Big difference between a 40 ft boat and a 28 ft boat.
SO what you are saying is your 29 Fountain put up against a 28 Checkmate, same HP, same prop and X dimension IN 3 ft seas or MORE.
The Fountain will beat the Checkmate.
I say BS
The OP didn't ask about a 40 ft Fountain.

BS - not in rough water.
The X dimension Fountain runs in rough water will blow out.
I owned a Checkmate 251 and could walk away from 27 Fountains in rough water.
Maybe I was just a much better driver.
Insanity can add a lot of speed in rough water.
I have a video of my Scarab racing a 40 Fountain that had more HP than me and HE couldn't keep the props in the water.
The video has been posted here before.

have a 29 fountain 525 efi bought in 2009, run mostly on small midsize lakes rivers here in Cal, as said before slower takeoff (to plane) and faster top speed than twin smallblocks, less maint floats a little higher in tail when at rest very happy with it. that being said, I lived on lake Huron for about 45 years before moveing to Lala land and lake Huron as well lk Mich has sent many a ship to the bottom,So if you plan on ventureing out far offshore, and not keeping a vigilante eye on weather, you get as big a boat with twins as you can, Of course Huron and Michigan if you dont watch weather will give you a one way ticket to the bottom even your running a 60 footer with Quads. In summary I would love to run my 29 on lake Huron, and have run alot of smaller craft as well, I believe the ride would be fine up to about 3 footers, then you just run a little slower, youll get a feel for what the boat likes, I personaly never got much of a thrill pounding the piss out of my boats en passengers. one footnote, the 29 hull got a redisign in I think 2003, so go that or newer if your able, Hope this helps, any thing I can answer for you shoot me email

I have no idea why people are arguing about a subject that 95 percent of the people in this country aren't lucky enough to particiapte in. Anyways, hopefully the OP will have good luck finding a great boat.

Had a 32 (22' for the haters) and sold it last spring, one of the best boats I have owned and never got sprayed with any water,,
own a 35 now (28' for the haters) and again I have never gotten sprayed with any water either, must be lucky I guess I must have bought the only 2 dry ridding Fountains,

I think you lot taking into account the brand racing boat
I think that in this sport 70% goes to the captain

If a 29' fountain thread can drum up this much action, they must be a pretty awesome boat after all. I feel like mine is worth $10k more after reading all this. Just attach this thread to the NADA book value when submitting the loan to the bank.

Discussions like these are part of the reason I've loved owning a Fountain.
I read all the chatter, listen to all the BS on the docks or at the bar, and then we go boating and the boat does the talking. It gets pretty quiet after that.
