Default Hp500 motors

After my buddy had problems with his motors this weekend it has me worried. I have a blown hp500 motor with almost 400hrs on it. I've changed the oil and take it out and after running it 20hrs the oil looks good, but burned about a quart. I'm just wondering how often they need gone through and some preventive maintenance as I am new to high performance boats.

It's a boat, I'd be more worried if something didn't break lol.

I know something will break, just wondering what hours they should be gone through. If they need to be gone through every 500hrs I'm gonna pull it this winter and go through it so it dint break in boating months.

I know man I'm just kidding. I don't have any experience with those engines but, I'd say 400 is getting close to the point of at least top ends. These questions are hard to answer as everyone runs their engines differently along with maintenance. I know people with 600 hrs. I'd go through them this winter like you said, I wouldn't worry about it too much now as there's not much you can do short of pulling them now and having down time. Good luck!

Yeah that's the main advice I hear is at least pull the heads. Been thinking about aluminum heads to let it breath better. I'll be honest gas motors aren't my forte. I've had diesel pulling trucks for years. I do know with the supercharger you want to decompress the motor. Diesel motors have special head gaskets you can get to decompress it. There anything like this for gas motors? Right now I'm only running 4psi. Boat runs about 77 mph with 3ppl and full of gas. Like to get it up in the 80's. Did find it odd that when I bought it, it still has the original carb on top of blower. These carbs enough fuel with the blower on top?

Friend has same motor with similar hours and just broke a pushrod. You should think about top end refresh or springs for sure in the off season..

Thanks for the advice, seems like that's the main advice. I'm thinking of putting some Aluminum heads on it.

It's hard to do motor work in the middle of the season, but I guess it's better than a complete engine replace due to a blown motor. Top end job always seems to be the needed maintenance on those 500's around the 350-500 hour mark. May need to be a bit ahead of the norm since you have a blower motor.
