Default Cashier's check scam???

I got these 2 emails from the same guy regarding the Donzi I have for sale. He is 3 hours away so I thought, "np big deal, he can come and get it."
I just get a funny feeling, he has no questions about the boat but wants to know if a cashier's check is ok.

I told him it's fine as long as there is a local branch of his bank here so we can walk in and cash it. I'm not putting anything into my account, (I don't want to show a record of a fat deposit anyway)

Here they are: (name deleted incase he shows up to buy it, (yeah, right)

Hello Seller,
I inquire about the boat you posted for sale.
Hope it is still available for Sale.
I am based in Seattle, WA as we just moved into
our new home.
I ask that you, inform me of price you would be
willing to
have It sold? Please get back to us soon.

Thank you.

3 hours after my reply with tons of boat info I get another:

Hello Evan,
Thanks for the compliments.I am ok with the clear
confirmation and
acknowledgement
of this purchase.
I would how ever make arrangement for the pickup
as soon as payment
arrangement is
settled.
Hope a Cashier Check payment would be find by
you.
May I ask that, you Please Acknowledge Ownership
of this (Item) to me .A
Written Acknowledgement that, what I am buying is
legit OR That it really
belongs To you would do.

Do get back to me soon.
....

I have bought and sold plenty online, (cars, Boats, motors, and on and on) I never had the same feeling as I do on this one.

I'll keep ya'll posted, here is my reply

Hi XXXX,

I am the owner of the Donzi X18, however Oregon
Title
is in my wife's name.

I have a friendly agent of the Oregon State
Marine
Board at my local Marina and can contact them
this
week about transferring title to you, or we can
both
do that in person while you are here to your
satisfaction.

Does this note provide you the satisfaction that
you
are requesting as to ownership?

You can send a Cashier's check for a deposit or
the
entire amount, or, if you are coming down in the
next
few days, bring Cash or a check with you for the
full
amount.

Or if your bank has a local branch, we can do a
cash
transaction in the security of your bank
building, as
long as every one feels safe and secure.

If using a check, even a cashier's check, we will
need
to meet during banking hours and I can only
accept a
check drawn on a major bank with a local branch
that
we can both go to and cash. I will not be
depositiong
any checks into my account.

As we talk a bit on the phone and email further
I'm
sure we will establish a nice comfort level that
will
allow this transaction to progress smoothly.

You can continue to email me or call, xxx xxx xxxx
When would you like to pick the boat up?

Would you like to send a deposit to hold the
transaction?
I can send a bill of sale with balance due on
receipt
of your funds.

Thanks
Evan

Maybe I'm just freaking with all the cashiers check scams going on, but I'm betting dollars to donuts I never hear back from this guy

Evan

My boat is on the West Coast.
Rare Donzi X18, rarer, Mercruiser Chevy 350 TRS drive w Tilt and trim, Rarest, Factory starboard drive.

Many motor upgrades, spent $$$ bucks Very nice original condition, I can email more if interested.
One X18 just sold in FL w an asking price of $12,500 with new Gelcoat and not as nice a motor and Volvo/no trim.

I've priced this one at $9500 to offset shipping to the east coast and for a quick sale.
I'll deliver free to most of the West Coast.

I just got a '24 Cigarette/Banana Resto project that finally came available that I've been waiting forever on

I was thinking today I need a new motor pic, this is the old one and I need a before and after with the new Carb, intake, distributer, plug wires and coil, that look so much cleaner and brighter.

to which I replied:

Hi Jack,

Which Bank will the check be from?
I will need to cash this check at a local branch of your bank in Portland as I will not deposit it in my account for tax purposes.

When would you like to pick up the boat?

Thanks
Evan

Sounds like a scam... Sounds like they have a foreign accent in their writing.
There was a post a while back about this. The check was for a larger amount and the buyer said to give him the difference after he deposited into his account. Trouble was, the cashiers check was no good and by the time the bank realized it, the scammer was already long gone. The bank told the seller tough luck.

Be careful.
