Why are the controls on the "wrong" side?

I watched the Reggie Fountain documentary and if I remember correctly he said the left throttle is for unobstructed range with the throttle. Right hand/arm you normally don't have as much 'movement' as you do with your left. The old ones were also set up side by side for racing driver throttle man.
At first I thought I would hate left hand but it really doesn't bother me anymore.

I can't see going all the way back into the seat to work the throttles all the time. It's really nice to have it out in the open. It's one of the best things about my fountain cockpit actually
