug and install the GI inline. Done. Safe. Happy Boating. :D

I am currently doing this exact install in my 32! I bought a 5000 btu window unit from Home Depot and a triplite 2250 watt inverter/charger along with 2 Odyssey batteries and 2 blue top Optimas. The custom audio shop I am using has done this many times and the owner has the exact same set up. They are installing shore power and the pannel for the hook up will be next to my right hip on the inside of the boat (along with the custom cup holder and audio wired Clarion remote they are installing. We are doing it like this because I will also be using a Honda eu2000i generator for those long days at the cove and the cord will just go around the windshield and into the panel. This way I don't have to cut anywhere in the hull.
The A/C unit is being mounted in the cabin on the storage closet wall. 6" of the evaporator will be inside the close and 3" will come out into the firewall by driver's feet but will barely be noticeable after they install the white screen around it. They are also making a custom drip pan that drains into the bilge for any condensation the unit makes inside or outside of the closet. I went up yesterday to check on it and they already have the holes cut for the sub boxes under the rear seat and also for the a/c unit. I will be back up there Fri and take some pics if anyone is interested in seeing them. Jay

Will do. Yeah, I took my porta potty out to make room for some of the equipment/amps etc. I'll take pics when I go back up there on Fri.

I removed the cooler and located my AC there. In doing so, I actually gained storage space.

A buddy located his AC under his bed in his 42.

I would love to see pics of this, let me get this straight....this is just a houshold a/c unit?

Could one be installed in the cabinet where my cooler is? The hot air would blow out to the gunwhale right?

Yes you could mount it where your cooler is. If you scroll up to post #19, US1 explains this is where he mounted his. I considered this too and was going to have the exhaust air flow through an insulated duct, up and behind the hollow wall, just under the glove box and attach to a vent where the hand hole cover under the glove box on the bulkhead by the passenger's knees.
But I use my cooler and didn't want to lose it so mounting my in the closet.

US1 Fountain 04-18-2012 01:18 PM

We never used the cooler, so that wasn't a issue with us to loose it.

Your biggest obsticle will be to rid the heat from the unit itself, otherwise should work fine.

Finally got a minute. I lightened up the panel picture but don't see the AC/GEN panel. Interesting, I wonder where the factory put it. You can see that the AC unit was under the front cushion.

The gen fit pretty well, I wish I could have moved on this boat, would have been a nice ride.

Cheers,

tim brown 04-22-2012 07:29 PM

wildman , you have a boat airconditioner and so does us1 . we want to see the house window airconditioner . I want to see it installed in the wall under the dash/bathroom wall .freaky fast , I need more pics and info on your a/c . thanks Tim

Wildman_grafix 04-22-2012 07:44 PM

Sorry Tim,

The original guy wanted pics of a 35 staggard install and I said I would do it when I could. Just takes me forever with my work schedule.

As for the house unit,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, seems to me the hot exhaust and condensation would be a PITA.

tim brown 04-22-2012 08:47 PM

yours is really nice . that is big money for me . I forgot that was the topic . sorry . I want to see the unit installed under the dash . the heat would not be the problem in the cabin if you were in the cuddy sleeping.

FREAKY FAST 04-23-2012 03:44 PM

Ok guys, I got a pic but not of the a/c unit installed. The install shop has only been able to wire the boat and install the underwater lights. The a/c unit is a 5000 btu unit I got from Home Depot for $99. The stereo shop said this is what they usually install. They are making a custom drip pan that drains the condensation to the bilge area. They are installing my TripLite 2250 watt power inverter in the bottom corner of the storage closet that the a/c unit will be inside. About 4" of the a/c unit will come out into the under/upper side of the driver's dash. I nice white screen will block the ugliness from anyone who is sitting on the back bench. So I only have a pic of the hole they've cut. Sorry for quality of pic. More to come.

very cool keep me updated. I am very interested . I have already bought a 5000 btu ac unit at sams club . I got it 3 weeks ago to do some thing like this . more pics , also the drip pan .how many batterys are they installing for the ac unit ? also how long will it run. thanks Tim

Are these home units built to take a beating?

+1 pic of the install will be interesting.

Chuckak 04-23-2012 10:31 PM

Wildman, thanks for the pictures, I looked at that boat too but it was out of my price range. I really did not want to put the AC unit that far forward due to the beating it will take, but I may not have a choice unless I want to lose the cooler spot under the corian countertop. For the guys considering the window AC units, unrestricted fresh air flow on the evaporator(hot) side is imperative or it won't keep up on the really hot days. This means it can't blow around the same hot air.
The window unit will not take the beating as long as true marine unit will. But for $100 you can replace a bunch of them before equaling the cost of the true marine system. I considered converting one of these window units to water cooling as an alternative too.

FREAKY FAST 04-24-2012 09:02 AM

I asked the installer about the units taking a beating and he said he hasn't had an issue yet and has this same set up on his Baja H2X. Time will tell.
I will for sure post pics of the install for you guys as it progresses.

The power inverter/battery charger that is also going in the storage closet mounted to the floor is a Tripp Lite APS1250.

The installer is also molding me some custom cup holders for the front seats out of fiberglass which will be covered with white upholstery. The driver's side will also have a Clarion MW1 wired remote molded into it. Pic isnt the greatest but it's all he sent. Pic is also pre fiberglass and just a mockup as of now.
Stay tuned!

US1 Fountain 04-24-2012 11:03 AM

Getting there!
My biggest beef is 2 small cup holders in the whole cockpit, and that's if you get the cupholder option. Where do they expect us to put our beer while driving? :)

Wildman_grafix 04-24-2012 02:33 PM

Have you or the installer did the calculation on how long the unit can run off of the batteries?

How many and where will they be mounted?

+1 on the cup holders,,,,,,,, I have none. Well a friend gave me 4 to install,,,,,,,,, now if I knew what box I stored them in.

tim brown 04-24-2012 05:35 PM

keep it coming , more pics and imfo.

yes, 1.5-2 hours with the 2 Odyssey batteries and the 2 Optima blue tops. I will have a Honda eu2000i on the front deck of the boat providing electricity while parked most of the time and shore power when at slip.
