I heard a good first step in protecting your idea is to write it down, thenm mail it to yourself. The US postage stamp will put a date on your idea if future need arrises. Of course, do NOT open the mailed piece until needed...

Thats a good idea, if someone would try to steal the idea on the patent form there is a paragraph saying under penalty of federal law that everything you state is true!
