Default motor bad again. Help!

I kneed help trying to figure out what motor to buy? 454
Or what to do with the old boat 1986 baja.
I went through the boat and fixed the rotted stringers from the transom to the bow. ( I planed on keeping it) I bought the new trs tranny upgraded for more hp.
After 2 new motors going bad spinning rods,I had it running for about 60 hrs so I thought I had a good lower end. So at the time the motor was out and doing the trans I thought I would buy new heads and a cam and intake.
Now I finally got it going in the lake and after the first trial and rechecking the timing, the motor started to knock...not spark knock.
that makes me angry. Now I kneed to figure out what to do.
I had new paint on the boat 2 years ago.
out drive rebuilt 2 years ago.
I don't want to have to keep pulling the motor out .
I want to enjoy the boat season.... Trade in with a knock?
I am sure I am not the only one this has happened to so I kneed good advice to help me out.
I am in Michigan near Detroit
Thanks tom.

Do you run an oil temp gauge? How big is the oil cooler?

Did you put the remote cooler on youreself? You need to check and make sure you don't have the lines reversed. This is a more common problem than you might think. If the lower end let go with no hours on it then you have an assembly problem.... just re-read your original post. Did you buy this motor NEW or USED? Used and it's anyones guess what went wrong, that's just playing Russian Roulet. If it was NEW then you have an assembly problem or a bad component. If you do a solid rebuild on that lower end it'll be fine. You NEED an oil temp guage and you NEED a water pressure guage. If the oil gets too hot you're done!
