I say build what you want and if you keep the costs controlled... maybe your chances of resale are better than somebody who "retailed out" with high dollar power.
I think that the drives would scare somebody more than power. After all.... my crappy OMCs are just SBCs with an obslolete drive system. Nothing wrong with the SBCs.
I would say go for it. Put hot rod motors in it if you want.... but use "good" drives.

I think your resale minght be lower but if you went aftermarket your initial investment should be lower.......
Lets say hypothetically that the boat cost 100,000 with out power. If you were to put the new 600sc and xr drive it would cost somewhere close to 58,00 retail. What could you put in yourself for 58,000? A good aftermarket drive, a 600 or 700 hp motor and still have some change? It still may be "worth" a little more to the average consumer or NADA with the big blue motor but you may save in initial costs more than the upgrade on NADA ever will be.
You cant look at your boat as an investment, you will never get anything close to what you put into it out of it. Just buy what you can afford and enjoy the crap out of it. I recommend getting as much motor as you can possibly swing so you aren't looking to upgrade so fast.

put in what you want, that is way more important than trying to guess what somebody else might want a couple of years from now... if merc motors give you peace of mind because most dealers have seen them before then go with it... if you have a good service guy that you trust go with whatever motor you want, he will be able to take care of it for you...

once a boat has enough hours on it so that it needs to ahve engines rebuilt anyways, people would rather have the boat wiht more horsepower than having a merc logo on it. my two cents

I'm not naive enough to think that I won't take a big hit on a new boat, this won't be my first. I'm just trying to minimize it, and consider all my options. I'm also realistic enough to know this that a 29 foot boat is not going to make me happy forever. Thanks for the help guys.
