I was wondering if -2 or -3 lower would work better.

If you have bravo drives you will not be able to run 15 dia props with 3's unless you hack off part of the lower unit. But Higher up props are better for top end. not sure how high your drives are and I dont know anything about 42's

get the 3'' install spacer you will have more options
