Hot Duck have you been running that 45' Apache this summer?

Hey bud,
Reading the Apache clasifieds just reminded me about that beautiful 45' you had and hadn't seen you around here much. Are you running your rig around the MD area? I'd like to see that thing in person some day ... soon  Roadtrip ??? :evilb: :drink:

Been to OCMD several times this summer, didn't see the Duck's 45 either! Didn't see much in performance boats at all in that area. We spend a lot of time at Seacret's and most everything is either jet drive or pontoon.

For what it matters, don't like Seacret's new venue, miss the island music on the beach!!! Not much of a crowd there this summer....

It's been a great summer weatherwise!!!!

Hot Duck 08-14-2005 02:25 AM

Re: Hot Duck have you been running that 45' Apache this summer?

East Coast B: I have to agree. I have not seen many performance oriented boats at all this year. Bill (my old racing partner) has been running his 39 Kryptonite a little and has had the Gladiator out two or three times, but that has been about it. Rob Asner has had his 41 Apache out a few times, but this summer has not been like years past for any of us.

I think that part of the problem is the hassle of getting in and out of the water lately. The one local marina with the fork lift and travel lift seems to be doing everything they can do to get rid of the performance boats. That is a long story in itself.

There is one local ramp that has deep water (located in west OC), but that has been so jammed packed this summer that you can't hardly get through the parking lot, much less have room to get a big boat in and out. Even if you do get it in the water, there is absolutely nowhere to park any more. The parking lot is full of jet ski and small run about trailers, most with out of state tags. The county claims to be "looking into the issue", but I have not heard anything as of yet. Maybe if they impose some kind of fee for people from other counties and states or for people with smaller boats, those people will go use some of the smaller ramps to avoid paying a fee. This would leave some room for bigger boats at the deep water ramp. Who knows what is is, but I hope they find an answer soon.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the tourists being here and bringing their boats and jet skis because my livelihood depends on tourism, but I wish that the people with smaller boats and jet skis (both locals and tourists) would use the smaller ramps around the area and leave the one deep water ramp for larger boats of all kinds. People with medium to large fishing boats are facing the same problems at this ramp no matter if they live here or if they are from somewhere else.

The only other alternative is to keep the boat in the water. Unfortunately I don't have the water depth for the Apache at my dock at home. I have been doing a lot of homework and have spent quite a bit if time on the phone and there is only one marina that I have found that will allow a lift to be installed. That is Harbor Island, but to own a slip there you have to be a resident. So, I lined up a resident willing to buy a slip and give me a life time lease to it with the rent amount set to cover the cost of the slip. Yea, well when we found a person in there willing to sell their slip they wanted $90,000!!! Believe it or not, that is evidently what the slips are going for in there. For that kind of money I might as well buy a smaller boat to run around here. None of the other marinas with deep water will allow a lift of any kind, not even a hydrohoist and not even with a long term lease! So, we are all kinda stuck this summer. Sorry for the bi*ch fest.

As for Seacrets, the reason that it is full of jet drives and pontoon boats is because there is not much water there, even at the end of the dock. They do have anchor buoys out in the bay and a tender to come out and get you, but even they are hard to get to without a really good tide. Getting to Seacrets by water is pretty much limited to jet skis, jet drives, pontoons and smaller outboard boats.

Spicy: I did hear a rumor late last year that Seacrets was for sale for an absolutely ridiculous amount of money, but I have not heard anything lately. Leighton has an absolute gold mine there in that restaurant/club. Even in different hands, I can't imagine tearing that down to build condos, but crazier things have happened. It seems that condo buildings are popping up like weeds around here. Every time you turn around there is another new building. The crazy thing is that most of them are selling for somewhere between 500,000 and a million dollars and they are selling out before construction even begins!

njgr8ful: You mentioned the word Apache! I better get in a reply before the fighting starts! :D Believe it or not, the Apache has not been in the water once all season. It is ready to go, but I have not had the time to run it. The way things are going around here this summer, it is an all day event just to go for a run in the boat. You either have to make an appointment for the travel lift or forklift a week out or you have to get to the ramp at daybreak just to get a parking spot. It looks like the poker run in Cambridge in September may be the first run of the summer for me. I am waiting for the papers to come in the mail so that we can get registered. You know, when I quit racing I thought that I would have all of this free time, but I honestly don't know where it went. We use to run the race boats at least once a week here in OC. I guess the difference was that I actually scheduled the trips and time for racing and made it happen. This is what I need to start doing. Like the run in Cambridge, I just need to put some days on the calendar and make them happen.

A truer statement couldnt have been made, even at pier 7 where I keep the Tiger, they have a short ramp and a long ramp. the short one is even a little steeper to help get the smaller boats off easier, but noooooooo, I have to wait for a pair of people, one in the water holding jet skis, while the other goes and parks then they come back and put on their wet suits. There is even a small beach next to the small ramp that they can beach immediatly and do all of that instead of holding up ramp traffic.

I agree, BUT, I keep my boat there, last thing I need is to come back the following weekend to gouges and vandalism to a custom painted tiger, I choose my battles and will educate them...one guy had a fountain parked there and pissed someone off, came back to see A-hole written down the side in permanent marker.

I spoke to Rob a few weeks ago and told me that he is going to start keeping his boat at home. The marina was keeping a handful of performance boats on racks on the floor of one of their storage buildings, but they have evidently kicked them out. They will still offer storage for them, but outside only. They said that they were tired of having to move the speed boats in order to get to boats on the racks above. But wait, the speed boats were paying for storage just like everybody else, right? It doesn't make sense. Rob said that if his boat is going to be outside, he might as well save the money spent on storage and keep it on the trailer at home. When he wants to us it he will just have to take it to the marina. I have to say that I agree. I was going to use them for the same in and out storage that Rob and the others have, but if the boat is gonna be outside, I might as well have it here at home and save the storage fees.

This is the same marina that I have been rounds with. They will handle my Apache only with the travel lift, not the fork lift. There is no doubt that the fork lift is big enough to handle my boat, but I think that they would rather hit me for the travel lift fees. They handled Rob's old Tiger with the fork lift with no problems. That was a full cabin 42 footer and we are only 3 feet longer with no cabin. All of our weight, including fuel tanks, is from the cockpit back. That forklift will handle it, no doubt. I even offered to buy the strap kit from their fork lift manufacturer to make them feel better about moving the Apache, but they don't seem to be interested. Not yet anyway, but I am still working on it.

After more than 5 months of calling and stopping by to leave messages, I finally got in touch with the top guy down there. Now I don't know if he was avoiding me or if he never got the messages, but either way I finally tracked him down and he agreed to get together and try the fork lift to see how it does. I also asked him about putting a lift in one of the slips (even just a hydrohoist) and he was absolutely against the idea just like everybody else there, even if I signed a long term lease. Anyhow, at least he agreed to try the forklift. He still seemed a little uptight about it, but I am gonna follow through to see what happens. I kinda think that he may have agreed to try it just to get me off his back. If it works, like I think it will, then we can use that to put the boat in and out from the trailer. This would be substantially cheaper than the travel lift. Now that the marlin tournament is over, I am gonna try to get down there this coming week to see what happens. I am hoping that this works because it is a really nice marina, it's only a few miles from home and that is also where we keep our center console. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Will (Hot Duck), I have a 63' dock that would look great with an Apache tied up to it! :D If you want, bring it up after labor day-if you have some free time. Barnegat bay is deep enough and its only a short ride to the Atlantic from here.
Hope all is going well with your business this year-sure has been hot enough!

That just sucks !...We have the same problem here. No Marinas will touch the bigger perf. boats so we all trailer. At least It's Fresh Water & we can dunk the trailers.IF there is room at the ramp ! Good luck with your plan ! Sure would like to get up there & see that 45 in person...Robs 41 also !

Spicy - I can address the SEACRETS rumor as Leighton Moore was with us last night at Dr. Berger's bachelor party at Trump Marina. Leighton and I talked specifically about the 'for - sale' rumors. Leighton said that SEACRETS is not actively for sale. However, he said that "if someone wins the Mega-Millions and offers me hundreds of millions of dollars, I will consider it".

So no condos for SEACRETS. An additional tidbit for you is that he is not going to deploy the old English's Diner. After running the numbers, it just isn't cost justified.

Hot Duck (Will) - Agreed - It's awfully strange that we paid full price to keep the Top Gun inside and now they've pushed Doc outside. I suspect some of the fisherman complained. I even heard one of them hollering at Tammy last year. This as his Detroit Diesels were belching out toxic fumes!

That is kinda what I figured about Seacrets. Everything is for sale for the right price! :D I went to the marina today to make an appointment to try our Apache on the forklift. We are gonna give it a shot Friday AM to see if it will work. Earlier in the summer they were kinda short with me, but they were actually nice as can be today. Maybe they were just stressed out about stuff earlier in the season. I saw Rob's Apache outside today and the Cigarette was outside next to it yesterday afternoon. Is Rob still planning to move his boat home or is he going to leave it there outside? I still don't know how they can charge for inside storage and then kick you guys out. I know that Dr. Berger must be a little upset about it as well.

I think the most drunk I ever was in my life was at Seacrets. I remember dancing with some woman that looked like Kathy Bates, the chick in misery...that night was misery. I wore my "Bar Hopping..OCMD" T-shirt on the boat the other day. It brought back some good memories, or lack there of. I can't remember the names of half the bars we went to the 4 years in a row we went, but it would be a shame if seacrets ever closed because I'm dying to go back.

Hey Bob! That would be great. Maybe Mandy and I can get up there for a weekend in late September or early October. Not only would it be great to run the boat, but I really want to sit down and catch up with you guys. Dennis called the other day and left a message, but I have not had the chance to call him yet. Every time I think about it, it is too late (just like right now). We had all intentions of getting up there to a race or two this summer, but it never happened. I really don't know where the summer went. I guess I just need to figure out a way to get tourists to come to the beach in the winter. Then I could take summers off! :D

Success! The fork lift handled the boat beautifully. I would say that 45' is just about all that this fork lift can handle, but it worked. I guess we are lucky that all of the weight is in the stern of the boat. With the forks reaching only to the front of the cockpit, it looked like it would fall at any second, but we pulled and pushed on it with the boat just an inch or two off the rack and it seemed to be stable.

We were hoping to get a run in on Friday, but the rain killed that idea so we are gonna try again tomorrow. I went over there today, went through everything and fired up the engines just to be sure that it is ready to go. I was kinda surprised. Each engine only turned over two or three times and then fired right up. I thought that they would be a little temperamental after sitting for so long, but they started, ran and idled like champs!

We should be able to get lots of use out of it now that it is right there at the marina. The staff there kinda beat around the bush for a while, but in the end they came through and everything seems to be working out.

I'll post some pics if we get out tomorrow. The forecast is calling for rain and thunderstorms, but they have been known to be wrong! :D

So THAT was the noise I heard on Saturday!!!!! I thought it was Rob! It did sound a little different than his 41, so now it makes sense. The head forklift operator Tim is a really nice guy, so I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm coming down Sunday to attend Dr. Berger's wedding. I'll be down all next week except Monday to come back and get my little 20' Cigarette, and I really will stop by your hotel and say hi.

I'm not sure if Rob moved his boat, I haven't talked to him since Key West.

Glad you have the old 'RDS Systems / Apache Kid" rolling again.

I don't know where it is now. The last I heard was that it was for sale, but I have not heard anything since then. That has been almost a year ago and I think that it was at TNT then, but I am not 100% sure. Maybe somebody can fill in the blanks for us.

Hey Barry, stop by any time.

Rob's boat is still at Sunset and I think that he is gonna leave it there until the end of the season. Like us, I imagine that he will take it home over the winter, but it is still there now. He was at the marina doing some odds and ends work to his boat when we came out of the water yesterday afternoon, so we got the chance to shoot the breeze and catch up a little bit.

We were out for most of the day yesterday and it was a perfect day. It wasn't too hot and there was just enough breeze to churn up some 3-4 footers offshore. It was a really nice cruising day, but unfortunately we were the only ones out there. I had a few people that work with us here at the hotel that have been itching for a ride all summer, so I loaded them up yesterday and made 6 or 7 trips to Bethany Beach and back throughout the day. It was a great day. Everybody that has been asking to go for a run got to go and the boat ran like a champ! I don't think that we ran any faster than 70-75 all day, but it was still a great time just cruising up and down the coast! That is the first time that I have spent a full day on the water here in OC since November! I think that I am going to like having the boat right there at Sunset! It really couldn't be any more convenient. :D

Re: Hot Duck have you been running that 45' Apache this summer?

We have actually used the boat quite a few times now! Having it right there at the marina is great! We were out yesterday with Rob (41 Apache) and the guy that bought his old boat (42 Tiger). We had a blast once again. The winds were blowing out of the NE making just enough of a swell and chop to make it fun. The bay was so jammed packed that you could have walked across from boat to boat without ever touching the water, but there were not many people offshore at all.

We made numerous runs up and down the coast together and had a great time. I just wish that I had taken a camera because I could have snapped a few nice pics. Rumor has it that there was a group here in OC from NJ that all ran down together for the day. I never saw them out running, but a few people told me that they were here. I guess that Seacrets sucked them in for the better part of the afternoon! :D
