Drive stand project.
3 Attachment(s)
A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of speedmaster 3As for my top gun project. Along with the drives I picked up the need for a couple of stands. After reviewing my requirements and doing a couple of rough sketches, this is the design that I came up with. I still need to put on a couple of finnishing touches on the first one before it is ready for paint but the first test fitting went very well. I thought that I would share some of the pictures that I took along the way.

Re: Drive stand project.
Why dont you just go with the bare metal look. I kinda like the raw finish better than paint.
|
Re: Drive stand project.
looks good ....now start polishing them.

I do too Jason but if I don`t paint them, I will have the rusty drive stand look before too long. :( |

Re: Drive stand project.
Wow, nice work. I was thinking about starting a thread ealier today about drive stands to get some ideas. I want something that doesnt take up much space, and can easily move around smaller drives like X's and XR's and the occasional Alpha.
|
Re: Drive stand project.
Well. In that case. Paint away. LOL
|
Re: Drive stand project.
Awesome....Good Work!

Re: Drive stand project.
Nice work Roger. Those look like they will suport the weight of the Top Gun, not just the drives!
Team Baja, I'll try to get a few pics of the drive stand I made out of 2" PVC for a Bravo drive. |
Re: Drive stand project.
clean welds....
|
Re: Drive stand project.
Payton I would like to see your stands I cant weld but I can glue. :D
|
Re: Drive stand project.
Wow, I just build mine out of 2x4's & a piece of plywood.

Nice though..from the looks of your shop you must do alot of fab work. |
Re: Drive stand project.
what about powder coat? I know its more $$$ but much harder to scratch.
|
Re: Drive stand project.
I was going to ask if that was aluminum. Not that I know much but I'm told the ability to weld aluminum makes you a stud...

Re: Drive stand project.
Thanks for the compliments guys. I have a tendency to over engineer and overbuild. In a situation like this where weight is`nt a concern, this philosopy has tended to serve me well. The extra weight, in this case makes for a more stable platform so the stand can be used for doing some work on the drive as opposed to just holding it...or in some examples that I`ve seen, just barley holding it. One of the objectives that I wanted to acheive, was a low center of gravity. That is why the stand is open at the rear to allow the skeg enter the stand. This open end, and resulting loss of strength on that end, will partially explain why I used heavier tubing with additional reinforcements in its construction.
I`ll post more pictures when I get them painted and the wooden top installed. Thanks again for the kind words. Roger |

I made a drive stand out of an engine stand after I saw the one that US1 Fountain made. Here is a link to pictures of his stand that I copied.
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...ht=drive+stand Here is a picture of my stand. My drives are really that high and I can slide them right in by adjusting the heigth on the tongh jack as neeeded. |
Re: Drive stand project.

Anyone need a custom stand to work on drives? this one I have lets you bolt the upper or lower to a plate and the handle has a 21:1 ratio gearbox to let you roll it 360 deg. and strong enough to work on drive. No clamping on the cav plate. Also an adapter for holding a BW trans to work on it. $200.
an sorry for any threadjacking here. thought of it while looking a yours. Ken |

Re: Drive stand project.
Joe , I'm not sure who made it but when I bought a set of trs tools this came with it. the mechanic said it was custom made for all drives and he even held trannies on it. I know he did not build it. It sure works well. I dont need it anymore and can't figure out another good use for it
ROGER , very nice. I would beg for a pair but would rather sell my drives that store them. Ken |
Re: Drive stand project.
Those stands look nice, now get back to working on that boat. I want to see it on the water before my son goes to college. Sorry, couldn't resist. Have a great weekend.

Re: Drive stand project.
Wow those are nice but man thats alot of work for something that gets covered with grease and overspray.. I made one in less than an hour out of 2x4's that ive been using for 5 years now .. The top has a slot you can sit the skeg in or flip it over and has a larger hole for the upper to sit in ..
Ill get a pic later it was easy to make and has been used to rebuilt and paint a variety of different lowers :) |
