Exhaust for blower motors question.......

I'm getting ready to look for exhaust for a blower motor. I don't want to go with headers and was thinking about a set of used Gils or IMCO's or something along those lines.

I've heard I should have the elbow with the water dump that comes in on top of the elbow instead of at the base of the elbow right above the exhaust manifold due to a blowers ability to surge and suck the water back into the cylinders (I'm thinking that would be bad). I've only seen the style that dumps in at the base. What's the deal with this. Who's has experience with this? Mechanics???? Thanks.

Tank

Scooter 01-30-2002 07:08 PM

I have Gil and love them, not headers just top pipes and i do run the elbows, just watch out the Gils may sit alittle higher on the manifold causing your rubber exhaust pipes to the rear to burn out on the top from the rear haul exit to the header pipe

thisistank 01-30-2002 07:10 PM

Hey Scooter, so you are running the regular elbows that have the water returns just above the exhuast manifolds? How long have you been running that set up with out probs?

Neverfastenuf 01-30-2002 07:16 PM

Tank, Bruce could tell you all about reversion. A bad thing. Has to do with camshaft duration and such. I'll bet he jumps in here soon. ;)

Scooter 01-30-2002 07:21 PM

Been run them for alittle over two years, and no problem they dump right where the manifold meets the pipe. I wish i could stop the damn rubber from burning out though.

DJD 01-30-2002 07:27 PM

Reversion is due to cam overlap, not blower surge.
I run Stainless Marine manifolds on my blower motors and have used Gills before. Short pipes are the ones that generally give the problems because water enters the pipe very close to the "rise".
You shouldn't have a prob with either manifold as long as you pressure test before you buy used ones.
Be careful, most of them are being replaced for a reason.

Wardey 01-30-2002 07:36 PM

Blower Motor !!! CMI Big Tube Headers....

thisistank 01-30-2002 07:36 PM

So DJD if you go with the long pipes the water dumps back into the pipes away from the manifold? are the short pipes just more common? Ans basically as long as they are pressure tested ok theres not a prob. with either type?

Hey Scooter and DJD do you have a pic of your motors?

Scooter 01-30-2002 07:39 PM

yes no scanner right now, just redid the cumputer so lost all old photos once i get sum i will sure send them. just send me your E-mail.

thisistank 01-30-2002 07:41 PM

Dave, I can pick up a set of stellings for pretty cheap but I want to stay away from headers bro. From what I've seem they tend to leak water back into the cylinders. They are good for more speed and all, but just don't seem as reliable as the manifold style exhaust.

thisistank 01-30-2002 07:43 PM

scooter,

[email protected]

I'll look forward to seeing them.

Hey, tank i have the women scanning them at work, and saving them on a disk should have them to send tomorrow.

thisistank 01-30-2002 07:52 PM

Thanks brother....If you can throw in some of the whole boat I'd like to see it. It sounds killer! ;)

C_Spray 01-30-2002 07:53 PM

How about Eickert manifolds? Full-length runners, and dry all the way to the tip. Since they are cast aluminum, I don't know how much power they can take, though. I would call Eickert and talk to Brett or Keith.

Oh - they're LOUD, too. Very :D

Scooter 01-30-2002 08:00 PM

Tank you will be good to go t will send a few, what kind of baja do you have?

bdnw8450 01-30-2002 08:41 PM

check your e-mail for pics of stainless marine setup.

Jeff 01-30-2002 08:48 PM

Stainless Marine Dominator III 's are great and very durable. I ran 1300 hp through them and they made me long custom 5 inch tail pipes for around $2800. And they sounded nasty!

Tinkerer 01-30-2002 09:32 PM

I have had 3 sets of lightning headers two sets are now 4 years old no problems. The older headers had a lot of cracking problems.

US1 Fountain 01-30-2002 09:56 PM

Tank,
Even though the Gils have the water inlet at the base of the riser, the water exits the riser at the end. They are a tube within a tube, so water is not being dumped into the exhaust at the base. Sure most of the exhaust brands are this way. Naturally a riser for a silent choice system is going to be shorter than a straight thru hull, so water is introduced closer to the bend with the choice exhaust. Look at my "blower power" pic. Gil risers with silent choice. No reversion problems.

this---- I've wasted (2) 572 motors on "cheap" lightning headers. I know what you are saying. Thats why I say, CMI's.

Wardey 01-30-2002 10:43 PM

P.S. Don't even say used !!!! The 1K or so you might think you saved will prob cost you alot more later on.....

Wardey 01-30-2002 10:46 PM

Trout----- sssshhhhhhhh, only 89dcb's....sir.

Tinkerer 01-30-2002 10:54 PM

Funny ( cheap ) I have heard a lot more cracking going on on CMI's (why do they call them the cracking headers?)CMI's have had a lot of problems over the years.

Dean Ferry 01-31-2002 09:58 AM

I'll say that my (FUGLY) KE Headers have been running in SALT water for 4+ years now and have not had a single problem, other than they are LOAD! :D I installed Shotgun III's last year and that seems to help, takes the edge off, BUT as far as how they stack up against Stainless Steel WELDED headers, GILS, IMCO, etc., KE's make the MOST horsepower, have a 2 year WARRENTY, and are available in MANY NON-FUGLY colors. Ask Innovation what header they recommend. IMHO, I think they are the best designed headers out there! There is NO water passage/gasket between the manifold and the collector to go bad and leak!
My H2O mixes with my exhaust just before the tip as it exits the transom. In Fact, I have a custom set of dry pipes, with dual H20 dumps if anyone is looking to running a set of KE's DRY!
I was @ KE's shop awhile back, and he had hundreds of sets there, all different colors, mine are the stock black finish.

Tank, if you boat in salt water, I would look seriously @ the KE Header. If you are interested, I can get you a good $$ on them, thru my buddy @ Marine Performance.

thisistank 01-31-2002 01:35 PM

OK OK , you guys have given me all kinds of ideas and now basicaly I don't know what the hell to get!! :D

Scooter, I have a 97 24 (26! :D ;) ) outlaw sst purple and white graphics. I'm waiting for those pics bro.

c-spray,

I may just look into the KE headers. They sound good.....But expensive!! :( I didn't want to spend that much on exhuast for now. 10g's for the motor rebuild is a little rough on the wallet.

Dave,

I hear ya about the headers and that's why I wasn't really interested. But now I may have changed my mind. Who knows I'll just have to wait and see what all I find out.

IS-7,

think you can send me a pic thats a jpeg and not a zip. I can't open zips.

Jeff,

Annother choice. However I origianlly wanted to buy a good set of used, not new. But now it seems I will be looking into new also.

Jerry,

Nice pics. that's really the style I want to go with. But no silent choice, just straight pipes. I could care less about noise restraints!! :D If I'm not running in the ocean then I'm running at havasu. Neither have any noise restraints.

Dean,

Like I said before, now you guys have me thinking. The KE's sound good. What's up with the dry stacks I heard they run way to hot and can burn around the transom. They do sound bad ass though! I'll will look into the KE's how much do you think I can get a set for? I have a buddy that has a pair of Stellings for 2k brand new in the box. They are a few years old though, but never used. I'm just still not sure about headers.

Thanks you guys for all the help.

Tank

Dean Ferry 01-31-2002 02:40 PM

Tank,
The dry stacks are still water jacketed that have a small water exit/drain hole, on the outside water jacket. It is located at the end of the tail pipe, and drains out side of the transom.
Call John Cosker @ Marine Performance in Port Orange Fl. (386)-760-6464 and tell him that "Mean Dean" sent you. He can quote you direct. Yes, the KE's are more expensive, but I feel that the extra $$ is worth the performance gain, and the foundry cast toughness that holds up well in the Ocean! :D
I know that they are not the "Eye Candy" that polished CMI/Stellings are, but then again, I'm more of functional guy anyway, being an "Enginerd", as my oldest girl calls me!
MD

thisistank 01-31-2002 04:57 PM

Right on Dean, thanks. How much do you want for those dry stacks by the way?? I do like them alot ;) :D

Tank

P.s.

do those dry stacks you have only fit KE's??

Hey Scooter, I got the first set of pics. Your boat is sweeeeet! I didn't get any of the motors though. did you get my return email?

Scooter 01-31-2002 06:37 PM

How my kb was in the file? I forwarded them to you should have been 4pics if you srcoll down, if not i will have to wait till i get the disk tomorrow. no have not recieved your reply [email protected] make sure the under score is inbetween the names.

thisistank 01-31-2002 06:40 PM

I just hit the reply button. You shouldve gotten it. All I said was that I didn't recieve the motor pics. and that you have a nice set up bro. I'll look forward to seeing the motors.

Scooter 01-31-2002 06:45 PM

talk to you tomorrow tank
later scooter

thisistank 01-31-2002 06:53 PM

later Scooter. I'll look for the email tomorrow.

Is-7,

The last try was the charm! I got the pic. Looks nice! But I dont need the quick and quiet set up. just the straight pipes. Let me know what you find out on price.

bdnw8450 02-01-2002 07:52 AM

that worked. click on above link for pics of stainless setup.

Dean Ferry 02-01-2002 08:22 AM

Tank,
My dry pipes are for KE's only, and they are 4.5" OD, so if you have 4" transom tips now, you would have to widen your thru-transom holes .5" minimum. That's part of the reason I haven't installed them myself, PLUS the fact that I'm afraid that my boat's exhaust dB would CRACK windows up and down the canal!!
How much $$ do I want, I'm not sure, they were like $600 to make, so.. if you end up with the KE's, and decide you want them, send me an e-mail I'm sure we can work something out! :D
Talk to you later,
Dean
