Believe me, the hydraulic steering would be worth the money and you can probably sell the wife on it by saying it's a safety item. And it is.
SuperV (Wade) had it put on his 28 Challenger and would probably be happy to give you his opinion if you called him.

Those are probably Drew Marine Steering Stabilizers. I have one on my boat and it sure took a lot of the play out of my boat at higher speeds.
