Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

There are two things in summer, boating and weather. If the weather is good you have to boat, otherwise you loose 1/12th of your weekends each time you miss, and the weather can change and be bad for a while, then you really wish you had boated instead of watching a movie and "cuddling" on the coach. I make no plans, this is how I was brought up, all we did was boat. I missed a few this year because i was dumb enough to think I could take a year off. People who have weddings in the summer do not boat.

yes, have a weekend long "function" this weekend

I can usually give up one maaaaybe two weekends per season but thats about it.

A few years back there were several family weddings that I didnt attend, when I was confronted about my lack of attendance, I told them straight up boating is more important. :drink: :evilb:

I went to the lake july 4th instead of a family reunion. Hell I know all the people at the reunion, and met new ones at the lake :D

I will go to those things except for the main three days we are always at the lake, memorial, labor day and july 4th.

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

The wife, family and friends know or are told, that summer & warm weather = boating on the weekends, due to limited amount of time available to do such given weather conditions, so boating comes first & foremost every weekend, everything else comes secondary.

They ( family & friends ) may not like it sometimes, but thats just the way it is. If they ( wife & kids ) want to go to a function other than boating, I tell them have it, go ahead, but I"m going boating ! :D

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

Mr P and I were married 15 yrs ago on 8/4 but it worked out great for our boating friends. Friday night started out with a big dock party at the marina where we used to keep our old Scarab. Saturday, the day of the wedding Ian and a bunch of his friends took all the male guests boating, we planned the wedding for 7 so the day could last longer. We had a friend's mother spend the night on our boat at Metro Beach so she could wake up at 6 before the park opened and secure the picnic area by the boats. I had several coolers packed with meat to barbeque in the trunk of the big white Lincoln we rented for the wedding. We delayed our honeymoon until December so not to interfer with the boating season. It took some planning by we still had the big traditional wedding, white dress, tux, 150 people etc, but we still got our boating in. For the last 14 anniversary weekends it seems like we are either in a poker run or boat rally this year will be no exception.

In some respects we are lucky since the family is small and most are out of town. Mr P and I are in complete agreement we say no to just about any request that would keep us from a boating weekend.

We just met someone this weekend that is selling his boat so he can spend more time coaching his sons baseball team  , we could not relate to that at all :D

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

Can't Stand them!! My family knows better than to have functions in the summer, but the Wife's family (who have nothing better to do with thier lives) like to have "TRIPLE F's" (Fukin Family Functions) throughout the summer. She only makes me go to a few of them (thanks God), and she attends a few by herself. So alot of times it's just me on the boat with my buddies.

Actually have one this Sunday at 12:00 noon. I'll be 1 hr away at a party on the boat saturday night (staying overnight). That means that i'll have to leave around 8:00am with a hangover to get us home and to the party by 12:00. BLOWS!!!

If it's raining I might go.

I however rarely go to weddings (I have gone to 6 in my life including mine and 3 siblings).
I get sick at the money spent on a one day event for something that statistically will be over soon....They can waste their money but I can't afford to waste my time.

Nice to see there are other people out there like me. Year after year I see less and less people I know on the water. There is always an excuse you know the married thing or the kid thing, wedding, birthday, reunion well you get my point and yes I,m single think I,ll stay that way. For everybody who is married and has kids it's a great institution. "Not that there is anything wrong with that"

Hope I covered my butt

Most of our friends from our earlier boating years have moved on to stuff like kids, swimming pools, and little league. That's why we really enjoy OSO, it has introduced us to a bunch of other selfish boater nuts just like us :D

I'm 25 and single, I boat every weekend, haven't missed one yet, if I do its probably weather related. May plan 1 or 2 trips a year, but a break is nice once in a while I guess.

Family and other functions always seem to interfere! My girlfriend is starting to be a big pain in the A$$ about me spending too much time boating. She better wake up quick or "I'm going to miss her!"

YES!!!!!!!!! They do get in the way! And causes friction in the family with those that do not boat! We get mad, bite our tongues, go a little cranky and just do what we have to do!!!!!

I do agree.........we do have such little time in Jersey for boating (weather permitting too) that any function that is on the weekends will give me addtional PMS moments!

Nope, I don't go to family functions if I want to go boating. Just last month I didn't go to my nephew's wedding because I went to the Jacksonville Poker Run. I knew my mom would be pissed, but I also knew she'd get over it.

My now "ex-girlfriend" had probably the biggest event of her life this past year. She is a professional dog handler and was showing 2 dogs in the Westminster Dog Show in NYC. She was gonna be on TV and it was over Valentine's Day weekend. The "outside world" says I should have gone.

WRONG !! I was in Miami for the Boat Show and parties and MY OSO FRIENDS. :D

Her career has her working nearly every weekend, I'm either racing, pleasure boating, or making arrangements to do one or the other.

I do love her, and I do miss her, but our priorities are different.

BINGO! My "non-boater friends" think I am strange because my life revolves around boating in the summer. A couple years ago my brother was in town and a bunch of us went boating on the 4th. We were suppose to cut out early and go to a family function. Well, we said f**k it and skipped it. Wow, was our family pissed. But, like soemone said, they got over it! :D

And I hear the friends moving on to kids, swimming pools and little league! I actually boat with people younger with no kids or older with older kids, but hardly anyone my age.

Funny thing is, I sold my Donzi to get a smaller, less expensive boat because I did miss good boating weekends because of family/friend functions. But this year I have been out on my new(smaller) boat more than the previous 2 years combined!

Glad to know I am not the only selfish one out there!!!

More like my family gets in the way of boating.
Bit off more than we can chew... boat, beach club, and pool club.
Going too many directions at a time.
Plus since the 9mo old cant really go out on the boat, we all would have to wait around for the nanny to start working at 2pm on saturday just to get started.

My wife is starting to get more into it... hoping to raft up w/ friends and stuff. Damn she called me an hour ago to see if I could leave work early so we can go out on the boat. Well, its a start. :drink:

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

Why in the hell would getting married or having kids stop anyone from boating? Why would anyone marry a non boater? Why would anyone not want to get their kids boating asap? My wife and I even chartered a 125 year old steam ship for our wedding. Grooms party showed up by boat. Got on a bigger boat. Had a few quick cocktails and then got hitched. Our daughter had her first boat ride at 4 weeks old. Shes hooked now at 8 yrs old and all she wants to do is boat. :)

So Doug, I guess some lame family function is what kept you from the Lake Of Bays poker run this weekend????????

By daughter was boating when she was 3 weeks old who was born in July. My son born in January was 4 months old before he got started. There is NO excuse for not getting out with one that old.

We lost a friend??? because she did not understand that boating was more important then going to a baby shower for her daughter-in-law.

Both of my brothers have lake houses and its just assumed they will not attend a week-end function of any type and its excused. Me on the other hand has nothing better to do than attend a great aunt's 52nd year of not smoking anniversary?

[QUOTE=Airpacker]Why in the hell would getting married or having kids stop anyone from boating? QUOTE]

It's more what the kids are into I think. Soccer games, little league, etc. I have a lot of friends that have their Saturdays taken up because of their kid's functions.

Plus, even if they can go when they are really young you can't go out all day unless you have the right boat. And I know I sure as hell don't have that type of boat! So, if I ever have kids I'll have to get a more "family-oriented" boa. :D

Man, do they ever. My little girl's birthday is the 3rd of July. Better having her than being at the lake but it is still in the back of my mind.

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

Thankfully I married a boater so weekends = boating. :D

Our first child was in the boat at 5 days old and has always been keen. Both kids (6 & 9) can't get enough.

Would agree that non-boaters just don't get it. We are gladly selfish about our boat time and just say no to events that would eat up precious summer weather. :drink:

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

I think more importantly that what this thread demonstrates is that boaters are an independent group, who aren't led around by bull**** from significant others or any immediate family. I believe to own a boat and use it you have to an independent thinking adventureous person. My wife doesn't even ask anymore, she assumes that i won't be going if it's a function in the summer. I skipped a wedding this Saturday of her first cousin, that isn't anywhere near close enough family relation for me to give up a boating day. They waved at me from the balcony of the reception as I screamed by on my boat. I am sure there were people at the wedding who didn't realte to why I wasn't there, but I don't have time to explain it to them. I think that when you tell people you went boating, all they think about is you went water skiing and tubing, they don't realize it's a whole additional family out there on the water that you enjoy spending time with. It is understood that from May till September, not to expect that I will be at any function on the land. All my boating cohorts, say " Ah you mean you are with your land family." Life should be about doing what makes you happy, you only live once. You should be the captain of your own ship, sail it anywhere you like. My wife and I give each other this latitude unselfishly, it really blows other peoples minds who are real clingy, constantly asking, Where is your wife?"

I could take the baby out for a slow ride, but to get up on plane and bounce around doesn't seem right. Also, I wouldnt go out for a long day with him in the sun.
I will be taking him out when we go for our family vacation, when we take short trips from pt. A to B in calm waters.

I was on my fathers boat as soon as summer came. But he had a 38 bertram that ran 16kts, not a 24ft 7ft beam that runs 40-50 cruise.

That , and combined with a limited time frame in the north , we're already limited to perhaps only 5 to 6 months X 8 weekend days is 40 to 48 opportunities. Now throw in a few rainy weekends  and we have to be crazy spending what we do on this habit :stupid:

I JUST DONT GO
My friends send us invatations but they know unless it is raining that I will not be there. The misses will go to some of them so I drop her off at the dock and pick her up later. I have friends who own boats and they will spend a Sat or a Sunday painting a wall or landscaping or go to family things, I straight up tell them they are nuts and that work can be done Monday through Friday evenings. Alot of our non boating friends all have young children and have b-day parties on Saturdays between 1 to 5 pm  so we dont go. My family does not even tell me about the functions anymore in the summer :D

Re: Do "family functions" get in the way of your boating????

This is only my 3rd summer of boating since meeting and marrying Rob. He was a boater 4 or 5 years before I met him. He made it very clear that no plans were to be made on the weekends the first summer we boated together.

I squeaked one or two in (and he grumbled the entire time) that first summer. Since then I have become so addicted to boating that I now tell my non-boating friends that unless it rains or snows, you won't see us.

We did attend 2 graduation parties in June. Fortunately for the first one the boat wasn't in yet and for the second one we got there 15 minutes before it started and barely stayed an hour so we could get on the water.

Our non-boating friends now understand. We are invited but they know most likely unless it rains they're not going to see us.
