What GPS Would You Buy
I have been watching the Garmin 182c for a long time and it has finally gotten in my price range. But after going on there web site I see a new 192c. The way I read the description it sounds like you don't need any of the extra software to use on coastal waters or inland lakes. Does anyone have one of these or do you know anything about them. The charts that I would buy for the 182 are $149. for coastal and $109. for lakes. Just need some advice here.
Thanks Mark |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have a 182C and like it but if I were to buy one now I would go with the 172C and save some money. It is $464.00 with an internal antenna from gpsdiscount

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have the Garmin 182C-delivered a boat from Homestead, Fl. to Norfolk, Va. and brought my 182C with necessary chips to navigate. It did a great job. :D

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Second vote for the 276C. A great GPS, portable, mountable, configurable for marine or highway use, color, etc. very versatile.

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
We have the 182c also..wish we bought it sooner

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Thanks for all the input, now I have another option to look at.
eMotiondriver, I think they all work or they would not be on the market. Next time you go to buy a car or a truck just get "One that works".... |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I am in the same position that you are in. 192c has the blue charts and accept chips for more detail areas. I was also told that there is less glare with the 192C.

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Mark I was trying to figure out if you needed the blue charts on the 192c. The way I read it sounds like they are already loaded in it. Which means I would have to spend 149 + 109. to do the same thing with the 182c. Or did I misunderstand what they were saying.

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
The 192C has the blue charts for coastal areas. Still need them if you do inland boating. The 182, 172 and 276 have basemaps only which are not very detailed.

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have been looking for a while, was going to go with Garmin but saw this thread http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...d.php?t=100264
and looked into alternatives, went with the Navman 5500, less than $550 to my door and I've got the $175 rebate coming back to me so for $375 I couldn't find anything comparable, I ordered it on monday morning and recieved it this afternoon(Wednesday). Will be installing it this weekend.I got mine from www.brokenlegdave.com Rebate is good til June 30th so don't wait too long. Caleb |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Hi Mark,
The Garmin's are nice, but so are the Navman units. I purchased the NavMan 5500 almost 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. The Navman screen is brighter and easier to read in the sun. Navman was purchased up by Brunswick about a year ago. Search the internet and find your best price. Print the screen and take it into a BoatUS store, they'll match the price. http://www.navman.com/marine/product...ion/index.html |

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I had the 182C and bought the 192C.
After using both, the only real differences are: the 192C has a MUCH bright screen. The 182C was tough to see in sunlight. The 192C has Blue charts built in for coastal areas. Other than that, they are about identical. I recommend the 192C - just because you CAN see it in sunlight. |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have the 182C, and love it!!!!! Can see it in any position and and has saved me once or twice from shallow water. Becareful the 176C & 192C have a different screen than the 182C look similar but in the open sunlight you cannot see them unless you are directly behind the unit, talked with Garmin and the 182C has a special screen that can be seen from any spot, in any condition, there was a term but way over my head, just know it works!!!!!!

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I just recently purchased the Humminbird 947c
It's a GPS, Chartplotter and Fishfinder in 3D. It also has a water temperature sensor, barometric pressure sensor, and the ability to plug in just about any electronic device you own. I don't do much fishing, but the 3D Sonar alone is awesone. Ever want to go find a sunken ship... well this thing is supposed to really pick them out. I will be doing some ship searching this weekend to verify. $1600 |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I'm another one of the Navman guys. I was surprised just how much I use this thing and can't believe how accurate it is. When I am in my dock it shows me "In my dock". I do have a C-Map+ chip and I have never seen a Blue Water chip but heard they are both pretty close.
With Navmans $175.00 rebate and the $488 price at Star Marine on the web it is very hard to pass up. Navman Deal $488.95 |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I just got my Navman 5500i as well. It goes in this weekend. I got the fuel flow kit for it as well. That was probably a bad move! :D

Can you flush mount the 5500i?

Mark, buy the 276c. That way I will have someone close that can explain (with demonstrations) how to use all of the features. I am not a techno-phobe, I am just illiterate. I use the basic functions but I haven't purchased any of the bluewater charts or learned how to set waypoints or plot a course.

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Any of them are fine, just as long as it's color. Whatever fits your dash best. Again, as long as it's color.

I have a new/unused 182(black/white) with ext antenna I need to get rid of. I paid $699 a couple of years ago. I'd probably take any reasonable offer.

NAVMAN. can't be beat.
I don't like the bluecharts. I find them cluttered, and if you choose "declutter" it takes too much info off the chart. I find the C-Map most similar to paper charts, which after years of navigating with paper charts is more familiar to me. This also makes it easier to use both. |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have the Garmin 176c, The biggest problem is that it has only two brightness levels and they are both too bright for nighttime. Ruins you night vision.
I believe the new model addreses this problem with infinate brightness adjustment. Would def. be a factor in my next purchase. |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
the navman has variable 10 level brightness and contrast.
|
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
I have used several brands over the years and the Garmin Blue Chart is by far my favorite. It is much better than the C-map.
Just buy color and get the blue chart and I'm sure you will be very pleased. We have both the 276C and the 2006C and they both do a very good job. |
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Dock, have you used the current C-Map NT+ cartography?

Re: What GPS Would You Buy
The 192 looks like a bigger unit?
|
Re: What GPS Would You Buy
Here's another good one--Standard Horizon. Uses C-Map charts and you can copy routes to a balnk chip from computer software and read the route on the Standard.
I replaced a Standard with a SIMRAD--nice goods but Standard is MUCH better. |

Does anybody know how the prices for the different chips compare from the C-map to the Blue chart.

2010C---step up, it's worth it. Shows all the pertinent info in letters as big as a 182!

I would love to step up to a large GPS like that but I am a little short on dash space so it would have to go on the deck :D
