42 question...
#1
I've been told that there are "procedures" to getting a stepped bottom Fountain to get on plane correctly. I have a chance to lake test a 97 42 Lightning w/ triple 502mag/415's and two steps. I thought maybe one of you guys could give me some tips about this boat before I splash it tomorrow. Also, what speed should I see with this power? The boat has a full cabin but no frig, A/C, gen or shore power.
Thanks for the help!

Use your tabs -- it's always easier on the drives. Also, slightly move the steering wheel from left to right (appx. 10 degrees) as you're coming up on plane -- This causes air to get under the steps bringing it on plane quicker and w/ less drag. Don't turn the wheel too much.
Also, on a triple, bring the outside two motors up w/ more rpm than the center -- then catch the center one up. I had a 2001 47 SC (500 EFI's), and although I always came up on plane slower than the guys who were more aggressive, I never had problems (drive or engine). That center motor works really hard and takes a beating. I sold it quick. Thank goodness I never sold my 38. Twins are soooo much easier and reliable!
Hope this helps!
