Best Friend in hospital

1 Attachment(s)
My best friend of 9 years in going under the knife today. His spleen is 80% constricted and is twisting the stoic as well. He is getting it taken out in order to save his life or he will pass in the next week.

Anyone that knows us knows how much our dog Dodge means to us. He is like our child since we have no children of our own. Since he was a pup he has gone to work with me almost everyday and any where we go. Almost everyone in our small town knows him.

Dodge was born with an irregular heart beat and was to be put to sleep at 8 weeks old by the breeder. My wife and I took him in thinking he would only have a life span of 2 years. Now more than 9 years latter every day is a blessing knowing he is here. He is in excellent shape but with his heart condition it is not a good thing to be put under anesthesia. That alone might kill him.

The operation will begin soon and all we can do is pray.

I am hoping it goes well, I will keep my fingers crossed I know first hand how much pets mean to a family. He was lucky that you and your wife have been there to give him a second chance.

Just got word from the Vet. I am the proud father of a 6 Lb 5oz baby spleen . He is out of surgery and doing well . There was no sign on any tumors. We just have to get through the next few days while he is in recovery.

Thanks for your prayers and wishes

That's ironic. Most people like your dogs better than you.

Just kidding Stecz. You set yourself up. But I'm just kidding. :drink:

HotBoat.
Congrats on the surgery. It must have been hard for you while you were waiting. I went through this last year with my Dog. (not the spleen but thought she had either gotten into poison or had something tangled in her stomach) went threw hell I was a wreak for about 2 months. trying to figure out what was wrong with her. My Nick was the best.

IV's then surgery said it was a string but the vet didn't produce it for me. I know everything you two are going through. but keep an eye on him after the surgery. I brought Nickie home after and she seemed really good for 2 days then she started acting like she did before. took her back and my vet said she just need a boast with everything she had gone threw he gave her a shot and sent me home with another shot to give her the next day 2 days later back again to the vets. I won't tell you the rest but you can only imagine... if you see something you don't like take him back to the vets and be right on top of what they are doing.
just make the house as calm as can be while he recovers and I wish you guys the best.
You should be ok my situation was different, but the same as far as how attached I was....

That's great news :D :D , I am glad I checked back to see if you heard anything.

A lot of you know that I lost both my Yorkies over this winter and it is driving me crazy not to have a dog :( Mr P doesn't want another one and I do. Well after reading your posts I went on the internet and looked for some Yorkie rescue sites and they have a few near me. Some that even sounded good for us. So I might start pushing this, wish me luck.

The only people who can't understand what a longtime pet means to a person has never had a pet.

A dog person myself. As a matter of fact, the house behind us now has a shepard pup that showed up this past week. I always make a point to go over to the fence and pet him everyday.

Glad to hear the update.

Sorry dude about not calling. But yes that is in your backyard from about two years ago during Americade. He has on his Harley Davidson bandana.

We went to the vet to see how he is doing. He looked better than I expected. And already want out for a walk. The Vet explained that his blood count should be around 60. Before surgery his count was a 29 (anemic) , after surgery he fell to a 15 (severely anemic). Now 8 hours after surgery he went back up to a 24. This is good progress but he needs to be higher.

I got to look at the spleen. They explained how it should look. This thing was huge, more than twice the normal size and twisted. Thank god there was no sign of any cancer :D

The bad news is, because of our budget I can’t afford 24 hour care. The Dr. Called and gave me a progress report but it was 8 pm and they were closing for the night. No one will be monitoring him for the next 12 hours. :( . Unfortunately this is a risk we knew ahead of time. All we can do is pray over night all will be well. We all feel confident that he will be fine.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm so very sorry to hear Dodge didn't make it. We recently lost a pet to a sudden heart attack and the loss is slowly healing. Know that you gave him the best life you could. His memory will live on. You are in our hearts and prayers in your time of loss.

God Bless.
Take care,
Vicki & Dan

OMG. I'm so sorry Paul.
Those work breed dogs are more like family than the average dog even.
I loved my Husky like a child.

I'm sure that your buddy appreciated the good life that you gave him.
You made a family for him here. He has just gone ahead to the next place to wait for you.
