27 fever

hey guys. looking into finding a 27 fever with a 496 HO. any pros and con would be great. love the look. are they driver friendly? hows the ride? top end ? etc... any input would be great thanks!!!

jtbooten 01-30-2020 03:14 AM

Do a search, there is a lot of information on this question. I have owned both (not with a 496), get a 29. The 27 is a small boat, especially after you get use to it. The 29 is a popular boat, the price reflects that. PM me If you have any specific questions. I’m not crazy about a 496 single. Propped right, it may hit 70.

ALL_IN! 01-30-2020 07:27 AM

Where do you plan to use the boat?
As Jtbooten said, it's a small boat (cockpit and cabin). On the 3rd outing, I told my wife we need a bigger boat. Ride-wise, it was perfect for our local river which doesn't get rough at all.
From a 27, we went to a 35, and from 35 to a 42. ...and the 42 is still not big enough! LOL

Good luck ! Get what you want to afford and start saving for the next upgrade!

I also own a 27'-29' 1990 Fountain 29' great size boat 2 small blocks #1 my 02! The 29' also a little faster! But on a lake get the single 496 or 525 good luck!

Delo1142 01-31-2020 10:43 AM

I was in the market for a 26-28 single engine sport boat. I came across an 04 27 496HO with 68hrs on it and pulled the trigger. I came out of a 23' center console so to me this thing rode like a Cadillac, lol. I boat on the Detroit River and Lake Erie. I definitely pick and choose the days that I'm out on Erie but I love my 27.

thirdchildhood 01-31-2020 12:17 PM

I tackle Lake Erie regularly in a 22' boat!

TURBOED 02-02-2020 12:13 AM

I'm just glad i don't have to go boating on a lake or river, ocean for me and my 27 handles it like its nothing.

carcommander 02-05-2020 09:09 AM

I have owned a 2005 '27 with a 496HO for 15 years. A great boat. the 496 has been bullet proof. Mine runs 68mph. 29's have 525's in them which require top end overhauls at 300hrs and have problems with exhaust manifolds. I would not be crazy about owning a 15 year old blue motor. They are about 6 mph faster. For a couple or occasionally 2 couples the 27 is plenty.

ellwood 02-05-2020 12:41 PM

Welp, I'm still on the hunt. Have never been in a fountain so couple of questions......love the look... How is plane time? Cruising speed? How does it handle a nice chop? I boat on lake Erie and it can get messy quik. Anything else helps. Could even call....7168646285. love to know more about it. Thanks?

carcommander 02-05-2020 12:57 PM

I boat on a big fresh water lake. It gets a chop on it but nothing serious, 1' to 2'. If I boated on Lake Erie, I would want something bigger like a '38. Tabs down, it planes quickly and easily. Cruises at 40 under any lake conditions. I am the only one who like the speed. Lots of different GF's none of them like to go fast. Top end is bragging rights, but how often are you going to do it?

ellwood 02-05-2020 02:17 PM

True. So, the comfort level in the cockpit is pretty good with 4-5 people plus a small cooler? Beer, pop, etc....

unless you put the cooler in the cuddy it will be in the way in the cockpit especially a big cooler

the 27 has a pretty small cockpit. I have a 35. 4 is very comfortable. 6 is snug but doable. Coolers in the cabin. For Lake Erie you might want something bigger than a 27.

This is the overwhelming consensus from the guys that I spoke to before I bought my boat. I've only put about 30hrs on it so far but it's spot on.

Not trying to start an arguement but if you cannot locate a good Fountain you may want to keep an eye out for Velocity 280 or 290. Like Fountain, good looking and fast.

Fountains are built like anvils. I don't know about other brands.

this is more true than most want to believe. They are by no means a light boat. My 95 single step 35 weighs 92-9500 light and over 10k full of fuel. Just boat.

c0ncEpT 02-20-2020 10:04 AM

I have a 2004 27 w/ 496HO.

Boat rides nice for its size. Once you learn how to use the tabs and trim correctly it can really take some decent chop like most big lakes get on the weekends(I boat Lake St.Clair).

The boat is very easy to trailer and launch. You could use a medium size SUV or 1500 pick up with no issues at all.

The 496HO has been super reliable and very good on fuel. Basic oil changes and some sensor issues are about all I've encountered with it.

Now for the debate about 27 vs 29.

The cockpit is small on the 27. The 29's are a much larger boat in both the cockpit and cabin freeboard.

The 27 was only made with the small single step. The 29's got the larger single step sometime in a early 2000's I believe. That's why the 29 will run the same speed as the 27 with identical power.

The 27 only holds like 65 gallons of fuel. The 29 holds like 130 gallons.

My 27 runs 68mph in ideal conditions. Low fuel with a slight chop. Performance report says 72mph but I don't see how mine would ever run that.

The 29 is a better boat in just about every way IMO.

I ended up settling for the 27 solely because of price. An identical 29 sells for anywhere between 10-20k more than a 27.

I'm very happy with my boat and will likely make the jump to a twin step 35 a few years down the road.

Hope some of this helps!

CraneHillFast 02-27-2020 04:30 AM

Looks like a pretty nice one listed in Greenville NC. 2004. It’s on FB under fountain powerboat owners.

I have a 27. Owned one for 10 or so years. Great boat. There are definitely times I wished i had a 29, 32 or 35 but for 90% of the time that boat is a great size for the lake I am on.

Apologies if that came out wrong, I mean mine are long since sold. I loved every minute in both those boats and would own another in a heartbeat.
