Inside Outerlimits
2 Attachment(s)
After all the comments from the people who were in Key West that got a glimpse of the new 47 ft Outerlimits Super Vee Unlimited Race Boat that left them all with dropped jaws in amazement, I felt I had to see for myself what they could have all possibly been talking about.
After an up close and personal inspection of the fine work of art, Outerlimits has really stepped it up once again, raising the bar for the other manufacturers of Super Vee to try and reach. The laminations of their hulls are second to none and probably in a tie with Skater. Skater is the only other manufacturer I have seen with such attention to detail in their laminations. OL has achieved great strength to weight ratios with manufacturing their own composite panels in-house, utilizing great coring techniques and vacuum bagging their expoxy hulls as well as taking it one step further with building an oven over 50 feet in length for the final step in their lamination schedule. Once the complete lamination is in place, the mold is then moved into the oven where the hull is then baked. Just by taking a look around this factory, one thing comes to mind, "This isn't a mass production shop!" Each boat is a hand crafted custom piece of art that not only will be a show piece, but can take the abuse of any offshore conditions. I have added photos to www.SharkeyMarine.com and they can be found on the page Boat Building. I will post a few here, but due to the time consumption photo reduction takes, I will leave the rest over on my site. Note: A lot of the contents of this thread have been copied and posted without the acknowledge of many of the original owners of the materials. It is not my intention to breach any infringement or copyright laws, however it has been an impossible task to track down the original owners of each photo to ask for their permission to be added to this thread. If anything published within this thread is owned by you, please private message me so that I may provide your images with the proper credits. Thank you for your understanding. |

With some controversy over a rumour in Key West about the 47's canopy not meeting requirements, that was just what it was, a rumour.
Have a look for yourself. I believe this not only meets the requirements but probably exceeds them as well! |

These next sequence of photos will show the molded in carrbon fiber roll bar. The photos follow from the floor of the starboard side and pan up over the top of the canopy back down on the port side.

Take note, this is an enclosed capsule. A hull within a hull so to speak. The cockpit is surrounded by walls of carbon fiber and sealing it off from the surrounding perimeter of the boat.

The lid itself appeared to about 1 inch thick as well.

By far, this is probably one of the safest canopies built today.

Here is what a hull and deck joint should look like from the inside.

Attention to the details.
Just have a look at this carbon fiber layup in the engine compartment of another Outerlimits. Notice the perfect corners on the 45 degree knee, If you know what it takes to build stuff like this, then you can really appreciate the time and effort that it takes to work with glass in such a way.... Checkout more of the photos of the pleasure boats being built, Shop Shots and the new stuff coming out soon by Outerlimits on my website www.SharkeyMarine.com under "Boat Building" |

It's obvious this boat is in the rigging stage, but if you wanted a cup in the corner of your engine compartment it can be done! Your imagination is your only limitation with Outerlimits. Of course the only thing that may limit your imagination is your checkbook... :evilb: |
Re: Inside Outerlimits
I have only one thing to say about that boat and OuterLimits in general.....

I purposely did not take photos of the area where they are developing their new products. Just out of respect for their privacy for the newest ideas they have coming out. On they way out I mentioned that to Mike and he informed me he didn't have a problem with that. So, on my next trip up there, you can expect some photos on the R&D section of their shop. There are a few shots on my site linked to the OL website that are available though. So check them out. |
Re: Inside Outerlimits
Thanks sharkey.... and mike for letting the boat be posted.....there is nothing to say but all business and it is total bs they were not allowed to run.....everybody else could bend the rules......times will change as soon as someone gets mad enough

Re: Inside Outerlimits

Re: Inside Outerlimits
i still say the hell with SV Unlimited...SV is the class. I wanna see all the manufactures build and rig a SV legal boat, same power and then lets see who has the fastest hull. Anyone can take a boat and put MONSTER motors in it and make it run like the wind. Lets go with 38 to 42 in length, 525's, choice of drives and bring it to the race course. Just my opinion, but no different the the kilo's. I think we should do the same there. Or for the title worlds fastest V hull. 38-42 in length and all use the same power whatever it may be. then you will have a true case of the worlds fastest hull...Oh yeah Sharkey but the way...awesome thread, great behind the scenes as usual...you da man !!! :evilb:

Sharkey - the subjects been beaten to death but did you happen to ask about Sea Rodder? Will it ever make it on air?? From what i understand they have a lot of footage shot. I think right now they are just waiting for the right deal among which network to show it on. Nothing I know was confirmed yet... I have a great clip over on my website under "HULL of FAME" |
