motor bad again. Help!

I kneed help trying to figure out what motor to buy? 454
Or what to do with the old boat 1986 baja.
I went through the boat and fixed the rotted stringers from the transom to the bow. ( I planed on keeping it) I bought the new trs tranny upgraded for more hp.
After 2 new motors going bad spinning rods,I had it running for about 60 hrs so I thought I had a good lower end. So at the time the motor was out and doing the trans I thought I would buy new heads and a cam and intake.
Now I finally got it going in the lake and after the first trial and rechecking the timing, the motor started to knock...not spark knock.
that makes me angry. Now I kneed to figure out what to do.
I had new paint on the boat 2 years ago.
out drive rebuilt 2 years ago.
I don't want to have to keep pulling the motor out .
I want to enjoy the boat season.... Trade in with a knock?
I am sure I am not the only one this has happened to so I kneed good advice to help me out.
I am in Michigan near Detroit
Thanks tom.

Do you run an oil temp gauge? How big is the oil cooler?

Re: motor bad again. Help!

Did you put the remote cooler on youreself? You need to check and make sure you don't have the lines reversed. This is a more common problem than you might think. If the lower end let go with no hours on it then you have an assembly problem.... just re-read your original post. Did you buy this motor NEW or USED? Used and it's anyones guess what went wrong, that's just playing Russian Roulet. If it was NEW then you have an assembly problem or a bad component. If you do a solid rebuild on that lower end it'll be fine. You NEED an oil temp guage and you NEED a water pressure guage. If the oil gets too hot you're done!

Re: motor bad again. Help!

i had the motor built 2 times,
original motor and crank excreta.
so I kneed a water pressure not temp Gage, along with a oil temp Gage huh.
I did put my hand on the oil filter and I tell you it was probably over 180 mabey 240 or so 2 second touch hot.!!
what would cause high oil temp and hou do you keep low oil temp?

Bring Out Another Thousand .......again and again and again and again

el indio 06-05-2005 04:29 PM

Re: motor bad again. Help!

tolerances are too tight.that builds oil temp...........especially the mains...........

Where should I go or should I get a new crate motor or should I get one from 1800runsnew.com?
I wish I didn't ever mess with it.

I was warned by serveral different engine builders that the runsnew motors were truck blocks and not Merc long blocks. Try perfprotech.com, they claim to be Merc long blocks. They are GenVI motors, so I think you will need some other parts.

Lofty 06-05-2005 06:59 PM

Re: motor bad again. Help!

Have a marine engine builder build a motor. Lots of automotive guys think they know how to build "any" motor but marine engines are different. Remember, when your running in a boat it's like driving up a steep hill all day long at 4800rpm or whatever you cruise at. It's a tough environment for an engine.

And no, you need a water pressure AND temp guage alone with an oil pressure and temp guage, when they read out of the norm shut the thing off and figure out what went wrong.

There's a shop in town that has a 496 mag in there showroom with 40 hours for around 4500.00. That would be a smokin deal, he's a Powerquest dealer, I cant vouch for him personally but I saw the motor and it looked new sitting on the engine stand. Let me know and I can get you his phone number, a couple hundred for shipping and you'd have a nice set up. I believe all the closed cooling stuff was there, I can't remember if it had any accessories though.

I too am boating on a budget, 86 320 force baja, I am a mechanic and I bought my boat with no power, I was going to go all out and crazzy hp but I wanted reliability, did not want to work on the boat every weekend so I took a loan out and bought set of 8.1 HOs (496 HO ) I boat in tahoe and sea leval and didnt want to tune for every lake, verry reliable turn key engines. the BW 1017s didnt last long, moved engines forward 1 in. and went with Huber 1018s 925hp trannys, and now am dealing with trs issues. BBB, When you're ready to dump your TRS let me know. I've got Konrads that will bolt on and never break!

I also have a few take-off TRS's from conversions.

thanks lofty, I know about the big Ks but gota pay off the engines first, thats my next step

Re: motor bad again. Help!

Boating, if you can get the engine out and strip the accessories off, Lenny at Millenyum Marine in Harrison Township can fix it cheaper than anything suggested yet. He rebuilt my engines and is very fair about pricing.

What's the difference between Truck and Merc blocks (for the uninformed). I've heard mixed reviews on the 1800runsnew myself and am currious.
