Towing 38 0r 42 Lightning with Excursion V-10
#11
IF you went to a PSD Excursion, you could invest in some of the bolt-ons above and make it a decent tow vehicle for that kind of weight.
BUT, coupling the Ex with the V10, it's not not really up to the task. It has all the same running gear as the PSD versions, but you just don't have the complete package.
I've got friends have towed:
38 Cigarette Top Gun
38 Hustler Slingshot
42 Cigarette Tiger
...ALL with PSD Excursions. All of them have moved on to bigger trucks.

You might want to run setup across a scale, 10,000 lb ready to hit the water sounds light to me.

Thanks for all the input. I'll add a few more things. I take 5 longer poker run trips per year. 6-7 hours towing. The rest of the time it is to the ramp and back 5-25 miles depending on which lake. 99% of the rest of the time it is a daily driver.

Hijack alert: I'm looking to buy something to tow my 47 next spring. Weight with boat and trailer is about 20,000 lbs. Not looking to do any super long hauls, mostly local within 30 miles and an occasional trip within 150 miles. Suggestions?

I have a 2002 with a V10. It just turned 70K. Pull my 38 Powerquest with it. Would be great to have a 7.3L if I went very far. I leave it hooked to the boat all summer and put in and out. I have towed several times with it. No problem, yes it likes gas, but would hate to have a diesel and only put 100 miles a year on it. Works great for my needs. I put it away for the winter by the end of November.

I believe it. My 38 and steel trailer, is 13,000, with 1/4 tank of fuel.
My buddy bob has towed his 42 all over the place with a V10 F350 dually. Works just fine. I tow my 38 with a 454 vortec Chevy dually. Also does just fine. 900 mile round trip last year to loto, it got 8mpg, hand calculated.
If I had to choose, I'll take chassis over engine any day. Both is nice, but i feel chassis is a necessity, engine is just a bonus.
We have a fleet of 99-04 V10 powered F350 crew cab dumps at work, and a a half dozen of them with the 6.0 and 7.3L diesels. The V10 trucks now mostly have around 150-200k miles on them, and generally, they havent skipped a beat. The diesels versions, have been problem children. These trucks go out 5 days a week and run 8 hours a day without being shut off, so they have prob 2-3 times the hours, other trucks have with similar miles. And they aren't babied. Most of the guys drive them like rentals. Generally, I think the V10 is a workhorse.

V10s are soooooo homo. They are like 180hp and sound like a box fan that is 10 years old. Plus with 200k (or whatever you said) it would be riding on the bump stops and be a ticking time bomb for a vented block pulling a 42. I'd rather risk pulling it with a 40 year old station wagon..
