6 dead after seaplane crashes shortly after takeoff near Fisher Island

A seaplane operating out of Watson Island crashed near Fisher Island Monday afternoon killing six occupants, news partner channel 6 reported.

According to initial reports, the plane had just taken off from Watson Island and soon afterward crashed into the water.

It was not immediately known how many people were on board.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities were at the scene.

James Judd, of the Coast Guard, told NBC 6 by telephone that the plane was some type of sea plane that typically carries 10 to 15 people. He said the plane flies from Watson Island to the Bahamas.

The plane went down at about 2:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion before the plane went down.

As of 3 p.m., the Coast Guard was reporting the recovery of six bodies.

Sounds like rescue is not going well, Fox news reports 12 dead, 3 maybe small children.

tahts weird i was telling my buddy last night we should fly down to the bahamas for a few days r&r and that we shpuld fly chalks, they have been around for years. that sucks that they couldn't land without power in the water being a sea plane.

AOL news says the plane exploded in mid air and all 20 passengers are dead. Very Sad.

The explosion thing has been repeated by a lot of people and a wing came off also they say it was returning from the Bahamas.
