Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

How do these boats compare in ride quailty and speed? I am not concerned with appearance differences just the performance. Looking to power with about 1350 x2.

Re: Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

Skater is the best powerboat made period. There is a reason other companies sub Skater out to layup their "special project" boats because they know Skater is the best at what they do. If performance is what matters then there is nothing to decide on other than Skater.

They are both top shelf boats. You can't go wrong with either one, however, I bet you'll get the MTI in half the time. Skater seems to build em slow while MTI is popping them out.

i think the 40 skater woudl probably compare better to the 42 mti then the 39. either boat is awesome. personally i like the cockpit of the MTI's more and you can get a cabin, but i dont think you can go wrong with either. did you check out the 40 Rage?

Pick the boat before you decide on engines - CRC Boat just went 160 + mph with 800 carb Merc's - and 42 MTI - How fast did you want to go ???

MTI is fantastic, and I tell you what...Gary Stray's rigging is perfect.
Just look at who wins the races, rough and calm.
The ride in a 39 MTI is unreal!!
With that power though i would go with the 42PR

Re: Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

The 1350's are a done deal. I know it will be fast. I was not aware the 39 MTI has a cabin? Truth be told a cabin means nothing to me. I am most interested in which will be the best rough water boat. I expect top speeds to really close so that is not a factor. I really like the Skater for build quality and reputation. I love the MTI styling and the cockpit. It seems to me the offshore racers are drifting towards MTI's lately. Must be for reasons?

Calm water- MTI
Rough water - Skater

This is according to Johnny Tomlinson, and he should know.

Re: Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

FYI;

I have a 42PR on order that should be delivered within the next couple of weeks. I went with 1100 HP Sterlings and I expect speeds in excess of 160 MPH.

I recently visited the Skater factory while in Michigan, you will not meet a finer gentleman than Peter, but I still perfer the MTI over the Skater.

The only question is what engines and drives to buy. :D

Brad,
I don't always agree with this Ron P guy but here he is correct. I would also strongly suggest a call to Dave Scott. He owns a few of both flavors. Call if you need his number. SQ

Isn't MTI what you get when you don't want to be another Skater at a Poker run. The only step to go up after MTI is maybe a Platinum

Post #4 I believe partially answered your question. If your a racer who wants a new boat, chances are you won't be driving a Skater next season.

After visiting Peter's shop I'd take a Skater over almost any boat. Sure he's not the fastest but how many builders keep the boat in the mold for nearly a month. There is a lot to be said by low volume builders that take their time to make sure everthing is perfect.

How about resale, skater may produce 20 boat's per year, good for resale

mti is cooler & faster at least on the race circuit. skater is well built but somewhat dated especially the cockpit layout.
skater is second to none if you want a one off boat.

Quality is comparative. Styling to MTI. Speed to power ratio to MTI. Ease of driving to MTI. You would have to talk to Randy and Gary about speed with your motors but you shouls go in the 160's-170's with 1350's in a 39. I have just gone through this while looking for a new cat and we have decided to go with the MTI, either the 39 four seater or a 44 six seater. Skater makes a great boat, but as you stated, some of the top teams are moving to MTI and WINNING.

Brad, I'll take you for a ride in the new 40' Skater I'm building and I'll have Joe take you in his MTI (which is for sale) then you can judge for yourself. :D

Have you looked at NorTech?

Re: Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

Is the catamaran not faster with surface drives, Arneson, BPM etc. vs the number 6 merc? It is my understanding that one boat manufacture is a paint brush and bucket boat manufacture and one boat manufacture is a high tech composite manufacture.

Spine Tingler 08-28-2005 08:29 AM

Re: Which boat to buy, 40 Skater or 39 MTI?

Yea, you definitely should look at a NoTech as well. And yes, MTI's are built out of a composite that is both strong and light.

I would think that the above statement would just about answer the question.

If anyone would know it would be "JT".

I think that you should tour both plants to see how they are built. I have never been through the MTI plant but this spring I did tour the Skater boat building facility and it is the best that I`ve seen so far.

Either boat is phenominal. Getting back to the question asked I would get the 40 Skater over the 39 MTI. A 42 sit down or 44 MTI would be a better comparison.

I`ve been working on it regularly but it`s still progressing slowly. I`ve got the cabin looking pretty good now but have the cockpit and engine compartment pretty well stripped down. I have the floor out to have a look at the tanks and to clean up the wiring a little. I don`t have a digital camera and the last disc that I had made is difficult to lift images off of but I`ll give it another try.
