Lake Tahoe ?
Whats boating like out there, how does it compare to loto etc.
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Boating good, large enough to really crank it up. Probably the most beautiful alpine lake in the US. Several public launch ramps and acouple crane drop in marinas.
Nevada side the best for coves and party areas. Water temps cold (all snow pack) but some areas warm enough to swim. Clear water 70ft visibility. Flat in am wind chop toward most afternoons. If you need more info let me know. Terry |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
How is the water level this year????
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
2 ft below high water mark. You'll need mufflers on the lake. They're enforcing hard! There are good spots both North and South Lake. The Hyatt at Incline Village has a floating bar that's pretty fun to roll up to. West shore has the Sunnyside, Garrwoods, and Chambers Landing. North Shore has a bunch of stops. Nude beaches are on the East Shore. The Keys at South Lake have their own sound ordinance but I don't know much about it. South Shore has a whole bunch of stops.
It's a fun lake to boat on, the water gets pretty big! It's no Loto but worth a trip. Just use extreme caution near the shore. The lake is so clear you can't tell if you have 40ft or 2ft under you. The lake is at 6200ft so jet down 4 sizes from sea level (rule of thumb) and get some smaller wheels. I run 30's at sea level and 26' at the lake. The Lake kicks up pretty good around 3 o'clock and sometimes doesn't settle till the next day so be prepared. My Fountain sits too low so I can't leave it on a buoy at night. That lake has claimed allot of boats at night. Have fun!!!! |

Some pics from the Sunnyside. It was calm so we left the Master Craft on the buoy against my better judgement.

These pics where taken in June so the weather was a little unpredictable. The squall is blowing over Incline Village but left us alone.

Normally a ski boat is unpracticle at this lake but this week the weather co-operated. It's a great lake for an offshore. My Fountain does great up there!
The week we took these pics it just never kicked up. |

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Hmm...I just logged on to post if anyone knew anything about Tahoe. I guess I found all the answers right here!
I just flew into Reno for business and thought I might drive over to the lake one afternoon. Thanks for the heads up! |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
If you're in Reno you have NO excuse for not driving up the pass to the lake! You sure as chit won't be dissapointed by what you see. You'll probaby want to go up I80 to Truckee then head over to the lake. If you end up in Tahoe City, head south down 89 to the West Shore. You'll find the Sunnyside down there. They have the BEST fish taco's north of Ensinada. When you go to the bar ask for a guy named Dana and tell him I sent you over and he'll take good care of you.
Enjoy! |

I kept my Sutphen there last summer. Very enjoyable. Great scenery. Serious boating enthusiasts there, too.
I saw 2 of my favorite allt-time boats...a 30 Windsrocraft and a 29 Kavalk. Then came along a 60' (or so) new Riva...Holy Chit! |

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
From Reno the quickest way to the lake is Mt Rose Hwy 431,just south of Reno on 395. It will take you to Incline Village where I keep my Scarab.
Lots of weekend warriors on the lake and lots of Classic Chris craft type boats. These guys get kind of stuck up,out on the water, just like the nose of their boats. I had one swerve in front of me last year and he almost was in 2 pieces(no brakes on a scarab). Ultimate launch is sand harbor at Incline, its the most beautiful boat launch in the world, crystal clear water, big pines and giant granite boulders make a natural harbor. Worth the trip! |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Lofty where do you live? I'm in San Mateo and my cabin is on Mt Rose!
You going up for Hot August Nights? Terry |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Terry, I'm ovder in the East Bay, Pleasant Hill-Lafayette border. I'll be skipping Hot August Nights this year. We trailered my GT40 up for it last year. What a blast!
I have to agree, Sand Harbor is a great place to launch. Is your Scarab orange yellow red? If so I talked to you when you where launching last June. I think you where having trouble getting one motor to light? |

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
The weekend warioirs at the lake are bad. I hate to admit it but I'm one too, I just try not to fit in with them.
The most common new boat on the lake is Cobalt. The locals all say Cobalt stands for "Can't Operate Boat At Lake Tahoe" :evilb: :evilb: :evilb: |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Tahoe is a beautiful place summer or winter. I'm from the East Coast and am amazed how undeveloped it is considering how close it is to San Francisco. If you're passing through Reno, you have to head up there.

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Tahoe has been perfect for the last week. Temps near 90 the last week with little wind in the afternoons. I keep my Fountain 35 Lightning on a bouy all summer at Edgewood Golf Course. It's the best place to be in the summer (my opinion).
I dropped the pitch on my props by 2. Works great for me. Don't have to re-jet with EFI's. |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
xxxsive,
Have you seen Lucas' new 42 Fountain yet? It's the one that's painted like a missle pop but has some snort'n 1500's in it. It ran pretty good down here but I know he's been having a hard time at the lake. |

prettiest lake I've ever seen!!!!
Fionn, left you a message yesterday....... |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Thanks for the info. I have been spring skiing out there the last couple of years, and the view from heavenly is incredible.
We are thinking about going out there late August without the boat. |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Steve, I passed your 411 over to the guy with the Bullet. I guess he hasn't called? I'll get on it.
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
xxxsive, that was his goal, to have the fastest boat on the lake. Last I heard it ran 129 at sea level.
Did Rick Bollens show up with Gone Again? I heard he broke again. |

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Great timing, I am going to be in Reno (close to there anyhow) for a week ata time on at least two occasions in the next month. Might have wife come out for a weekend. Are there any places to rent a boat (small bowrider type) to cruise around? 1/2 day on the lake would be cool.

I would recommend a morning rental. Tahoe can get very rough in the afternoons. Several tourist a year die in those small boats. |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Rough and COLD! You do need to be off the water by around 3pm this time of year. You don't want to be in the middle of that lake in a bow rider when it starts blowing. You can always shore hug but it kicks up so quickly that if you're in the middle you'll never make it to the shore.
Sierra Boat Works, Tahoe Boat Works and San Ramon Valley Marine (West Shore across from Sunnyside) all on the north end rent boats. |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Thanks for all the hints! I ended up meeting up with my girlfriends younger brother who works on the " Tahoe Queen" out of South Lake. We borrowed one of his buddys 19' wellcraft and cruised over to the cove that has the island in it! Man that lake is unbelievable! I hope I can get to some other spots in the future!

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Where can I get info on the Hot August Nights? Would love to go up for that.

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
If you don't have hotel reservations by now the nearest place will be Sacramento!

Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Lofty, I'm in Walnut Creek...
I heard Jim's 42 ran 112 at the lake. Shepdog |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Shepdog, you're right next door! I'm in Pleasant Hill.
112?!?!?! What a drag, for the kind of money and trouble in those mills you'de think it would do better than that at the lake. Are you in SF Offshore? |
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
For a starting number 112...not so bad. I'm sure by the end of the summer he will see more. As for SFO, I'm not a member, but I've been around POPRA for the last 15 years as one a rescue diver.
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Are you the one with the rescue Scarab?
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
Yes that is our team, but I do not own the 28 cig. I try and leave the boat at home when I go to the events.
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
I'm sure we've met, what boat is your?
|
Re: Lake Tahoe ?
You must know Paul Abru and Barry Garfinkle then?
