Talking Finally made it to the dyno!!!

After months of research, planning and building, our new engine finally made it to the dyno last Saturday.

First of all I need to thank those involved and hopefully I don't forget anyone....man I don't even know where to start!!!

My wife for her endless patience and understanding of my boating disease


NVR Racing in Butler WI, Scott and Tom, who did all the machine work, final assembly, and dyno test. when I called Friday morning the shortblock wasn't even assembled yet and the heads were on the milling machine Friday night
But they pulled it off and we made some good power on the dyno on Saturday. (after we fixed my leaky Demon fuel line )


Rmbuilder took the time to listen to what I was after and spec'd a cam, lifters, and springs to suit my needs to a "T"

In the process of deciding exactly what to build I spoke with Bob Endress, Dustin Whipple, Tyler Crockett, Doug from Barry Grant, Ray at Raylar, and quite a few others in the industry who were more than happy to give me some insight into what works and what doesn't


so, what I ended up with is:

502 block bored .030 over to 4.5"
JE pistons, wrist pins, and rings.

Stock crank turned .10 .10
stock connecting rods resized with ARP bolts.
Balanced Rotating assembly

088 casting GM iron heads custom ported at NVR racing
with Manley 2.25 stainless intake and 1.9 inconel exhaust valves.
118 cc chambers
8.9:1 compression
ARP head bolts.
Gasket Specialties head gaskets

Custom Ground Cam Motion cam (spec'd by rmbuilder)
Intake .594 lift 228 degrees duration at .050
Exhaust .600 lift 232.7 degrees duration at .050
112.2 degrees lobe separation
Morel hydraulic roller lifters
Crane gold roller rockers

Edelbrock Victor Jr intake port matched to heads
Demon Mighty Marine 850 carb with #80 primary and #88 secondary jets. The only adjustment required on the carb AT ALL was idle speed!!! The jetting was right on the money!!

Modified Mercruiser magnetic trigger distributor
Crane Ignition box using their #6 advance curve with 14 degrees initial timing advancing to 34 degrees by 2500 RPM
Autolite AR135 spark plugs
Mercruiser plug wires .

The engine was dyno'd with dry exhaust turning the water pump
We originally used the Dyno's MSD 7 box then switched to the Crane ignition for the last two pulls and did not see ANY loss of power whatsoever.

I still can't get over how well this combination turned out

Great looking numbers especially in that sweet spot of 4400-4800RPM. Looks like you've got that motor set up to have the power/torque right where you want it!!! Way to go

Those are some great numbers !!! Makes me feel really good about the motors I am building. Almost identical to yours except massaged Edelbrock aluminum heads and fuel injection.
And to add to that a Whipplecharger at 6 psi.

I am hoping for 750 hp and from your numbers it looks like I'll be there or better.

That's one of the reasons I left the compression ratio where it is.. I had thought of adding a Vortech supercharger in the future.

Now after seeing how well it ran I think I'll leave it as-is for this boat....after all, the hull length is only 21 feet

Congrats----nice, flat torque curve! Also, those are some really respectable HP numbers---especially from a GM cast iron head!!! I also believe this shows that a good cam selection can really bring it all together very nicely in an engine combination.

That's alot of motor for that boat. You will be running well into the 80's knocking on the 90's. Be careful and make sure you have hydraulic steering on that bad boy !!!

I'll let you know what I end up with HP wise. I should be on the dyno in about 3 weeks.

I did install XS Performance dual ram full hydraulic steering while I had the engine out.

So now all I have to watch out for are your "Bigwavz"

your the guy I told about the steering right? nice job on motor I didnt do anything to mine slow winter for work couldnt afford it this year hopefully next
