WHY ARE BOTH "WORLDS" THE SAME WEEKEND?

I really don't want to start a big mud slingin', but can someone explain why OSS and SBI/APBA have their Worlds on the same weekend. As a fan, I would attend both events if I could, and I can't help but think some of the racers would as well. Why should we have to chose?

Which is EXACTLY why, after eight years I've completely backed away from racing. In 2003 I volunteered over six hundred hours in helping out with the two races in Sarasota that year. Helping out with the "second" race is where I got my first hand experience of just how dirty the politics of offshore racing can get and it turned me off. Don't have the time, patience, or termperment to deal with what I personally watched happen.

Walked away and never looked back. There will be ONE unifed sanctioning body before I donate a minute of my time again.

I appreciate all the effort that all the rest of you give to try to keep offshore racing alive, not for myself, but for the fans that truely enjoy it.

I'm not a racer so I don't feel qualified to offer any real opinions. I just know what I like, and don't like. And I DON"T like what's going on in offshore racing. Maybe someday they'll get it together and do what's right for the sport, not somebody's ego.

Without getting into the details - Both groups were scheduled to race in Key West together. Plans made, dates set, everyone happy.

A few months back, SBI decided to un-invited OSS to attend Key West, leaving OSS to try and find a place to hold thier own event. Since the schedules were set, they didn't change the dates, just the location.

Please be clear about one thing - OSS wanted to race in Key West with APBA/SBI.

See ya in St Pete.

And the beat goes on.............

Ready...... shoot....... aim

This die was cast when APBA and SB(I) (R) merged......

Tit for Tat..... has, unfortunately, become the basis for just about everything in the sport today.

The goal here is to pit the better fleet (OSS) against the better venue (Key West)..... and see who "wins".

Each side is banking that they've got the juice.

Bottom line........under the best of circumstances..... the dwindling offshore fleet is split in half...yet again.

And that ain't good.

Remember "A house divided......................etc."

And then they wonder why companies don't want to spend big bucks on sponsorhip... My company, at my request, sponsored a boat one year and we won't do it again because there was no return on investment. We take responsibility in the fact that we could have done more on our end but, oh well.

It has to be run like a business, not some egotistical game! Probably the reason I don't attend to many races anymore.

All of the above is what I was afraid of, I was just naively hoping that there was a good reason. It would make way to much sense to have the races on different weekends.

Formula Outlaw says it all in post 10. He's one of the smart ones.
But its hard to stay away from an addiction.

1 of the sanctioning bodies doesnt care about the good of the sport or the racers. Only their check book. you figure out who that is.

Eventually, everyone's wishes will come true. Be patient

Good things come to those who wait :D

WHY two races at the same time ?.

Wasn't WHY both the same weekend answered? Half answered, sorry I can't read minds so I don't know what people are thinking when they make a decision, I only know the outcome of the decision and it's effects.

Why the univite? Ask JC, all I know is that OSS was told to take Key West off their schedule or face a lawsuit from SBI.

What I find puzzling is last year, a big deal was made about the Conch Republic Powerboating Association stepping in to smooth out all the BS and bring a single Worlds to Key West.

So I called Bill Spotswood, the President of CRPA and asked what he thought about OSS being uninvited to Key West. He said, as long as SBI fulfills it's contract to bring 70 boats to Key West in November, we don't care what boats attend as long as there are 70 or more of them. Funny, last year he seemed to care. PS - Anyone got a web site for CRPA or the name of anyone else that's a member?

My point is that the good people of Key West should be PISSED OFF. 30+ big budget teams and some fans will be leaving their money in St Pete rather than in Key West.

So who does this benefit????????? I guess somehow, SBI benefits from having less aggravation and less sharing of the spotlight. Who looses??? Everyone else.

I'm going to St Pete to cover the OSS races, but I'm not happy about it. Hey its still FLA in November, and from where I'm sitting in NJ, that's still real appealing.

I'm sure you'll all have fun in Key West, how could you not. It just won't be the same as last year. You might as well go to Deerfield this weekend, it will be the same boats.

Hopefully Bruce is right and next year will be better. Something has got to change.

There are great things happening in this sport and some of those will not happen quickly or without forethought. But the landscape may look significantly different next year and those involved are definitely thinking "How will this benefit the sport?" first and foremost.

Man I can't tell you how much I hope you're right. At the 2003 Sarasota Offshore Showdown which brought APBA back to Sarasota after three years, I was the "Course Captain", Chair of the Tow, Patrol,Turn Boat Committee and Co-Chair of the Driver/Sponsor Party. For eight days before the race until the races were over I had to take the time away from work to put everything in order. I will NEVER forget the feeling of accomplishment when after the awards, I went out to the dock by myself, drank two ice cold beers, and just thought of what we'd just done, pulled off a race in 91 days and put the best race on ever, in Sarasota, from the spectator's perspective.

I'd like to feel that again.

But only when all the crap gets straightened out and the back stabbing jealous egos are gone. One, in particular, in this area but no names will be mentioned.

That individual knows who I'm talking about.

Re: WHY ARE BOTH "WORLDS" THE SAME WEEKEND?

Ron,

Few questions:

1)In '04, why did OSS recieve TDC money when they didnt fulfill their end of the contract? A:Because JC thought it was the right thing to do for the betterment of the sport

2)Why dont you, being the big time Offshore Editor that you are, contact JC himself and ask him these same questions that you are instructing everyone else to and you seem to be able to contact everyone else but him? hell I'm a peon racer and I know the truth A: I dont have a clue to your logic

3)As reported in other posts, Bacardi Silver, (arguably the most recognizable boat in offshore today) is running in KW this year; Why?
A:your the UNBIASED(hehe) reporter, do your homework

4)When the 3 sanctioning bodies agreed to run KW together in '04, one stipulation was that they honor each others banishments from their individual associations. Why was one particular racer allowed to race when he was banned from one of the bodies? A: Because JC thought it was for the betterment of racing

Please Ron you are a good man and I respect you, but please do me a favor quit trying to protray that SBI/APBA and John are evil and they are the villians. We as a whole(all offshore racers) are the villians because we keep screwing the fans.

A little disclaimer, above stated is facts, not intended to bash or anything of the sort. Yes I am a SBI/APBA racer due to the fact that they are the only major circuit that offers the F1 class. If others offered it also I would race anywhere, anytime, against anyone.

Just for the record, that answer is simple and I thought had been made very clear to everyone in the past - this team races when and where my sponsor wants us to race. As the premier sponsor in any sport, their venue decisions are based on marketing goals and not sanctioning body politics.

I've heard an OSS members side of the story, which was very convincing. Now I wonder why J. Carbonnell doesn't try to explain his side of the story. It is unfortunate that they all can't be in Key West.

Hi Marc,

Since Deerfield is an SBI/APBA race and the OSS race in Corpus Christi Tx is the following week, I highly doubt that any OSS boats will show in Deerfield. Just a guess, time will tell.
