Who can/will cut down my windshield?
1 Attachment(s)
I have a 27' Fountain with the tall framed plexiglass windshield. Anyone within a few hours of Pikeville, KY that will cut it down to the newer style height? Depending on price, location, and project time left will determine if I get it done now or wait till next winter. Thanks for any and all suggestions/offers.

Anyone?
|
I heard there was a guy in Owensboro, KY who could do it / has done it. I'll see if I can get the info.

I found someone that will do it. I'm very close to committing. Anyone know if the low profile windshield will still keep the wind off me?
|
Friend had a 2005 29 low profile windshield he said when you stand up wind is in your face when your sitting down wind is still in your face
I would go little higher than the factory low profile windshield but that is just my opinion. |
Exactly what I told him by PM. Somewhere in between current and factory height. I also suggested using some masking tape across the windshield to simulate the upper rail - don't want to be staring at a rail all day or hunched over so that it is not in your line of sight.
I would also color coordinate to your boat (instead of just white) and tint the windows slightly. Here is a 29' vs my 35' windshield. You can easily see the relationship between the headrest and upper frame on the 29' and partially see the same relationship on my 35'. Huge difference and he ate wind all day long! http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...pshbzznoro.jpg

Thanks guys for all the advice. Project is a no go now... I could've swore my windshield was plexiglass because when I look through it, I have a distorted view. Also have a scratch on a side glass. You know where assuming gets you... Found out yesterday it is glass. Will cost WAY more. I feel dumb now but I will admit when I'm wrong. Guess I'll find something else to do before the festivities. I am going to tint the windshield. Might paint the trailer as well! After hearing wind issues I'm not as disappointed.

Ah that sucks - I was hoping you were going to get this done. I'm interested in seeing his work.

I cut my 38 Lightning windshield down and went back with tinted Lexan. This was my winter project and it turned out pretty good.I went with 3/16" thick Lexan. I have a cut set of 1/4" thick Lexan that I couldn't get into the frame. Probably me. I'll sell to you for $150 shipped. I took 8" off my windshield.

Hey, jbooten. I spoke with Darrin today about the windshield. He seems like a nice guy. He will have his Fountain in town next week, and I'm planning to go over and check out his work.
I'm close to pulling the trigger!

I'm close to pulling the trigger! Wish I could but oh well. Should be getting mine tinted this weekend but who knows?? (No one local wants to tackle it... I guess since they don't have a machine that cuts it out for them they don't want to or can't. |
Had mine cut down a few years ago, even at high speeds still plenty of protection! :drink:
|
It really depends how tall you are. I'm 5"11 and I don't have a wind issue sitting down. I hate sitting with the seat flat or on the bolster, so I just purchased a good pair of wrap around sunglasses. I'm bypassed to the look of the low profile.

Where did you have yours done? Local to you would not be that far from me, would like to have a lower one. |
Your '06 has a tall windshield??? I don't know that I've seen one of that year with a tall windshield.

What color do y'all think I should paint the windshield frame? I'm thinking purple is really the only choice, based on the dominance of purple in the paint scheme.

Let me know if you need top rail. I have top rail, bottom rail, side rail, center front rail, some gasket and some plastic insert trim. Have plexi windshield and have Lexan cut.
|
will do

well $hit Rob - that didn't help at all ! LOL
Actually, most of the accents in the cockpit are Red (steering wheel, bezels, steps, cupholders). But then Orange and Yellow stitching on seat backs. Love the orange and yellow, but it would take a lot of work and cash to change everything over to orange. It's almost like orange wasn't an option on those components back in 2002. Then again, maybe I'm just strange and like orange. http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...g/DSC02452.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...g/DSC02448.jpg

Personal preference. From the photo purple or yellow or orange. All depends on which color you want to focus on and make more dominant

I don't like to share pricing. Call R lll, he will quote you.
I find him to be very competitive. Matter of fact he has my boat now. Doing a new dash and some prop work! |

Looks faster already!
|
Haha thanks! Maybe that's what I needed to hit the 80mph mark? 78mph GPS last year.
|
I'd stick with white. If you must add color, go with red to match the dash accents.
Just my worthless 2 cents. |

Thanks, was hoping someone local to you had the talent. |
Not that I know of, but if you need extra frame I kept my old windshield. Would be happy to donate.

So did you buy a short one and have R lll do the install? |
R3 had one in stock.
|
I might be in the market for some upper frame. Let me know what you have.
Thanks. easyrider1340 at gmail

I have the whole windshield let me know what you need for length.
|
Had a new low profile installed on my 38 after tall one damaged. Cost me $6,200 inc labor. Robbed but it is perfect. Brad Shields at Formtec 800 554 7527 can do it. Found him after the fact. Not sure if still around.

Called Darrin Bean today to schedule my windshield mods - we're all set for mid-July. Wife and I will be on the Gulf Coast anyway, celebrating our anniversary.
He's doing the windshield and painting all of the grab handles in the cockpit and seat pedestals to match the windshield frame, as well as my drive lowers (black). They were never properly painted after the nose cones were installed by the previous owner. I've seen one example of his work, and it looked nice. I'll certainly post pics after complete, but will try to post some during the mods, if possible. Super pumped! |
KWright - thanks for the windshield frame, arrived in condition just as you described. Took boat to Darin Bean on Monday - she's currently "under the knife" ! Can't wait to get it back - it will be like getting a new boat! :bananalove:
