MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

I was wondering what people are doing about the noise restrictions on our waterways these days. I am curious to see what boat you have, engines, HP, and where you boat, etc...

I am serious about this...I have a friend that had his weekend ruined last weekend at Havasu because his boat wouldn't pass the decible meter test and he wasn't able to go boating

Please answer the following questions...
Boat
Engine(s)
Horsepower
Mufflers you are using (if any/ do you like them?)

Here's my info

Using Zoomers Marine mufflers....I love them!!!
I boat in the Pacific coastal waters and mostly Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Thanks OSO :D

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

I run GGB extremes on dry CMI headers and tails on my 540. They sound great and have no power loss.

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

89' 311 SR1, basic 454 mags, Eddie Marine Thunder aluminum exhaust. Removed silent thunder box and installed new Stainless Marine tips with "superflapper. All parts courtesy Trick Marine (shameless plug :D)

We don't have (fortunately) noise issues here, just the manatee issues.

Very seldom see an "offshore" or "performance" boat with mufflers here.

Not required, but I run GGB's by choice. Like Checkmate 454mag, my 540 is a little on the loud side.

I am also very happy with GGB and Trick Marine - excellent service in the getting them ordered and delivered.

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

22' Donzi Criterion. 502 BBC. Probably around 550 hp. No mufflers. In NJ, you are required to have some kind of muffling device, or u get a tkt. I take it easy around the marine police, and havent been bothered yet. That sound you hear is me knocking on wood.......

Have to because of state laws
however, I am not totally compliant because they are switchable :)

They really take the bark out, both open and closed.
Closed you can sit in the back seat and carry on a conversation.
Open, you can too, just talk a little louder but still able to :)

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

43 Black Thunder, TMP 750 HP, normally aspirated, CMI headers, CMI tails, wet @ the end with GGB Extream muffler tips. Much better than 4 1/2" Stainless marine Gen III thru transom dry until last inch. You can talk in normal tones until wind noise gets too loud. Joe Murray

28' Nordic with Whipplecharged 540/800HP running GGB mufflers. Mufflers are not required here, but I like a boat to sound good, but not incredibly loud. These seem to be just about right.

I purchased some HPI clamp-ons but I have never used them. I boated in Tahoe three weeks ago and just idled in on one motor and tried to be quiet around the docks. Pfaff 1000's, with Stelling big tube headers. My Jag is pretty quiet isn't it Lofty, You heard it on the Sacramento river, Bridge to bridge. Doug

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

We're not required to use them, but it's very annoying to have some one come blasting thru at 2:00 AM without mufflers.
Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of open exhaust and usually run like that offshore: just not in heavy populated areas. Besides, I think it's cool to have a relatively fast boat that is also quiet. Dave Scott/Barcardi has the right idea.

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

Have tested 20 sets of mufflers on dry and wet exhaust on 850-1150hp blower motors. There was no muffler that met the j-2005 regulations of 90 dbs. We even put up to 3 mufflers on the 1150's- 2 inserts and a clamp on, still only got it to 94dbs, with a total 42" of mufflers. The Turn downs work for the stationary test if you get them to clear drives and tie bar which is hard on Merc 6's.On the moving test the technology is not there yet . I have tested ggb's hpi's gibson, cmi, stellings.I believe the answer on big hp is a turn down inside the transom and exit below water level. have spoke with several racing teams and manufacturers and they agree.

GGB High Flow Louver tips

Don't have to have them but with my two young girls, it is easier on their ears. They work great and no loss of performance.

29 scarab single
around 500 HP
CMI Elbow w/wet tails

Haven't had a problem yet here in upstate NY. Knock on wood! She is pretty loud. The laws here are not clear on weather you can modify your exhaust such as silent choice or put custom systems on. It seems even some law enforcement are not clear either. I have heard of people getting noise tickets and when they go before the Judge the judge throws the ticket out depending on the circumstances.

So far we don't need them in Mississippi, Louisiana :D

We will see when we go to Emerald Beach poker run, but I think there not enforcing it there either.

But I can see it coming and will have to get them soon or later. When it first bust off with no water its loud.In thr boat the blower whine is louder that the exhaust :evilb:

Mufflers are going to suck

I have IMCO gatlin mufflers on my 2005 HP525EFI's. I would rather not have any mufflers, but I got them because of the law. I have no idea what dB I am at with these mufflers.

Yes...I have in-line GGBs on my twin stock 496HOs and did not experience any loss of speed. The boat is much quieter, but still has a great sound.

Re: MUFFLERS...are you using them or not?

I had to install mufflers to met new federal laws. The boat was already quiet enough at idle because the pipes turn down inside the transom and exit just below the waterline, just where the water enters the pipes anyway. It sounds like an old mahogany runabout idleing along but gets it voice back once on plane and the exhaust clears the water. Slightly modded hp500efi in an eliminator daytona.

KL, it's hit and miss. Jonas will know better but I've been hearing mixed things. Don't worry about it for the Big Cat. How could they possibly stop 150+ boats? Just don't be a straggler and you'll be fine!

No real mufflers but I use the silent choice (which I love) around locks and marinas religiously........I think by law your supposed to have a "muffling device" but Ive been beside several cop boats and they dont give me a hassle at all but Im always in quiet mode.......spoke to one cop about it he said......and I quote "personally Im ok with it" (open pipes) "but if the guys being a jackazz , like reving the hell out of it in a confined area, Im gonna do something about it"......sounds reasonable to me
