Another Accident
Chain of Lakes northern Il. Lake Marie. 3pm today.
The driver (mid to upper 50 yro) and all passengers (3-5 teen aged to early 20's girls) were ejected from a 30 or so foot Donzi as it made a sudden left hand turn at around 60mph. Luckily, everyone escaped uninjured. The driver was not wearing the kill switch tether. The boat continued toward the shoreline hit a seawall and continued parallel to the shore. The boat went THRU 3 piers, a docked sailboat, and a shore station and ended up on top of a 4th pier with the motors still running. There were many people onshore who were also lucky to not have been harmed by this carelessness. I took many pics but i'm having a problem resizing them. Can someone help? |
Re: Another Accident
Upload the pictures to Yahoo photos (free), then edit the folder to public view. Then send us a link to the folder.
You can also download this tool from Microsoft if you are running XP. Go to this link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx then look down the right side for ImageResizer.exe. Download the file and run it. Works great. When you right click on a photo it will give you the option to resize the photo. |

Notice how busy the lake is. It was a miracle no one was injured.

WTF?? How stupid are these people? If I'm not in a long (15 min or more) idle zone, it's on me. This is a dark weekend for performance boating. Not only do we get tragic losses of lives, health & property, we also get the benefit of risisng insurance rates and a worse perception in the eyes of the public. Re: Another Accident
Another dumb-ass, people like that should not be able to purchase another power boat. Better suited to something like a Sunfish.
My lanyard is on whenever my boat is on plane...period. What's with the high speed turns anyway? |
Re: Another Accident
Another high-speed turn....WTF
Please slow down and don't trim in a stepped hull.. |
Re: Another Accident
Glad everyone is ok, interesting how the cap separated from the hull.
|
Re: Another Accident
what TRICK said.... might need a few strips of duct tape too...

You bring up a good point about the hull/deck seperation. Aren't those bonded on a 33ZX?? I wouldn't expect that from a boat that comes "out of the box" capable of low 80's, and with the Daytona package claimed 92mph Dumbazz - WEAR THE THETHER!!!!!!! |

Re: Another Accident
Wow! Glad to hear there were no injuries.
Wear your lanyards! |
Re: Another Accident
I had a Donzi and had it down to the shell, the hull/deck were bonded with screws and some glue. Not much there at all and many screws were stripped and were useless. I bet this was the side that ran down the sea wall and just wore it down to nothing. Can you imagine the horror of this guy watching his boat fly down the lake? The kill switch is there for a reason so use it or loose it...the boat that is, or worse.

Re: Another Accident
We where out there all day yesterday and luckily we didn't see this clown, Idiot's like this that make it harder for us boaters that just go out there to relax and have fun, Looks like that donzi isn't made that well, or is it just me.

Re: Another Accident
Certainly glad no one was hurt. That was one lucky boat owner. Could have been a thousand times worse.
Hope they throw the book at him in any way possible. |
Re: Another Accident
A shame, glad everyone was OK. I am sorta bummed so many people slammed this guy. Has everyone that slammed this guy always worn their lanyard? I don't mean "always" like now...I mean throughout their entire boating hobby. I wonder if any of you have ever gone at speed in a boat without your lanyard on? Not just limited to concept of lanyards, I think most of us have done things in their past that they now know is dangerous and have become better educated and safer. (wiser?) Can't we look at situations like this as a guy that did get lucky enough to become educated before something bad happened? One of the things I have always enjoyed about this site is I feel it greatly accelerates the learning curve and I will be the first to admit I have learned a ton of things and thazt OSO not only entertain me, dare I say it make me a better/safer boater. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Another Accident
since when are concrete seawall's stronger than fiberglass boats???

Re: Another Accident
I wear my lanyards whenever I'm running faster than say 35 mph or if I'm anticipating running faster than that. Or whenever I'm "offshore" in the Gulf. I admit I might be a little niave (spelling?) here but running 25 mph in the ICW I don't figure I'm going to get thrown out of the boat.
I agree with your comments Mike, but one has to take accountability for one's actions. The guy screwed up, bad. I've ridden with "others" who were not wearing their lanyards and I ALWAYS point that out to them and insist they put them on. I think this is one of the BIGGEST safety issues about high performance boating. Remember the xxxxxxxxxxxxx that ended up in the woods in a tree? A speeding boat with no driver is basically a missle looking to explode. There are some BASIC/COMMON SENSE rules that should be adhered too. Lanyards, I feel, are one of them. Or as my Father would have said, "Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it". Slowhand: there are times to be funny and times to be not. This is one of those "not" times....... |

Re: Another Accident
Putting on the lanyard should be second nature when you turn the keys..I dont think any of us are going to just cruise are boats at 35-40 when there are no restrictions. This is the thought I always have in the back of my mind. My boat headed to shore (people) and me ejected watching it unfold. TURN THE KEY- STRAP IT ON -THEN SHIFT. If you wait till later you'll get distracted and forget it.

Re: Another Accident
I always wear my lanyard when on a plane. Russ, remember, a freind of mine got killed two years ago running 30 mph because he didn't have his lanyard on.
|
Re: Another Accident
Holy Sht! That's unbelievable! Glad no one was hurt. The guy's a phucking idiot, should have worn the lanyard!
|
Re: Another Accident
This accident happened near the opening of a channel and on the weekends these lakes are among the busiest waterways in the world. It was EXTREMELY poor judgment to be driving at these speeds taking sharp turns in heavy weekend traffic. I wans't slamming the guy for not wearing his lanyard. I was only stating the obvious. It is also obvious that he should have been wearing his lanyard. This isn't the first time I have seen an accident like this out here and i'll admit, i'm guilty of not wearing the lanyard at all times. I do however wear it whenever I feel I should (ie. high speeds heavy traffic). After seeing ANOTHER accident like this I think I will be clipping the lanyard on after turning the keys.

Point respectfully taken. Will wear mine from now on WHENEVER I will be, or plan on being, on plane. Promise. Joe, very sorry about your friend. I did not know that. Russ |
