Camden race from one of the SOB's
My name is Brandon and i was was in one of the SOB boats, the yellow 21 Superboat. I just wanted to thank everyone who made my first offshore race an experience i'll never forget and i can't wait to do it again! :D Everyone there was super nice and was willing to do anything to help. I esepecially want to thank Team Lightning Jack they were very helpful and supportive as well as Team Intimidator (my fellow SOB). And of course AMF for putting this whole thing together. There were also many other people who helped me a great deal who i am very thankful for. I had an awesome time i just hope next year we get some more SOB's to show up in order to have our own class. See ya next year everyone!

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Brandon,
We were watching from the deck of the battleship... you looked great out there... it looked like you had your hands full with the steering and the wakes as you passed by - your arms must have been killing ya at the end. You hung it out and looked impressive. Hope you're back next year with more sob's. |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Brandon & Herb,
I would like to personally Thank You both for coming to Camden and supporting the SOB Racing class. It was nice to see still supporting this great class. Hope to see you both out there next year. DPT :drink: :drink: :drink: |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Thanks guys. My arms were toast by the 5th lap lol My boat with the motor it had on it ( a stock 200 merc) only does about 68-70 in ideal conditions. once i got into my groove on the course i was uptaining speeds of 60-65mph as the norm. I knew from the beggining i wasnt going to win or even come close with my boat setup the way it was. I just wanted to go out there and give it a shot and have some fun, which i did. And now im hooked and can't wait till next year. I'll be back with a 300 Merc on the boat hopefully i'll be some what competitive with that, and hopefully we get some SOB's to show up next time. Also i just wanted to say that Herb did an amazing job out there. His boat is super fast and he knows how to drive it. I'm sure he suprised some of the big boats out there.

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
I second that and told Herb himself at the awards ceremony how impressed I was hanging in the lead pack with the bigger boats with bigger power. Now that you guys are racers, over the winter visit the Racers Milling Area on this board often to learn about what OPA/AMF has going on with meetings, awards parties and so forth. Please spread the word on Long Island about the great time you guys had and try to encourage more of those guys to come out and play as well.
Thanks Again, DPT :drink: :drink: :drink: |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Hats off to you and your girlfriend Brandon!

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Thanks guys! JnT, first thing she said once i came off plane at the end of the race was, "I'm never getting in this boat again, buy a bigger boat!" but once she settled down she was saying that she had a great time and would love to do it again.

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Brandon,
It was nice meeting you-I sat across from you at the Sat meeting. My first race was in a 21 checkmate, so I can relate to the pounding one takes. I viewed from the Battleship and heard alot of people talking and complimenting the SOB's. Drag a few of the SOB's from Long Island to come out and play next year!!! :D Send me an E-mail with your address-I've got some pics for you. Oh yea-Welcome to OSO! Bob G |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
You guys put on a great show. It looked like you had all you could handle. All I could think is Bigger trim tabs. Congrats on your first race. :D

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Don't be suprized if a photo of you and your girlfriend in the pits doesn't show up the Extreme Boats Magazine article. It's a nice photo.
Glad to have you running with OPA. The SOB class would be great with a few more boats. But actually, in P5, Herb was very competitive. Make sure you go to www.oparacing.com and sign up for the email alerts so you get info about all future OPA events and races. Welcome aboard. |

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
It was very hard for me to be competitive with only a 200 merc on my boat. but next year i'll have a 300 so we'll see what happens

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Brandon,
Excellent job!!! With you and Herb out there this weekend, I think you guys finally have some people thinking! :drink: This may have been just what it needed to take. Someone had to test the waters, and I am glad both you and Herb kept your word and came out to race. With the affordability of a 21 footer and now a FREE Racing season coming up next year, there is no easier way to get a chance to go Offshore Racing. I'm looking at the bright side. We doubled the SOB count since last year's Cambridge race! :drink: I hope for next year people now will come out and join the fun! Brandon, There are 20 photos of your boat in the race over on my website. I have now divided the photos up by each class to make it easier to follow on how the race transpired. Check them out: Photo Links on my website. |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Sharkey Thanks, Herb was really somethin out there. I'm doin a few things to my boat over winter to hopefully make it perform a little better in rough water. First thing i'm doing is taking that little 200 off because i cant even reach the speed restricion with it. I'm going to put a 300 promax on with minimal setback and perhaps some Trim Tabs maybe Mercury racing 300's. I really hope that we get some SOB's out there next year and have our own class. Are there meetings i should attend to maybe support the SOB class? Thanks again Shakey

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Brandon,
I would hope that a meeting or two would come out of this. Especially if the SOB's do produce a number of boats to support their own class. Decisions should be made for the class as far as rules if the average speed is not used. There were some suggestions if they were not to have a max speed for the class, to possibly limit the engines up to a 2.5s. With the speed bracket, everyone can run what they brung. So, with no speed restriction, you sort of alienate the 300X owners. :( But I feel it is best to get anyone that has interest in the class together to find out what the racer's want. We have done this in the past, and the only thing I think that we weren't able to provide was FREE RACING. As you know, that has been resolved thanks to John Haggin of the AMF Offhsore Racing Team. So even though we had two boats for the Class in Camden, it seems to have gotten some great feedback. Afterall, look at the amount of people that have come out in support of you and Herb on this board and SnF. This could be a great start of something good! :drink: |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Well i hope we can have some meetings about this soon. I think the 2.5 would be a good choice. But it seems most guys are running the 300's now. What rules did they use for the class back in the day "A" class?
|
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Also did anybody video tape the race? if so how can i get a copy?
|

Figure out if the 2.5 can be competitive to a 300X or will they get blown away. The water kicks up and can sometimes level the playing field. The A-Class was Pre-Internet popularity. May have to find someone that may have the old paperwork laying around in their offshore chest..... :drink: Billy Frenz may even have it! |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
I don't think so. I got some video on my website but it was towards the end of the P-1,2&3 Class.
I didn't know how much memory I was going to burn up with it, so I only got stills of the 1st race. |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Sharkey Do I understand you correctly, in 2006 the OPA races will have no fee? Hence Free? Is AMF stepping up to support the complete season? Wow, that would be great I would except more boats especially in the smaller classes. Camden indicated as much. I counted 20 or more boats in the first start

You can confirm with OPA 732-920-3945. But that was the impression I walked away with.... |
Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
The NPBA 'A' Class became the APBA Sportsman 'A' Class .As has been mentioned before, the allowance of single big block inboards basically pushed out all the single outboards. When US Offshore was formed the single outboard class was resurected and called Factory 'F'.The 21-22ft boats were allowed a stock 2.5 or a modified 200....while the 24ft boats were allowed to run a 300 if I remember correctly.Eventually, a stock 454 inboard boat was allowed in 'F' Class. The outboards would do very well most of the time, but in the rougher ocean races the inboards would dominate. At its peak in 1994 there were 12 boats in class. The class was discontinued in 1995 in an effort to streamline the classes and have racers move up.Anyway....in an effort to keep the costs and speeds down in the "entry level" range; a maximum of 2.5 would seem to be the way to go.What does everyone else think?

Re: Camden race from one of the SOB's
Here is a suggestion. for the guys that run the 300X's next year if they are running away from everyone change there engine height or add weight to them to slow them down. I would look to use a 2.4 or 2.5 Merc Offshore Race motor. While the 2.5 may no longer be available after this year I am told you could still piece one together through Mercury. I would try to limit the guys with 300X's as I feel it is a wrong direction to an affordable class. The idea would be to get as many out there next year for minimal $$$$$'s.
Sorry just had to add my .02 cents. |
