When you require lighting to see where you are going on boats, then you can talk going faster. There's no comparison. But the facts support that night running is flat-out dangerous. And sometimes deadly. This isn't even debatable. What is debatable is how we can stop senseless deaths at night.
The CG requirements for lights is a joke. It wasn't designed for boats running higher speeds at night. It was design for driftwood and cruisers. The light needs to be seen for one mile in perfect conditions. 2 boats, head-on, running 45 mph, in the dark. How long is 1 mile on the clock? Now take out the fact that there are no brakes on the boats. How long?
In the case that opened this Pandora's box alcohol appears to be a contributing factor. However, and I will get bitten by this later, sober or drunk, atleast you need to see where you are going. At the very least it will reduce accidents.
If you can catch the Documentary on TLC about the Autobahn, watch and listen very carefully. They spend alot of time with a chopper pilot that does nothing else but take care of accidents on a road with no limits. Get back with me after you watch it.

You can not compair cars with boats, that is rediculous. Fred tries to do that because his boat never gets off the pavement!! 
It is easy to think that if we allow speed limits at night that the day time is soon to fallow. That is not the case at LOTO and many other lakes. If we do not do something then we will likely all have laws like we are fighting in NH.

I don't think anyone here is advocating federal legislation. The issue at SML and other congested locations is that lack of input by OSO and other performance boating groups can lead to onerous regulations, like the Lake Winnie deal.
They most likely will impose restrictions at SML. As they did at Lake Conroe http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistor...politan/3250032
Most in this area were suprised that it was only night time restrictions, as emotions were running very high over a senseless accident.
I am not advocating daytime limits or open water limits either. Just think that we should try and get our voice heard with a sensible suggestion.
