Project Barn Find 42
9 Attachment(s)
Soo a few weeks ago I bought a 42 lightning that had been stored in a barn with no doors and no cover on her for 4-5 years. One engine is down, the other to my delight fired right up. I spent a few hours scrubbing this mess and gave up! Its all getting replaced. Started pulling engines today. I will post pics as i do work, mostly weekend project. I can not wrap my mind around how anyone pays this much for something and just lets it got to hell like this. Oh well his loss.

Wow! That is freakin wild. I can see that happening with an older 42, but a 525 boat is crazy! Did it ever go under? I hope you bought it right and it turns out to be a great boat for you. Good job
You're lucky, she looks sweet! Replacing cockpit and cabin. From the pics it looks like it could be cleaned, rather than replacing for 5-10x the price. (just my opinion)
Never went under. Everything electrical on the boat works fine. Its a fresh water boat with a couple of tours to the Destin poker run with the FPC. The port engine lost oil pressure and it went to hell after that. Not sure what is wrong with the engine yet. I am ready to set them out and tear them down. The crusty old gen set fired right up and ran like a champ. I bought it right, i can part it out if need be, but lets save that for a last resort.

damn, im always looking for a deal like that. you find it on craigslist or through word of mouth? cant wait to see the transformation! i hope you take that ugly wrap off!!!!
From all Fountain fans, thanks for rescuing it.
It is amazing how anyone could let a boat get into such a state, particularly when it's not really an old boat..... RR |
U want to sell the gen. I'm lookin for one for my 42
Well its painted not a wrap. It kinda grows on you. I wanted an American flag boat but this one came up first. She seems pretty solid other than the filth. I took a huge risk to get this deal, it was dead in the barn, no power and we couldn't get the engine hatch to open. I had to take his word on the 525efi and generator. Turns out a shorted out battery will keep the shore power from operating any 12v functions.

I'd clean her up, fix the motor that's down, and rock that b!tch at least one season. Take some time to enjoy her while you decide exactly what you want to do. Congrats on an awesome find on a great boat, staggered at that.

I just put my 525's for sale in the swap shop. May be a cheap way for you to get back on the water. Take a look.

Just a quick update. Replaced the ignition switches (i had no keys) the starboard engine fired right up and ran as it should. The port engine not so lucky, had some coolant under the valve cover and some sign of water intrusion on #6. Pulled the engines and delivered the port engine to Eddie Young for damage report. The genset runs good but i was not able to test the ac output. As we were pulling the engines i noticed the transom was weak around 2 of the exhaust tips so its time to get itchy. I will post pics when i get to something interesting. We all know what pulling engines looks like! Its going to be a long winter.
Because going to Harbor Freight and spending $20 on a tarp and some twine is just too much f-in trouble! OMG LAZY...I about cried looking at the pictures. Looks like it found a good home though and I look forward to seeing the updates! Sorry to hear about the transom that sure adds an unwelcome repair... on the bright side, at least you will have the chance to paint up the bilge and make it all pretty again like it deserves!
The real tragedy was that the cockpit cover was still in the bag in the closet. It was a surprise to the previous owner when i ask him about it.

Looks like its time for a transom. While I'm at it does anyone have any input on changing the x dimensions?
Those were very high to start with and should be left alone they ran very well.
ouch.... !!!!!
got to start tearing down that transom! get back to work ! summer is just around thecorner!!! |
One good thing is when you get it all redone and looking new again you will have a nice new oem cover for it.....That's a plus
Lol aint that the truth.
Should be finished derigging it this week. The bottom half should be a breeze to get out, the exhaust tips have been leaking so its pretty wet. Im hopefully not going to need stringers. |
In my 42 the stringers were butted up bare to the transom. Freaking retards.
Same with my 32,,,,,,
Great. Might as well plan on stringers as well. Guess i should drill some holes tomorrow night and find out.
I'd just start cutting out the transom. You will know if you need stringers when you get to the bottom. No need to cut holes in good glass. Just my .02.
Don't tear into it too much or you will have a huge mess to fix. Great boat and great find. Eddie knows the x numbers . How much did you pay anyway? did I miss the price somewhere
Na, i never put the price out. Just figured that was better kept between me and the previous owner. Didnt get much accomplished this weekend, decided to take the wife to a casino and help them with the light bill!
You could just check the stringers at the motor mounts.
You can hit it with a hammer all around and that will tell you if it's rotten. Better then any piece of chit moisture meter in my opinion.
They sound solid with the hammer. And my engine alignment was still perfect. Should know for sure this weekend, I'm starting surgery Saturday.
any update?
Got my port engine back from Eddie Young. Great guys by the way. Been busy with the kids on the weekends so not much progress until school is out next week. I need to order my upholstery from fountain but i had been dealing with joanne and she is apparently not there any more.
